Autism, a developmental disorder is becoming widely diagnosed here in the U.S. and throughout the world affecting children in all different types of backgrounds. From children living in rural or urban, rich or poor. Currently there are many speculations and superstitions as to the causes for developing autism but science has no clear evidence as to why autism affects certain people and not others, autism can greatly affect the families and its patients for their entire lives. Most of you do not know that I have twin younger brothers with Autism. Before this speech, I had no clue what autism really was. Through my research I am now able to relay this information to you. Today I want to talk about Autism. The three things I will be speaking about is what is Autism? How does autism affect the family and how does autism affect people who have it? Autism or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is shared with a core of other disorders with similar symptoms. The Center for Disease and Control estimates that about 1 in 68 children has been diagnosed with ASD. This means that the chances of this being a reality you face in the future is greater than it seems. There are three main categories of Autism, high functioning, atypical, and classic. Symptoms between all the disorders are relatively the same, being problems with communication and others as well as activities, interests and behaviors defer to how severe they are in a person (GRASU 2015). Classic autism is generally known to be the most severe of the three categories because of the characteristics and symptoms that the individual carries compared to the other types of autism. High functioning autism is a milder type than classic autism, and can also can relate to Asperger’s Syndrome. For people that have high functioning autism, they are very likely to have an average or an above average intelligence. So just because someone may have autism, this does not necessarily mean you are limited to regular learning abilities, however though they will still most likely have the same language delays as classic autism when growing up. The last category is atypical autism which is really similar to classic autism but not quite, the individual will carry the same symptoms of
1 in 68 people in the US have autism, this includes 1 in 189 girls and 1 in 42 boys. Autism is a difference in perception; technically it’s a developmental disorder that is the result of a difference in brain chemicals. Scientists don’t know what causes autism or why it’s stayed in the human gene pool for so long. People with autism could have a wide variety of symptoms, but some of the most common characteristics are fixations on things they like, reliance on routines, and lack of social skills. Autism can be formally diagnosed at ages as young as 3. There is no medical test to diagnose autism, rather a trained professional in the psychology field will perform a developmental screening and a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation. When a child is diagnosed with autism, therapy is strongly recommended. The earlier treatment starts the better because certain aspects of the disorder can be lessened through therapy. Therapy helps the mind and the body, certain therapies can help rebuild your brain, so to speak.
Before doing the research on autism spectrum disorder I thought it was a disease, but not I know it’s a disorder. Autism has actually become a very common disorder and has also became well known. After my speech I hope to have given you guys a better understanding about this disorder so when you guys see the puzzled ribbon you have a clue of what it is.
What is autism? What are the symptoms of autism? There are so many questions about autism, especially there are many children that suffer from different types of autism which are autism disorder, Asperger's syndrome, pervasive development disorder. This essay is going to explain different steps on how to help your child cope with the world or at home. My brother has autism, he was diagnosed when he was two years old which was very interesting and shocking at the same time.growing up with an autistic brother wasn't easy, there were so many things to learn through these eight years, but me and my mom took these steps providing a soothing environment, taking him to therapy, ensure safety around the home, understanding stimming/communication verbal, understanding special interest.
I cannot tell you the exact date, while I’m sure many parents are able to in this circumstance. I can only tell you it was in Spring and my now 10-year-old son, Nino, was 6 years old at the time. I sat in a room after my son’s autism evaluation and heard the words, “Your son has autism. We are diagnosing him at level 2.” I would be lying if I said a tear didn’t fall after those words, but not so much about getting “bad news”, yet, certainly one of those tears fell for that, but the others than came down my cheeks were tears of relief. We now knew what we were dealing with, it had a name. My husband was more in disbelief, but accepted it, and admitted he wondered if there was a genetic link, looking back as his life with his older brother. As we absorbed the news, we knew, how we communicated the diagnosis to our son would play a part in whether he could celebrate who he was, and know how special he was, or if communicated incorrectly, he would feel as if there was something wrong with him. It would mean, he would look at himself as flawed, and awkward, and of little value to society. In this paper, I will do my best to persuade you to embrace, and celebrate such a moment like this in life.
Autism disorder is an issue facing many people today. It’s an issue widely discussed in the news and social media. In Gale’s data from 2015 defines autism as a general term for a group of complex disorders of the brain development that are grouped together under the broader term of autism spectrum disorder also known as ASD. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as of 2014, about 1 in 68 out of 1,000 children were diagnosed with ASD. This was a dramatic increase from 1 in 150 children in 1992. The CDC also
Autism. A simple word with so much meaning and mystery behind it. Autism is so much more than developmental disorder it’s a normal way of life for 1% of the United States population. Autism is a developmental disorder that impairs the ability to communicate or interact. The disorder begins to show itself when children are around 2-3 years old. Children who have this disorder can have symptoms such as troubling talking/delayed speech, sensory issues, little to no social interaction and repetition of words/actions. The range of severity for the disorder can vary. For the past week I have been reading articles about people who suffer from this disorder. One person's story has affected me understanding of the disorder.Stephen Wiltshire is a 44 year old man who has Autism however instead of letting the disorder impact his life he uses it to create brilliant works of art. By reading about Stephen and seeing how he overcomes his struggles my outlook on life has changed.
Autism affects 1 in every 110 children today (NICHCY, 2010). This statistic reveals a considerably large ratio of children and adults who have Autism. In society, everyone is diverse and unique in his or her own way. These differences are apparent in appearance, interest, and abilities. Differences are what shapes individuals into who they are, and who they want to become. Individuals learn differently, and the same is true for children with Autism. Autism is a neurological disorder that affects children up to three years and older. (Autism Speaks, N.D.)
Autism can be defined as a mental condition, present from early childhood, characterized by difficulty in communicating and forming relationships with other people and in using language and abstract concepts (Merriam-Webster Online). Autism can have a wide variety of severity; there is the autism spectrum, which tells educators, whether the child is higher up or lower on the spectrum, or if they are in the middle. There has been a steady increase in the number of students who have been diagnosed with autism, according to Deris (2013); the number of children who have autism went from one in 150 in 2000, almost to one in 88 in 2008.
Autism continues to spark countless discussions and debates throughout the medical field. Some doctors believe that autism is a neurological disorder that can and should be treated, as others continue to think it is simply a difference in human adaption that needs to be nurtured and acknowledged. Regardless of what autism may be, it continues to dramatically rise in the number of children and families affected. With autism being based on such a broad spectrum, the affects and causes leaves the medical world searching for answers in unending stacks of research.
Autism is a disorder, however, there is a wide spectrum that all fall under the category of autism. Typically someone would just say that a child has autism, but there are many different types of autism that people would have to consider when categorizing a child as autistic. There is high-functioning autism, atypical autism, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and pervasive development disorder. High-functioning autism has signs and symptoms that are much less severe than the other kinds of autism on the spectrum. People with high-functioning autism have an average or above average intelligence level. Addressed in WebMD article “High-Functioning Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome,” high-functioning autism is very similar to
Every single day is a struggle for an autistic child and his or her family. Autism affects all aspects of a child’s life from their ability to show affection to their family to being able to do simple tasks such as communicating and thinking in ways that we take for granted. Autism is defined as a developmental disability in which children experience abnormalities in social functioning, language, often act in puzzling ways, and usually appears before the age of three (Mash &Wolfe, 2010). Although the exact causes of autism are unknown there does seem to be a strong genetic component. Having a child or family member with autism is a constant battle of emotion and frustration. Everyone wants to help the people they love when they have
In the United States today, the fastest-growing disability that deals with development is autism(Facts). Autism Spectrum Disorder can be described as “a condition or disorder that begins in childhood and that causes problems in forming relationships and in communicating with other people(Webster).” Although the number of children diagnosed with autism is on the rise, there are many different levels of autism, which can affect how the cases are dealt with. Autism has no cure, but by informing the world, it can help to prepare an autistic child for the future that they hold.

What if I were to tell you that there are cures for autism or even cancer? Many are aware that cancer kills an estimated 595,690 people a year. What if I told you that 5,956,900 people in a span of 10 years could still be alive, but the U.S could lose $18 billion by not medicating them with pharmaceuticals (www.cancer.org). What if it was brought to your knowledge that cancer has been cured multiple times, but the doctors, scientist, or even therapist have mysteriously died prior to their discoveries and findings.
Good morning, potential donors. I have come here today to inform you all about ASDs, and more importantly about the amazing programs that Autism West offers to treat them, with life-changing results.
