School can be stressful. It can cause anxiety or extreme stress. It can even end in mental breakdowns. I think that mental health should be a more recognized thing in schools. I feel as though it is often overlooked and should be addressed. We should be focusing on making sure that students are mentally well and able to do work than if they got their homework done. Homework. Sometimes we get piles and piles of homework whether it’s projects that we’ve been working on for weeks or daily math or science homework. It can get to a point where students just shut down and are unable to do any kind of work. If we had more study halls or time to work on it in class maybe we wouldn’t stress about getting it done on time. I think homework-induced anxiety is a pretty common thing among students my age and I wish that we could do something about it. In a recent survey 97% of students wanted school to start later. Students should be able to go to school later because of many health problems. Teens have bad sleep habits and other after school activities that inhibit them from doing well in schools that start early in the morning. Right now school causes lack of sleep and is one cause in child obesity. Starting school at least an hour later can greatly improve the health of students and how well they can do academically. With schools average start time being at 8 it makes some kids have to get up at 6:30 maybe even earlier. Everyone has always hated getting up super early in the morning to go to school. As children get older they move to different schools, from elementary to middle to high school, and the start times get earlier and earlier. In elementary school it was never a problem getting up but as we get older, it becomes more difficult to get up. Schools start so early in the morning that it is hard to focus and students tend to either miss more of their earlier classes or earn lower grades compared to their later classes. To begin, Ben Franklin once said, “Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.” So as long as we sleep earlier, then there will be no need to start schools later, right? Wrong. According to Newsweek, kids our age are biologically programmed to fall asleep at 11. Waking up for school around 6 in the morning, this leaves us with a mere 7 hours of sleep, as opposed to the 9 hours we need. It’s no wonder that even those students who drink gallons of coffee every morning are still exhausted during class.

First of all, I believe that schools should start later in the morning because of the students grades. According to Lauren Gold the students with the best sleep score – those who spent the longest time asleep and most time in deep sleep – were also the ones with the highest grades in the class. Do you ever feel really tired before school? I know I do. But if you think we get up early. Some kids have to wake up at 4:00 in the morning! This is why I think we should start school later. Kids do better awake, kids become pathologically sleepy, and kids feel stressed in the morning.

Day in and day out, students are withheld from sleeping a healthy amount. This is due to various things associated with school. Students are bombarded by work from the minute they arrive to school to the minute they go to sleep. School starting so early in the morning does not help them at all. School should start later in the morning. This idea is abundant on benefits like, students will get to school on time and will no longer sleep in class, students will be able to complete all homework, and students will be able to start their day off on the right foot. A big reason as to why schools should start later is because teenagers on a daily basis don’t have good mental health. Teens have to deal with getting bullied, having friend problems, relationship issues, and sometimes they even have problems at home.
