In this era of globalisation, project management has been widely utilized to enhance the competitive edge of an organisation. Project management serves as a platform for many companies to achieve organizational excellence and success.
Project management is defined to be an application of skills, knowledge and techniques to well-planned project activities to fulfil various project requirements. Project Management Institute (PMI) emphasizes the need to integrate several project management processes such as initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling as well as closing to ensure project success, which in turn, delivers business results in today’s competitive and hectic global economic environment.

PMO is defined to be an entity that acts as a centralized management body to provide project management support functions, manage shared resources, identify and develop project management methodology, offer coaching and mentoring as well as managing project management standards and policies. The Boston Consulting Group BCG (2013) defines four clearly linked PMO imperatives (focus on critical initiatives, institute smart and simple processes, foster talent and capabilities, encourage a culture of change). PMO ensures that the organisation invests in projects and programs that will ultimately drive its strategic vision and goals. (Anon., 2014). Greg Wood, a PMI Global Executive Council member, asserts that strong PMO delivers two distinct areas improvement to the organisation. It assists organisations in choosing the right projects to deliver and delivering projects correctly (Anon., 2014).

A PMO is a unified organization dedicated to improving the application and outcome of project management. They involve huge infrastructure, with rigid rationalized planning, control and procedure. A PMO is an organizational existence created to ease project managers in achieving project design. It is a group of people with a focus to support project managers in the successful implementation, and realization of projects. This provides an opportunity for project managers to broaden professionally if they were working solitarily from one another.
A project Management Office (team of project managers) should ensure that the requirements are managed and project plans are executed according to schedule. The PMO should also be responsible for resource planning and also ensure all relevant information is being transmitted across teams, external organizations such as schools, commercial lenders and other federal agencies which hold data.
The future of project management will require a shift from a low indecision, low vagueness approach to a high attentiveness, high decisiveness approach where change is the standard and decisions have to be made quickly and decisively. Projects are becoming global with scattered multi-cultural teams being the standard. Earning a PMI certification demonstrates an understanding of complex project management concepts, an ability to lead and manage multi-functional teams and enters you in a global community of professionals and experts.
