First of all, Jackie Robinson was the first black baseball player in the major leagues, setting an example so others could follow, integrating baseball forever. When he joined the major leagues, he “smashed the unwritten law that kept blacks out of the big leagues.”(Robinson) When he joined the Dodgers, he faced verbal and physical threats, angry and racist fans. Even with all these people hating him, he worked hard to be the best player he could be, not another NLB player. Robinson later said that Mr.Ricky “Chosen me as the person to lead the way.” When Jackie heard this, he responded by ignoring the bad things and focusing on the good things and people who gave him support.”I had become the first black player in the major leagues.”(Robinson) This shows that Jackie

Jackie Robinson was an African American that was treated unfairly during the time of his professional baseball career. He was put through segregation because he was the only black player in the MLB at the time, and he was also treated poorly by his teammates, coaches, fans and even other players from different teams. Jackie Robinson was an important and influential figure in history that had a positive impact on the world and the entire baseball association because he was the first African American to play in Major League Baseball (MLB) in the modern era and used baseball as a way to contribute to the Civil Rights movement.

Jackie robinson made a huge difference in history back in 1947 when he was the first african american the play baseball in history . He took chances by stepping on dodger field even when he got threats that the people would beat him up or kill him. Jackie stood tall and did not care what people thought about him or his color.In the season when Jackie started doing well with the Dodgers, Dodger fans got happy but they also had a lot of complaints about Jackie playing ball.Even though Jackie got many threats he keep playing the game and sacrifice his life to make a stand for the game he loved.Now today Jackie number 42 is retired and no one can have that number in the MLB.

Jackie did many things to help the colored community, and to raise awareness of the inequality that was going on at that time. Jackie Robinson was the first African American man to play in Major League Baseball. While Robinson was playing baseball for the Brooklyn Dodgers he had to face the “resentment” of not only baseball fans but his fellow teammates and other teams. In paragraph three the text states,” It hadn't been that easy to fight the resentment expressed by players on other teams, by the team owners, or by bigoted fans screaming "n-----"(Robinson). This quote shows how people were disgusted by Robinson because of his skin color, but he didn’t let them get to him.This was challenging for him because it was hard to not fight back. Though instead of fighting back he proved himself worthy on the field and this helped him grow as a stronger person. Also, another way Robinson was challenged by his society was that the press was telling Robinson he was only in the Major Leagues to make a profit. In paragraph seven the text states,”Are you stupid enough not to understand that the Brooklyn club profited hugely,”(Robinson) This quote explains how Robinson had to deal with the press and keep in his mind that he was in the major Leagues for his talents, not the profit.  In addition he grew to be tolerant through this event. One last experience Robinson had to face was threats of danger. In paragraph three the text states,’’There were threats against me and my family and even out-and-out attempts at physical harm to me,”(Robinson). This quote explains how even though Robinson had racial tension, the reason he didn’t fight back was because he was a good person. This quote explains how Robinson had to be cautious of his surroundings. Also he had grown to be fearless through these experiences. In a show of support, Reese temporarily left his position at shortstop and traveled over to Robinson at first base and put his arm around the rookie, silencing the crowd, which was awed by the act of racial empathy by Reese, a popular All-Star from nearby Kentucky.”. One of the major contributions he had to the United States was fighting for civil rights. These contributions were made by his hardwork and determination to be a great player. Jackie Robinson lived in the era of racism and extreme segregation. Jackie was not a bystander when it came to these issues in our country. Being the first African American in baseball he left a huge impact on the racial barrier.

Jackie Robinson forced individuals to look at their prejudices and helped them realize they needed to make changes. The idea of the general population was that baseball should remain segregated. Most coaches and baseball fans thought there were not any black players who were good enough to play professionally, and were afraid that the white community would not pay money to see Negro’s play baseball. Jackie’s first year in baseball put those poor excuses to rest. In his first season, Robinson led the league with a .349 batting average and scored 113 runs in 124 games. He had forty stolen bases, which was the second highest total in the league, and he was the lead second basemen in fielding. During his first major league game, Jackie reached first base on an error in the seventh inning and scored the game winning run. Also in his first season, Robinson hit twelve home runs and helped the Dodgers win the National League pennant. Jackie was determined to show the nation that black people could play baseball just as well as the white baseball players. He didn’t just prove that blacks can play professional sports in America, but that black people could excel in professional sports as well. Robinson became “a hero not only to blacks and all baseball fans, but to every American, who valued justice. The door was open”(Rappoport & Wilner, p.22). Jackie’s gift for the game helped open up the conversations of individuals that would lead to a lasting change in America as we know it. People began to realize that the color of your skin doesn’t affect who you are on the inside or how you function on the outside. Awareness in the civil right movement encouraged more people to try to accomplish their dreams and goals without racial boundaries. Segregation, discrimination, slavery and being bound by the Jim Crow Laws were an era that many African Americans were subjected to. So many things have changed over the last 60 years that it is hard to believe that such ignorance even existed.
