Everybody faces obstacles in life, whether they be small or big. How people react to the obstacles placed in their lives is what builds people’s character. This is where perseverance plays a key role with the help of endurance and ambition. Perseverance is the ability to overcome obstacles even when you feel failure is inevitable. It is running an extra mile when exhausted or staying up late in order to finish a paper. Perseverance is the ability to overcome emotional, physical, and even financial failure. It is never giving up even though “the going gets tough.”

The place where Pausch was giving his lecture was in a lecture hall at Carnegie Mellon. He was giving the speech to many people that he knew but also many others that he did not know. He was in front of a crowd of many people and in a perfect context for his last lecture. You also feel as if he is actually just speaking to you throughout the whole lecture.

Throughout the novel, Junior endures numerous obstacles and hardships; despite all of his adversities, he was determined to make a better life for himself and decided to go to a predominately white school away from his Indian reservation, where he had lived all of his life. Unfortunately, Junior did experience several problems relating to his cultural identity, some he faced while he was at his new school, others were on his Indian reservation, even though these obstacles temporally held him back he was able to overcome them.

Randy Pausch did a great job getting the interest of the audience from the very beginning through the end of the speech, either by telling jokes or relating to other people when they were kids. Pausch knew his speech by heart and that was amazing as he never looked at his notes and he had it fully memorized. Pausch had almost no Ahs, Ums, Like, You Know, O¬¬¬¬¬k, or other non-descriptive words and his speech flowed very well. Pausch’s body movement was phenomenal. He used typical hand gestures to keep his audience engaged as he spoke and he also proved his point when he said he was in good physical shape by doing push-ups on stage. The dictionary says that perseverance is steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success. Synonyms for the word perseverance is dedication and persistence. Antonyms would be weakness and giving up. Perseverance is what gets people through the hardships in life without the situation dragging them down. Perseverance is everywhere, it can be little conditions such as a person might not appreciate the job they have been given but knows it needs to be done so they persevere and make the best of the job. It can also be seen in big situations such medical issues with cancer for example, a person is so sick from all the radiation and chemo being put in their body but they want to live. So, they have to persevere through the pain and constant sickness to fight for their life. Three real people that have shown perseverance in their day to day life. They are Malala Yousafzai, Temple Grandin, and Laura Schroff. Malala Yousafzai is a girl who has to persevere as she stands up to the Taliban and fights for the rights for girls to attend school. Temple Grandin has autism, yet she has changed the face of agriculture, since she has a disability no one wanted to listen to her ideas. She has to persevere everyday as she has to convince people that her ideas are good, even though she gets knocked down most times. Laura Schroff met a boy named Maurice; Laura and Maurice both have to persevere everyday, Maurice more than Laura, but they both have to help one another to keep on going. Nonfiction literature shows people how important it is to have perseverance when they are faced with struggles, it helps people to better understand how to get through the issues they are faced with everyday.
