How 9/11 Changed America's Homeland Security

“At the end of the day, the goals are simple: safety and security.” This quote by Jodi Rell states the mission of the United States government after the tragic event on September 11, 2001. The nation’s security before nine-eleven was not stern enough to stop a deadly attack from another country. The impact that nine-eleven had on the federal government brought many changes, including the national security. National security is the concept that a government should protect the state and its citizens against national crises. The United States’ national security has become stronger since nine-eleven in areas such as airports, public schools and sporting events.

Homeland Security has not affected me negatively. However, I do feel positive about some changes that were made after the 9/11 attack, the Homeland Security Act was pushed through Congress to organize a government that is responsible for dealing with terrorist threats on the U.S. The aftermath of 9/11 brought awareness to our country. Personnel are more aware of when a threat exists and taking the needed steps to do something about the threat before it happens. Better changes made within the country after the 9/11 attack some examples are: 1. Travel (Aviation and Transportation Security Act). The new TSA implemented procedures that included stricter guidelines on passenger and luggage screening. 2. Government (Patriot Act and Transportation

The 9/11 attacks has changed how law enforcement response to terrorist attacks. Prior to 9/11 law enforcement were a bunch of entities that acted independently of each other. One of the major things that were affected during 9/11 was the communication and this hit to our communication infrastructure crippling how law enforcement, EMS and FDNY passed information. This attack changed how law enforcement responded to any terrorist attacks. After the terrorist attack law enforcement created a domestic counterterrorism unit to handle moments of disaster and terrorist attacks. These units worked in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies; the sharing of information is all funneled into one system called the Nationwide Suspicious Activity

The September 11 attacks are the worst terrorist attacks ever committed on U.S. soil. On September 11 there were four passenger planes that were hijacked by terrorist. The first plane to be hijacked that morning was American airlines flight 11. This passenger plane was crashed into the north tower of the world trade center. About fifteen minutes later a second plane appeared in the skies it was united airlines flight 175 and it crashed into the south tower of the world trade center. Forty five minutes later the third hijacked flight American airlines flight 77 was crashed into the pentagon. The fourth and last hijacked plane was united airlines flight 98 this plane was crashed in a field in Pennsylvania after the passengers tried to stop the terrorist.

This attack in September 2001 involved the multiple Al Qaeda groups hijacking four aircraft and then using them as weapons by causing collisions with prominent and heavily populated buildings in New York City, New York, and Arlington, Virginia. These building were Tower 1 and Tower 2 of the World Trade Center complex, and then the Pentagon, headquarters for the Department of Defense, the fourth plane crashed without affecting the public population in a field in Pennsylvania. In total nearly 3000 people lost their lives that day.

With many nations on high alert, The United States must act on tighter immigration laws. Implementing Homeland Security after 9/11 was a start, but it has not been enough. With the most recent terrorist attacks in San Bernardino, and The Boston Marathon proves are system is broken. The continuous attacks of terror in Paris, Pakistan, and Brussels within the last several months our government must act now before it's to late before another 9/11 happens.

The first attack that took place in New York City involving the Twin Towers was Flight 11 leaving from Boston, Massachusetts and going to Los Angeles, California with 92 people on board. At 8:46 a.m., Flight 11 crashed into the North World Trade Center or the WTC. Flight 175 was also leaving from Boston, Massachusetts and going to Los Angeles, California with 65 people on board. Since 9/11, transit security has increased exponentially, especially airport security. Full body scanners, stricter item restrictions, and more thorough security procedures are just a start. Many technological advances were applied to security in all aspects of mass transit, in order to improve efficiency and effectiveness. This was dwarfed in comparison to the number of new law enforcement officers hired to "guard against terrorism". (Forest & Howard, 2004). The Department of Homeland Security has also launched a variety of public awareness campaigns to increase public engagement with transit security problems or issues. On this day many hijackers took control of four commercial passenger jets flying out of airports throughout the east coast of the United States.” For those who don’t know 4 planes had been flown, two to the Twin Towers, one hitting the Pentagon and the last one which was taken over by passengers crashing in Pennsylvania. These places that had been hit were a representation of America’s power and pride. Not only had these buildings been destroyed but America was too. On the day 9/11 nearly 3,000 lives had been lost including the hijackers. It was the worst loss of life due to a terrorist incident in the US.

There are days the world will never forget: the day the atomic bomb hit Hiroshima, the day Kennedy was assassinated, the list continues. This was one of those days. It was a brisk Tuesday morning in September. In the blink of an eye, everything stopped. Shock crossed the nation. Nobody moved. Everyone stared at their televisions in disbelief. The twin towers of the World Trade Center collapsed, an airplane hit the Pentagon, and the brave souls onboard flight 93 lost their lives in a field in Pennsylvania. America would never be the same.

On September 11th 2001, New York was attacked by terrorists. When asked about the day of the attack, my father told his story. My father’s day started out by him getting on the bus at 4:35 to go to Grand Central Terminal, his job at the time. He arrived at work around six a.m.. He punched in and started his typical day. Three hours went by and this is when things took a turn for the bad side.

I pressed a button, set the phone down and glanced out the window. I never get sick of the stunning view I get from high in the south tower in the World Trade Center. I caught sight of my calendar. That impact left a broad, smoldering hole near the 80th floor of the 110-story skyscraper, abruptly killing hundreds of people and trapping hundreds more in the higher floors .
