The book, Inherit The Wind, written by Lawrence and Lee is based on a true event called, “The John Scopes Monkey Trial”, which happened in Tennessee in 1925. This book is about a trail of Evolution versus The Bible. In the book Inherit The Wind there are lots of people but one of them as the biggest reputation and that person is Matthew Harrison Brady is a famous politician loved by the people of Hillsboro. He believes in the word of the bible. He argued against Henry Drummond in the trial of Bertram Cates versus Hillsboro. Unfourntently Brady's negative character traits cause him to lose popularity over the course of the trial. These negative traits are arrogance, need for attention, and closed-mindedness. Firstly, Brady’s arrogance …show more content…
For example, Brady brings attention onto himself during the trial by mentioning how uncomfortable the hot weather makes him feel. This is further proven by the quote “it is called to my attention that the temperature in this courtroom is now 97 degrees Fahrenheit. And it may get hotter! I do not feel that the dignity of the courtroom if we remove a few superfluous outer garments”(page 35). This shows Brady’s constant need for attention as no other individual in the courtroom mentioned the temperature of the courtroom. Moreover, he took out a large handkerchief and mops his forehead and proudly tries to take off his expensive coat. This causes people in the courtroom to laugh as his request seems very ridiculous. Moreover, even after losing the trail Brady tries to give a speech to the people of Hillsboro, but he messes his speech up and turns into a tragic figure. This is proven by the quote As they look to the mountains whence they cometh our strength. And here in the courtroom, we have seen vindicated. We have seen vindicated”(106). Which demonstrates even though Brady lost the trial he desperately tries to hang on to his audience. However, people lost interest in what he is saying at this point. For example, audience members started to talk over him and began leaving during his speech. Additionally, he got the microphone taken away from him. Therefore Brady’s
“Knowledge is power” Sir Francis Bacon. Atticus, a character in To kill a Mockingbird, understands that his knowledge has the power to do many things, including influence the lives of many people. Atticus does his best to influence his children, and educate them every chance he gets. Atticus does his best to teach his children what is right and what is wrong, and in doing this Atticus made one point immensely clear. It is a sin to kill a Mockingbird.
The play Inherit the Wind, was written by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee to inform its readers about the injustice of a law that limited the freedom of an ordinary citizen. This play is based upon actual events that happened to an individual, John Scopes, in Dayton, Tennessee during the 1920’s. This famous “Monkey Trial” not only allowed people to begin to accept new theories about the origin of man, but also showed that they did not have to limit themselves in other areas of life.
Atticus taught Scout a very important lesson after hearing her depressing experience on her first day of school: “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view...until you climb into his skin and walk around it” (39). This book focus on how a person’s perspective determines the way they judge other people. Although Maycomb is a nice town, people in this town have the tendency to put a label on each other. Atticus lives by his principle to ignore the looks and view people by their true intention, he gives people respect first. This line impacted and influenced Scott, so much so that at the end of the story she is able to view others through a different lens. This line shows the theme of courage because
This quotation quite literally means that when someone does something, they do not realize how it affects the person unless they experience it themselves. Atticus is saying “treat people the way you want to be treated” in this quotation. The mob that night was filled with regular people Atticus and the children saw on a daily basis, but there they were not themselves. Scout snapped them back into reality and let them know they were not doing the right thing. The use of wild animals symbolizing the mob truly showcases how strange they were acting due to a single court case. To me, the deeper meaning is that sometimes people do not do the correct thing and it makes them seem like animals, yet at the end of the day they are just like us. (Making a Connection/Interpreting)
To break this law was a minor offense, but it would shake America. Scopes lost the trial, but he showcased a point to the world. The play writers used the Scopes trial to warn of the McCarthy trails, which were happening when it was written. He argued that he had the freedom of speech to teach what he wanted. This is very similar to Inherit the Wind in which Bertram Cates, also intentionally breaks the laws because he believes that he should be able to teach what he wants. In the play, the prosecutor, Mathew Harrison Brady, is a very religious man who believes very strongly in the Bible. He is a priest and basks in popularity and adoration. He is very similar to the prosecutor in the Scopes trial, who is also a religious and popular man. Through the play Inherit the Wind, Mathew Harrison Brady held onto the old ways too tightly, he built his beliefs and life around love and adoration from others, and when that was taken
In his book, Life, The Truth, and Being Free, Steve Maraboli wrote “Judging is preventing us from understanding a new truth. Free yourself from the rules of old judgments and create the space for new understanding.” This quote can be used to describe the changes many in the fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama felt after Tom Robinson, a black man, was killed for a crime he obviously didn’t commit. The people of Maycomb began to realize that the blacks of their community were judged, but no one thought of their lives from their perspective. The theme, before you can judge someone, you must walk a mile in their shoes, can be seen in both To Kill a Mockingbird and modern day society.
I have incorporated important phrases and visuals onto the chair that fit the theme of the book. Starting from the top of the chair I have the quote, “There is a way to be good again.”(pg.2) On the back of that piece I have another quote saying “Maybe Hassan was the price I had to pay. The lamb I had to slay in order to win over Baba.”(pg.82) I put these quotes because they tie each other together well. Amir chose Baba's love over his friendship with Hassan which eventually lead him to be placed into the situation where he chooses to redeem himself. Below this, I have the word redemption because it is the theme of the novel. I painted the quote, “For you, a thousand times over.”(pg.391) on the strip of wood because when Amir said this quote
"You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view ... Until you climb inside his skin and walk around in it," is the concept that Harper Lee used in his book "To Kill A. Mockingbird. The main idea of the whole book is that people are "entitled to think that, and they're entitled to full respect for their opinions... but before I can live with other folks I've got to live with myself. The only thing that does not abide by that majority rule is a person's conscience." These were words spoken by Atticus, but written by Harper Lee. The words can have many different meanings. In the book Harper Lee shows us that killing a mockingbird is wrong because all they do is sing beautifully for the people around them.
This quote is significant because the narrator gives a foreshadowing of what’s to happen in the novel. It hints that the narrator made a huge mistake in his past and tried to forget about it. It suggests that he tried to run away from his past sins instead of facing the consequences, and it didn’t work. He now has to atone for his transgressions, right his wrongs. This quote also says something about the narrator’s character. It shows that he is cowardly, since he buried his mistakes instead of fixing them.
Analysis of To Kill a Mockingbird “Secretly, Miss Finch, I'm not much of a drinker, but you see they could never, never understand that I live like I do because that's the way I want to live.” This was said by Mr. Raymond, he is known for being the town drunk but he says this to Jean Louise because he knows that the racial tensions in the South are unbearable and to be able to live with the woman he loves he acts drunk. He knows that the residents in Maycomb can not understand and thinking that he is drunk all the time helps keep the hate away from them.(Lee, Harper. " Chapter 20. " To Kill a Mockingbird.
In my opinion the most important aspect of the novel,” To Kill a Mocking Bird”
Having someone be disgusted with someone else, or being disgusted with oneself, will make them want to redeem themselves in some way. Nick Gautier is trying to redeem himself to his mother who thinks he has done something majorly wrong. Amir is trying to redeem himself after years of self-persecution. Both characters have done something wrong that makes them feel the need to redeem themselves at some point.
There are lots of things that describe the main character in the book “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind” by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer. Just some of those traits being smart, a very hard worker, and being great at being able to adapt to tough situations that life throws at him along the way.
During the events of The Kite Runner the characters are faced with many unfortunate realities. Although the main characters Amir and Hassan are forced to deal with traumatic events throughout the story, they believe the saying “Better to get hurt by the truth, than comforted with a lie” (Hosseini, ch. 6). The quote is an important one because it can be applied in many contexts, including my own life and be universally accepted that it hurts more when you are lied to rather than being told the truth.
“Sometimes we think people are like lottery tickets, that they're there to make our most absurd dreams come true.” (356).
