Organizations have concentrated on near sourcing as close to marketplaces, instead of acquiring supplies and subcontracting work, which was a less inexpensive way of doing business (Russell et al., 2014). With an example provided to the reader, Russell et at (2014) explained from recent changes displayed in United States imports of goods and how the attraction of sources was growing in the U.S. Around the time, of the oil price increase, in 2008, growth rates of imports from reduced cost sources in Asia had dropped annually, while at the same time, near shore sources in the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean had increased (Russell et al., 2014). International transportation elements of supply chains are shortened and distance driven costs are lower because supply sources are relocating closer to consumers (Russell et al., 2014). With near sourcing, from places like the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean, offers advantages. For example, with imports coming in from Latin America and the Caribbean through the U.S East Coast ports, shippers not only avoid the congestions on the West Coast entry ports, they are able to bypass cross country movement that are expensive from West Coast ports to populated distribution centers in the east (Russell et al., 2014). Business can quickly adjust freight movements to change at the request of customers’ demands, by means of shortened distance and lower risk of congestion and delays (Russell et al.,
The cost associated with the physical transfer of goods is an essential piece of information in the negotiation of an international trade transaction. To maintain a product’s competitiveness, the seller must make sure that his cost is as low as possible. However, in any particular supply chain, this cost is made up of a number of cost elements corresponding to services that enable physical linkages between supply chain members. These elements cannot always be clearly quantified beforehand.
China’s underdeveloped infrastructure, in particular the land transport system and connection between different forms of transportation, slowed down distribution, increased logistic costs, and finally hindered expansion into rural regions (p.13). As a result of this slow transportation, Wal-Mart’s two distribution centers couldn’t serve the entire country adequately. On the other hand, these distribution centers were significantly underused due to small amount of stores. Consequently, the retailer couldn’t benefit from cost saving through its distribution approach (p.14). Furthermore, communication with the retailer’s 15,000 local suppliers was inefficient and costly due to the lack of an information-technology network (p.14).
As the world has gotten “smaller” in terms of trade, outsourcing has become a hot topic in much political and economic debate in the United States.
The authors also write about the inability to no longer be able to customize products and services to customer needs due to shipping container space limitations and month long order times limiting flexibility and responsiveness of supply chains (p. 1). They went on to say that due to these inflexible supply chains customers would no longer be able to receive goods, services, and products tailored to their needs although I did not find conclusive enough evidence in the writing to agree with its inclusion. I believe this portion of the article was an attempt to persuade the reader by using examples of possible frustrations customers would experience. Although these issues may be true, I did not see the research necessary to support the claims.
Therefore, for companies in the 5th region, it will become cheaper to handle goods through East Coast ports, although doing so will add a few weeks to the total transit time but a justification for this potential switch will highly depend on a company’s time preferences, price sensitivity, and costs of working capital.
American corporations have found investing in manufacturing overseas to be very economical. The US has been offshoring manufacturing excessively for the last 20 plus years. Consequently, the United States has a dilemma: our country imports more goods than it exports, the U.S. is developing a serious skills gap, and jobs that would boost the domestic economy are being shipped overseas. The truth is not too many goods are actually “Made in the USA”.

1.1 Did it surprise you that logistics has such an important economic impact? Why or why not? I was actually not surprised at all. I have learned that shipping industry has played a major role in our economy and that foreign trade accounted for about 10% of US GPD. As of today about 90% of America’s overseas foreign trade is moved by ships and according to recent projections the foreign trade will be up to 35% of our GPD by 2020.
When considering methods to improve and benefit from supply chain efficiencies, Senco has taken the first step in identifying its needs in a competitive market. When looking at today’s competitive markets, Coyle identifies that Globalization is the most frequently citied change factor by business leaders and is the dominant driving force in world economics (2017). Looking at the prospects of overseas supply chains or connecting over such a vast distance, technology and the 24/7 online environment can successfully keep the overseas manufacturing connected to the remainder of the supply chain back in the states. Also, government policy and regulations are leading cause behind Senco’s decision to evaluate the overseas prospects in the first place. Much like deregulation in the U.S. in the 1970s and 1980s drove down pricing in areas such as transportation by allowing more competition, similarly the same principle of overseas competitive environments create

Transport plays a critical role in the supply chain and according to Bhattacharya et al. (2014) it is becoming one of the key components of the whole supply chain valuation for many organizations. Transportation is the movement of good from one location to another. Supply chain is a network of individuals, organizations, activities, resources and technology that is involved in formation and sale of a product, which is from the delivery of source materials from the supplier to the manufacturer, through to the end user. Hopkins (2007) states that supply chain professionals look at whole business procedures, which is from raw materials to manufacturing, wholesaling and retailing. And by
