Introduction. We all enjoy having a sweet treat every now and then. This sweet treat is almost always full of sugar that is taken by the body and converted into glucose that our body can use as a source of energy or store it for later, this process of using sugar and storing it is done via metabolic reactions. Metabolic reactions are chemical reactions that take place in us and make use of the food and hormones that are our body. Diabetes mellitus, or diabetes for short, will prohibit patients diagnosed with it from having a lot of sugary foods, if not forcing them to avoid sugars completely. I. 3. Gestational diabetes. Unlike type 1 and 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes isn’t permanent. It affects women when they are pregnant and usually ends after the baby is delivered (1, 8). The main causes of gestational diabetes are damage to insulin producing cells, resistance to insulin and genetic heredity. Also, it is believed that women that get gestational diabetes will have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes (1, 8). II. Effects of diabetes. A. Complications that could result from diabetes. According to an article published by Mayo Clinic (source 4), there are many complications, some are even considered life threatening, that may develop in after a person develops diabetes. Doctors agree that the less-controlled your diabetes and the longer you have diabetes, the higher your chance of developing complications that result from diabetes. There is currently no cure for diabetes, nevertheless, all types of diabetes can be treated and managing diabetes starts with diagnosing it. Diagnosis of diabetes could be done by a doctor and the sooner it is diagnosed the less damaging it will be. The information in this section was collected from source 2 page 7. 1. Treatment of diabetes. Treatment of diabetes is important to minimize the harm that is done to the body by diabetes. In addition to exercise and a special diet, type 1 diabetes patients need regular insulin injections to lower the blood sugar levels, while people with type 2 diabetes usually don’t need insulin shots, most of them require insulin tablets in addition to healthy diets and regular exercise and a few don’t even need the insulin tablets. (2, 7) Conclusion It is evident that diabetes has become a real problem something must be done about it. People must start taking care of themselves by eating right and being physically active and healthy if they don’t have diabetes or seeking professional assistance as soon as possible if they already have diabetes. I also believe that government and big organizations need to increase awareness about this dangerous disease and what must be done to avoid
