How To Become A Physician Assistant

While writing about oneself might be one of the hardest things for some of us to do, I'm sure that figuring out the personality of the person behind the words might be equally as hard. So I'll try to make this as simple yet as comprehensive as possible. I was born in Austria to Somali parents and grew up in Saudi Arabia, went to med school in Sudan and am finally here to practice medicine in Canada. So as you might see, the common question 'Where are you from?' takes a little longer for me to answer as do other Somali refugees around the world and am glad to finally find a place I can truly call home.

A medical assistant is the perfect first step to entering the medical field. It is a growing profession and more than 16,000 jobs are estimated to become accessible to future medical assistants in the United States by 2022 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The amount of jobs that are currently held by medical assistants is 591,300. Which are broken up into 59% at physician’s offices, 15% in hospitals, 10% in offices of other healthcare professionals and 7% in outpatient care centers. The average pay per hour is $14 which can be increased based upon experience and location.

Choosing a career path starts in high school. The choices you make, the classes you take, and the activities you're involved in all matter in the path that you're pursuing. The competitiveness of your career path will vary, the more competitive the career path is the more that you need to offer to the colleges you apply to. My research consisted of finding the facts about the work involved, the lifestyle, and the pay of a general physician and a physician assistant. I have concluded from my research that I want to pursue a career as a physician's assistant.

Over the course of high school, I have engaged in my community in various ways. For one, I have donated my time volunteering for health-related organizations that promote good causes, such as the “Heart Walk” for the American Heart Association and the Alzheimer's Walk. Over the summer of 2017, I assisted nurses in maternal fetal medicine with clerical work through the VolunTeen program

Contributing to my school and community is a true passion. I am involved in programs like the Red Cross, Angel Tree created by The Salvation Army, and Olive Garden’s Pasta For Pennies. My school hosted a Red Cross blood drive, and I was responsible for promoting the event to individuals within our school. We had a total of two hundred students donate blood. We helped save a total of six hundred lives! I also assisted the Program Angel Tree by promoting the program among the student organizations within my school. Our involvement has helped hundreds of less fortunate children and seniors receive necessities and gifts! As a team, the student council also collects spare change from students in our school. Our collaboration with Olive Garden has helped fund the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's School & Youth campaign. I am truly glad that my contributions have made an impact within my community and society! My strong involvement in extracurricular activities has helped me become knowledgeable, principled, and a risk-taker. I carry a strong sense of respect and righteousness, and I approach unfamiliar opportunities with a vision and great courage. A background check is required and any little thing can stop you from getting certified.

We contact healthcare providers for diagnosis, treatments, screening, consultations, and preventions of any harm to our health; this is also why they are important to us. Day by day, the demand of a medical profession is increasing. In every era or any situation, we need someone to help us for our health. As stated in bls.gov, employment of physician assistants is projected to grow 30 percent from 2014 to 2024; it is much faster than the average for all occupations. As demand for healthcare services grows, physician assistants will be needed to provide care to patient.

Attending a physician 's assistant (PA) program has been my desire since beginning work in the mental health field. I am a licensed professional counselor intern (LPC-Intern) working towards full licensure as a licensed professional counselor (LPC). I conduct individual and group psychotherapy sessions in a private practice and a mental health hospital. I enjoy doing therapy with clients, however, I want to include another perspective into my treatment, the medical perspective.

I changed my major a few times until I finally decided to become a physician assistant also known as a PA. It started when I realized i have a passion for medicine. About 6 months ago I broke my hand and during the rehabilitation period I was inspired by my orthopedic physician. I had originally wanted to become an Orthopedic surgeon but as time when on i started being a little bit more realistic. School has never been my strong suit. An orthopedic surgeon has to go through 4 years of college, 4 years of med school and another 5 years of clinicals. Thats a lot of time in school for someone who doesn’t like being there in the first place. Most people think becoming a PA takes just as long but surprisingly it only takes about 2 years.

The intent of this composition is to inform the reader of the duties and responsibilities of a Physician's Assistant. This essay will also highlight the history of physician assistant and what was the main purpose for this career. On the other hand it will outline the education requirements to become a certified PA. Finally this essay will overview the work environment, duties, responsibilities, and how being a PA will affect the lives of their patients.

At the age of eighteen, I will be abruptly faced with the beginning hardships of life. Along with many other responsibilities, choosing what to do after high school is a vital decision that will affect the rest of my life. Taking my desire to help others and my love of learning into consideration, I have chosen two careers to research that suit my interests and skills. A career as an elementary school teacher or physician assistant would both require me to further my education beyond high school; however, these careers have a completely different work environment and job outlook.

With technology always changing and improving, these professionals constantly have to take classes, learning how to work with these databases. For example, a CNA, Melissa Rodrigues, was required to take three weekend classes to learn how to use a new EHR database effectively. Also, to keep their certification, physician assistants must complete 100 hours of continuing education every 2 years. Another requirement that just began in 2014 is that a recertification exam is required every ten years to keep a PA license. Many jobs require relocation, but as a PA, it isn’t common. Usually a person can find a job in this field almost anywhere there are hospitals, doctor’s offices, or people in need of medical attention.
