Improvement In My Writing

When I stop to think about the memory’s that I have made during my first semester of college; there are both good and bad pieces or times that present themselves. Often with many things there are gray areas, and writing would fall in there for me. I fortunately understand now that I have times where I can over look many of my writing flaws. Such as sentence structure! This by far was my biggest problem in this class, and I fully understand why. Personally I have times that will type up a paragraph and never notice the mistake. That is until someone points it out to me. It’s almost like my brain knows that something is wrong with it, but for some unknown reason it won’t register when I’m revising my paper. So as a writer I have realized that I need to take advantage of people around me and get their feedback on my essay’s; because

The final weeks of my first semester in college are coming to an end. My Columbus State english class has written a total of three projects, and a total of four papers. There are a lot of grammatical issues that, at the beginning of the year, I had issues on. However, I have improved on these errors drastically, and have become a better writer because of it. Even though I am still working on many aspects of my writing, I do believe that I have become a better writer. I believe that my biggest issues while writing are run on sentences, making a strong thesis statement, and having quotes stand alone at the beginning of a paragraph.

When I sit back and I reflect on all the papers I have wrote, one stands out most to me. During my senior year of high school, we had to write an 8 paged defense on something we strongly believed in. In this rhetorical analysis, I will be analyzing my senior defense topic, outline, rough draft, revising process and final draft verse the papers that I am writing now. Before I dive into comparing the ways I did my papers then and now, I want to share some background information with you about myself, and how my writing process evolved as my identity evolved.

One of the tips that has really helped me the when writing and improving my writing is, write your thoughts before organizing them. My mind flows when I am writing a paper or thinking about the topic and I sometimes forget to write everything down, so before I write a paper I sit down and really think about my topic, then I just write words and phrases that come to mind so that when I start my paper I have a general idea about what I want to write.

It has always been difficult for me to find a writing process that works well for me. Over the past years, I have struggled with writing papers and thinking creatively. However, I feel as if I have established a writing process that works for me.

I learned about the different styles of essays and how I can effectively improve my writing techniques and integrate them into my professional writing experiences. I know what to look for and how to improve my writing text. Knowing how to apply these techniques in my writing will better able me to write informative and persuasive documents and describe the detailed facts into my professional career writings. By knowing what a thesis statement is, it will allow and guide me to keep my argument focused when writing for my work place.

I feel the most confident when I revise my writing as I go along with the process; in some ways I feel it helps me organize and put all of my thoughts together. I do agree that the multiple writing drafts are very beneficial however, I think I would do better if I could revise my writing as I work on it and only have one continuous draft.

I feel that the biggest change to my writing this semester is in the way I organize myself for assignments. I was homeschooled and did all my assignments online. Making the change to a classroom environment was difficult for me due to my Asperger’s and learning about how to organize all aspects of my writing has been a challenge. I feel that I have improved as the semester progressed. I would like to discuss each aspect of the writing process and how my skills have improved by taking this class. I will be able to use the organizational process in my future career as a film maker and director.

How do you become a better writer in college? Simple you will want to take Digennaro analytical writing class. In his class, you will learn many beneficial things to writing a successful paper and do successful things. The three beneficial things that stood out was simplify your writing, construct a paper, and peer editing.

Writing is a skill that takes time to develop. Knowing your strengths and weaknesses is very important. Being aware of your strengths can help you stand out, and your weaknesses show you areas where improvement is needed. Like everybody I have weaknesses as well as strengths, and being conscious of them helped me improve my writing skills.

As I reflect on my growth as a writer in knowledge and artistry this semester, I cannot help but notice how writing has become a way to show my beliefs and express my personal life in a way that is casual and inviting to people with different beliefs and perspectives. Essentially, all writing reflects universal human experience, and I have grown to showcase that experience in my writing, not for the sake of relatability, but to give an underlying reason as to why I am writing and reflecting on certain topics. I have also become comfortable with writing fiction and nonfiction by growing in the knowledge of how to write those genres, which I believe is a great foundation for the writing I hope to do one day, particularly in the short story, monologue, and memoir. These assignments helped me formulate other perspectives through fictional characters and with regard to events that I either created or do not remember well.

Reading a text is difficult, but what is really difficult is trying to understand or remember what you have just read. Our brain alone is just not strong enough to catch on to it in a push of a button. That is why they invented a long term plan to put into action called reading strategies. Some of them include, predict, visualize, identify, infer, etc. although it depends on the person who is using them. Some works wonders but others fall short and doesn 't help us at all, no matter how hard we try. For me, question was the hardest to use, it disappointed me when I figured out that my question was not answered. Plus it distracted me from my goal. My modest used was connect, it advised me throughout some texts, connecting to them by only looking at the title to see if I wanted to read it. However it was frustrating to find a strong connection to go with. Finally I used visualization the most, it gave me a better understanding of the text and created more images to a book with next to none. Visualization was far more beneficial to me because the mind can create pictures very easily which makes no problem to do.

I would have to be honest in saying that over the course of my college career, my standard of writing has seen a fair amount of variation. In courses where I observed that the instructor was not as rigorous in grading writing assignments, I allowed my writing to become more lax. This was evident when I received the grading and comments for the first assignment for this class. My grade was decent, but after analyzing the feedback, I knew that I was capable of producing better work. Many of the mistakes made were thoughtless, avoidable errors. The dissatisfaction I felt towards my efforts on the first assignment motivated me to strive for better results on future assignments. While I did not have very many serious issues to address in my writing, I felt as though the few improvements that were made have a significant impact on my quality of writing.

I want to start by saying thank you for making the time to talk with me about writing # 5 in-person on Monday. As you mentioned, that was a kind of discussion you do not desire to have. I have never imagined myself to be in this type of position either. I truly regret to put us both in such circumstance.

Throughout the year my writing has improved overall. Specifically, my writing process and work ethic have improved. At the beginning of the year I did not trust the writing process, thus leading to me not plan out my writing. In my first essay about Chronicle of a Death Foretold I jumped directly into writing and did not plan, outline or brainstorm ideas. This lack of planning was reflected in my writing. A main problem throughout my early essays was the unclear topic and multiple ideas. As the year progressed and the essay topics got vague, I realized I needed to utilize the writing process and change how I wrote, if I wanted to see improvement. I did not change my writing process overnight. During one of the conferences with Ms. Hursh my questions were all based on the writing process and how I could improve mine, since mine did not exists. I occasionally went in the mornings or shared a Google doc with Ms. Hursh to ask questions about my essays. Frankly I did not utilize Ms. Hursh in the mornings as much as I should have. I improved by utilizing the materials Ms. Hursh gave the class, such as the reverse outline. Yet I still struggled with my writing and making it clear, concise and with only one topic, like in the Macbeth essay. I was omitting a crucial part in the writing process, brainstorming. While in the middle of the year I did complete outlines of my essays and worked on it over a period of time I had yet to ever brainstorm about a topic before jumping in. I
