The legalization of marijuana has been a very controversial topic that has everyone asking each other, is it really worth it? For many, the thought of legalizing a drug, which the government has classified as a Schedule 1 drug is, mind boggling to them. I am going to prove that the pros about the legalization of medical and recreational use of marijuana are greatly outweighing the cons. I will show with statistical evidence that legalization is beneficial in many ways such as generating higher state revenues, decreased crime rates, decreased imprisonment rates for petty drug crimes, breakthroughs in the medical field and that in general, banning marijuana is preventing our economy from its potential growth.

One of the most divisive issues in America today is whether to legalize the cultivation, sale, and possession of cannabis. The prohibition of marijuana cost tax payers an annual of 12 billion dollars a year to prosecute recreational users as criminals which was a component in our deficit today. The current prohibition of marijuana makes criminals of otherwise law abiding cannabis users. Legalization will provide medical benefits of marijuana, and economic benefits of legal marijuana, and the re correct the societal harm that results from the current prohibition of marijuana on the federal level and the majority of states. Those in favor of the current prohibition claim “there are no good reasons to legalize marijuana”, but they do not know all of the plants benefits.

The legalization of Marijuana is a highly debated topic in the United States. Due to the recent interest it has become an issue which can only be handled at the law maker’s lately with more bills getting pushed by legislature to legalize it. Recently the District of Columbia, Oregon, and Alaska voted to legalize Marijuana bringing the total number of states in which in Marijuana is legal to five. For many generations, the legalization of marijuana has been a great debate but recently this debate has gained much attention. For many years the United States and other nations have spent millions on the ‘war on drugs’, although this war is not successful. The legalization of marijuana would not only be a brake-threw movement but would help many issues the United States is facing today. Cannabis has legitimate medical effects. The sales in many states have shown a great increase in revenue, not to mention prohibition has enormous social cost. Many may argue that the legalization would lead to higher use in other drugs, although studies show marijuana is not a gateway drug.
