Teenagers now were encouraged to attend University, this new pressure to become a successful adult was the driving force for the new teenage subculture that emerged from 1950-1979. 1960s Following the era of the 1950s, when teenagers felt the pressure of obtaining an education and becoming successful adults, the 1960’s brought about great social change. These changes were brought about with a greater influx of immigrants who brought new ideas, customs and foods. During the 1960’s, many significant things occurred that affected the history of Australia. Though, this is not what the time period was recognized for. The Hippies were born into the fluctuating world of the early 1950’s and late 1940’s. They were raised in the heart of a revolution, a time when sexual liberty, drug usage and psychedelic music took centre stage. Countless numbers of the hippies were protesting after the post war period, because their parents were very traditional and conventional. This fuelled the youth’s revolt against the typical, selfish and violent society.

Throughout the 1960s there was a cultural phenomenon that started in the United States and spread like wildfire to multiple other cultures in the world. This phenomenon was also known as countercultures. This decade raised the 76.4 million Americans born during the baby boom generation. The babies of this boom entered their teen years during the 1960s and they definitely embraced a multitude new standards, dramatically different from the way their parents were raised. While some encompassed new ideals in dress, music and movies others joined countercultures and rebelled against the social norms with poetry, novels and art. The 1950s sound was still popular and the waist-tight skirts and clean, sharp look was still worn by many. The style of fashion was new and unfamiliar to the people who grew up in the 1940s and 50s. One of the most surprising trends was the box dresses that women wore. They were very short and showed much more skin than the parents of the teenagers in that era, would have liked. They were used to much more conservative types of clothing. Fashion evolved, along with the new generation who inspired that fashion.
