Jasper Jones is a 2009 novel aimed at young adults, which focuses on the death of Laura Wishart, and the journey protagonist Charlie Bucktin and his friend Jasper Jones undergo in order to discover to truth of her death. Throughout the novel, the 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany’s, which was aimed at adult women is mentioned, in an interesting use of intertextuality by author Craig Silvey. Eliza Wishart, younger sister of Laura, dreams of a life in New York as Holly Golightly of Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and Silvey uses this as a way to explore escapism. In the novel Jasper Jones, Craig Silvey provides us the audience an insight into the characters’ pursuit of truth by exploring overarching ideas such as Fear, Racism and Scapegoating and linking them with character dialogue as well as narrator descriptions. The main truth presented by Craig Silvey is the investigation of Laura Wishart’s death, by pursuing this truth Charlie uncovers truths about his family and town. I believe that by using these overarching ideas, silver is able to offer us a deep insight into the characters’ pursuit of truth.

Jasper Jones is a novel based Australian mystery and drama filled film directed by Rachel Perkins, which premiered in 2017. The protagonist of the plot is a 14 year old boy called Charlie Buctan whose life changes when the town’s only Aboriginal boy approaches his window in the middle of the night for help in covering the dead hanging body of Gywn Wishart from a tree. Charlie reluctantly helps in drowning her body into the lake, beginning their adventure to find the true culprits of the murder while unravelling many secrets and social issues. The film explores and shows its audience its genres of mystery, drama and thriller using the themes surrounding racism, secrets, guilt and sympathy through the use of cinematography techniques, sounds and the plot. These themes and genres of the film are supposed to be depicted in the collage titled “Charlie’s Mind Map,” which I constructed to show a finished product of the mind-map Charlie started in the film, yet with the addition of portraying its themes and genres to the audience of teenagers whom may have possibly viewed the film.

In 1960s, rural Australia, racism and prejudice is at a high. This period of time was a very dark era for those of noticeably different races. During the 1960s, the Vietnam War was taking place and involved over 50,000 Australian troops. Due the issues of this time it added to the overall intensity of rural Australia. “Jasper Jones” written by Craig Silvey introduces us to a world during this time.

Some have more courage than others do. In the book To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee, Atticus, a father of two and lawyer, stands up for a colored man in a court of law. At first, the readers just see him as a studious, quiet father, who has unique parenting strategies, but as the book progresses, Atticus's character grows. His courage, honesty, boldness, and scruples shape his life. In the trial with Tom Robinson, this shows especially. His determination to create the best case he can even though the odds are stacked against him, show the perseverance and strength of mind he has. Throughout To Kill a Mocking Bird Atticus's character grows as a genuine, brave, godly, man.

Courage is not facing a problem without any fear. Courage is facing an obstacle despite their fear. Standing up for what they believe in, even though there will be negative consequences. That is true courage. The book “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee does a great job of showing this.

George Jones’s music represents old country which is known for love songs. There are many types of love. George jones and many others such as Merle Haggard and Hank Williams Jr. have experienced love in good ways and in bad ways.

Even when pressured to fight physically by those who disagree with him, Atticus maintains composure and decides that it is better to remain more stoic than reactive towards any opposition. This conscious choice can be seen when Atticus is sitting outside the County Jail, protecting Mr Robinson from being lynched by the angry opposers of Atticus. Despite being in extreme danger, Atticus chooses not to wield a gun, and instead arms himself with nothing but wit and words. Lee’s bold choice not to give Atticus a traditional weapon with which to defend himself is an action which speaks in support of true courage being more than the simple image of a man and his weapon. That night, Lee gives Atticus the possibility of dying, and shows how willing he is to support a cause he has belief in even if the chances are not in his favour. Atticus Finch, the father of Jem and Scout in the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, is a magnificent character. He displays several qualities which makes him an interesting character. Atticus Finch is compassionate. This is evident when Atticus Finch, a lawyer is appointed by the local judge to defend Tom Robinson, a black man, who is accused of raping a white woman. Atticus discouraged violence, but strongly stands up for what he believed in.

The sentimental and thought-provoking story begins by establishing the nucleus of the film, the Finch Family, lead by the father Atticus Finch, who is the quintessential father, strong, honest, intuitive, and spoke with wisdom; whose character was consistently imparted to his children through small teachings on life as it unfolds. One such example shows Atticus hugging Scout as they swing back and forth on the front porch, He tells her, "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view, until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." In another scene after being teased at school for her father defending a Negro, Scout questions her father as to why he chose to take the case. He states that if he didn't he would be unable to "hold his head up high", or even tell his children what to do anymore. Given the standard of that day, Atticus was risking his reputation and even the safety of his children by defending a black man.
