The High Renaissance in Italy, although short lived, was extremely important on the influences of future Italian art. During the High Renaissance the main focus on Florence, for the arts, shifted to Rome due to the power and wealth from the popes. Because of the move from Florence to Rome, the two most important factors of this time, Classicism and Christianity, were merged into one. “Italian ideas were also brought northward through trade and commerce into Europe, where they had a tremendous amount of influence on the artistic traditions there as well” (Benton & DiYanni, 2008).

The art and architecture displayed during the Renaissance showed many influences from the ancient Greek and Roman cultures. Middle age architecture led into humanism and classical antiquity, which is shown through many buildings during that time (Deliyannis). Middle Age architecture was influenced by Romanesque architecture. Their buildings had pointed arches, big windows, bigger buildings and more focus on religious styles (Deliyannis). This is evident through the many cathedrals in England. While Middle Age architecture was influenced by Romanesque architecture, Renaissance architecture was influenced by classical antiquity (Hankins). Classical antiquity is known as the revial of the cultures of Greece and Rome. Renaissance architecture focused on symmetry, proportion and geometry. The Pazzi Chapel in Florence was greatly influenced by classical antiquity (Class Notes). This is shown through the rounded arches and big windows of the building. The architecture from the renaissance and the Middle Ages shows the change of building style and the impacts of the influence they received.

Geographically, Italy is comprised of a peninsula that extends into the Mediterranean Sea, as well as two large islands. The shape of Italy has been depicted as a ‘boot’ in many cartoons and drawings for years. The country covers over 116,000 square miles, making it approximately the combined size of Florida and Georgia. Beginning in Florence, Italy, as with much of the other aspects of the Renaissance, the variety of structures and layout would be spread through much of Europe and is still seen even today. Architecture in the revival age mimicked Gothic architecture that was once very popular and was eventually succeeded by Baroque architecture later on in the period. Although it appears to be one of the most developed countries in Europe, Italy is somewhat of a laggard in globalization. Ranking twenty-third in world population, Italy stands at 56,126,212 people as of July 2009. The north and south seem to be split in economic terms with the north being well developed industrially and the south facing high unemployment and poverty. People were walking on the streets, hand gestures everywhere as if they are so passionate about what they are talking about. During the time, Italy stood noticeably apart from the rest of the country in its expansion of this Gothic style in the late 13th century ("Italian Gothic"). Italy has always been known for its exquisite cathedrals, but one of the main attractions for European tourists today is the huge and exquisite Gothic cathedral in Milan (Tyler). It is an immense structure that sits in the middle of the city square (Tyler). Now Italy has many problems in economic sector. The first is that it has very high debt level. Because of it Italy now is in crisis situation.
