Many people don’t understand the proper use of irony is and that there is three types of irony. There is dramatic irony, which is when the characters in the story does not know something but the audience does, There is also verbal irony, which is when someone means the opposite of what they say. Finally there is situational irony, when the opposite of what you think is going to happen happens. In this essay I will be talking about the different types of irony that is used in the play A Midsummer Night’s Dream. There are many examples of dramatic irony in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. An example is when everyone switches who they love because of the flower. The Characters do not know about the flower, but the audience does. Another case of dramatic irony is when Lysander says he loves …show more content…
Those were just some examples of dramatic irony in the play. There a lot of verbal irony in A Midsummer Night’s Dream too. This includes when Hellena says, “ . . . Someone should write a book about it”(Shakespeare 3.2.240-245). This is verbal irony because she does not actually mean to write a book. She is being sarcastic. Additionally, when she says, “That’s a good one.”(Shakespeare 3.2.250) In this example, she is being sarcastic again, she does not mean that it is good. Those two examples were only a few examples of verbal irony in the play. Finally there is situational irony. In the play you expected Titania to fall in love with someone good looking, but instead she fell in love with bottom as a donkey. Because you did not expect this to happen, this is an example of situational irony. The other example is when everything worked out in the end because of Puck and Thesis used spells to make people fall in love. You did not expect after how everything was messed up that it would work out in the end. That is why is is another example of situational irony. That was only a few of examples in the
A third instance of dramatic irony is the situation with the needle in the doll. With this, it was Abigail´s goal to get Elizabeth Proctor accused of witchcraft. Mary Warren made this doll when Abigail was sitting next to her. She left the needle inside. Mary gave the doll to Elizabeth as a gift. Abigail knew the needle was in the doll, so she stabbed herself in the stomach with a needle. With this she made the people believe Elizabeth used Voodoo on her and therefore used witchcraft. The audience knows this is not true and that Abigail is a false and lying girl. We know she does this is because she wants to get rid of Elizabeth. She is in the way of Abigail and that has still to do with the affair only the Proctors and the audience know about.
In the play Romeo and Juliet, Act 3 Scene 5, Juliet is fighting with her father, Lord Capulet. This is because she is going against his will for her to marry Paris. Lord Capulet’s emotions are of anger and disbelief as Juliet does not want to marry Paris. Unknown to Lord Capulet, Juliet is already married to Romeo. This is a specific example of dramatic irony as us the audience know something which another character does not know.
The word irony defines situations that occur where the outcome is different from what one expects. Nothing is certain in life it is full of mysteries. Everyday scenarios can be an example of irony. In some cases, the situation can leave the person baffled and in a state of disbelief. In the short story “The Story of an Hour” written by Kate Chopin, life throws a hardball at the characters in three different forms of irony, verbal, dramatic, and situational.
Dramatic irony was used by Shakespeare to give the audience the feeling of fear and sometimes even distress. Dramatic irony is something that the audience knows that the characters don’t. The first example of dramatic irony is after Tybalt is slain, the Capulets, the Montagues and the Prince argue
An example of the use of dramatic irony is when Cady dumbs herself down for her crush, Aaron. This shows how she changes who she really is just to fit in. In the movie, Cady, who is by far the smartest girl in her math class, fails her test purposely so her crush Aaron Samuels will tutor her. By doing so, she hopes that he will end up liking her. The teacher eventually catches on and explains to Cady that it isn’t a good idea. This is dramatic irony because the audience knows that Cady is faking being dumb but the characters do not know it except for her math teacher. Another example of dramatic irony is when Cady is sabotaging Regina. Regina wanted to lose three pounds for the dance, so Cady told her that she had these weight loss bars from Africa, but in reality they were bars from Africa that made kids gain weight. This shows that Cady is turning into someone who she is not, just to hurt someone else. These two pieces of evidence show that a lot of the time, people fake who they really
"Bottom, you've been transformed," (Shakespeare 38). During this part of the scene, Nick Bottom's head was turned into that of a donkey. It was an example of irony. Irony is when the exact opposite of what you expect to happen actually occurs. There are three different types of irony: situational, verbal, and dramatic. In the play, A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare, there are many instances of irony.
An example of irony would be when Macbeth is foretold of his succession to higher standing and power, but by the end of the novel, Macbeth is left with nothing. 10. Metaphor – a figure of speech that relates to something as being the same or similar as another without using “like” or “as.” Ex. “Cleaning was a breeze for
William shakespeare uses dramatic irony in the play Romeo and Juliet to enhance and develop the plot of scene 3. The dramatic irony that shakespeare uses is when Juliet is crying over the banishment of Romeo when people around her thinks it’s over Tybalt’s death. Shakespeare uses this in enhancing the fact that no one around her likes Romeo. “Evermore weeping for your cousin's death? What, wilt thou wash him from his grave with tears?” -Lady Capulet, her mother, not knowing that in fact Juliet has married the person that killed her brother-in-law’s son and is more sad about her husband leaving her than a family member passing ”Shall I speak ill of him that is my husband?” -Juliet. With that said, leading into the next use of dramatic irony.
types of irony in his play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. There are three different types of irony,
One example of irony is when Tom states, “Nowadays people begin by sneering at family life and family institutions, and next they’ll throw everything overboard and have intermarriage between black and white.” His statement is ironic because he is accusing people of not following traditional American values while he himself is having an affair with Myrtle. Another example of irony is when Myrtle was run over by Gatsby’s car and Tom believes it was Gatsby who was driving, but it was actually Daisy who,
Dramatic irony is when the reader understands the meaning of the situation and is able to foresee or predict the outcome but the character does not. Tragic irony is a form of dramatic, which eventually leads to some sort of tragedy. Verbal irony is found in stanza 1, when the husband refers to his wife as little wife, which implies that she is small, insignificant
Another example of dramatic irony is when Orsino give Cesario advice about love because it shows Cesario/Viola’s feelings towards Orsino. In my opinion these different comedic devices affected the plot in many different dramatic ways. The play wouldn’t be the same without the humor. The entire plot uses puns, word play, inversion, crossdressing, irony and many more comedic devices in order to make the play confusing but humorous. Without these different aspects, the play would be dull and wouldn’t make any sense.
Dramatic irony is thoroughly used and illustrated throughout and is what drives the play. To break it down, dramatic irony is a literary technique used, which involves the audience or spectators to have a clear understanding of a situation of a plot, in which the characters can not grasp or have no knowledge of. Basically, dramatic irony is only present in the recognition of the viewers, where we are aware of what the other characters are not.
Dramatic irony occurs when a reader or viewer knows more about the character’s current situation than the character does. In A Midsummer Night’s Dream dramatic irony especially relates to how the audience perceives the four lovers circumstances. Both Demetrius and Lysander suddenly stop loving Hermia and fall in love with Helena. There are many malapropisms in the play, for example Nick Bottom frequently uses malapropisms, such as: Bottom says he will ‘aggravate’ his
Different kinds of irony are used in different plays: verbal irony, situational irony, dramatic irony and many others. Irony helps to create an easy and cheerful atmosphere in comedies in particular. The way Shakespeare uses it in this play is especially effective. The reason for that is his usage of “overlapping irony” – he mix situational irony with dramatic irony. Therefore, after analyzing the irony in Twelfth night, a conclusion can be reached – irony works more powerfully when they are mixed with each
