When many are asked to name a hero, they think of names such as Batman, Supergirl, or Spider-Man. The true definition of a hero is not a person with superpowers, but someone who will stand up for what is right, no matter the costs. Also, a hero overcomes difficult life problems, is willing to do good no matter his conditions, and will sacrifice himself for others. In The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, Johnny Cade fits these heroic traits. Johnny overcame many life problems that would have turned someone bitter or a coward. He was raised in a terrible home, with his physically abusive father and verbally abusive mother. His family life was traumatic, with his physically abusive father and verbally abusive mother. He had terrible role models who were criminals, hoods, and thieves. Even through all the gangs, blood, and violence Johnny still stood up for what was right. There are many examples of Johnny doing good even when his conditions were rough. Johnny performed a good deed by defending Cherry Valance from Dallas Winston’s chastising at a drive-in. Also, he saves Ponyboy from being drowned by Bob and his friends. Johnny did this on many occasions throughout The Outsiders. First Johnny saved Ponyboy from being drowned by a Soc. Even though this could have caused Johnny to be beaten or killed by Bob and his gang, he was still willing to sacrifice his well-being for Ponyboy. Furthermore, when a house was burning down with two children inside, Johnny rushed to save them. He did this with the knowledge that he could be killed or seriously injured. He saved the children with Ponyboy’s help, but he was killed by all the injuries he sustained. Even through all this he was willing to die for the children. Johnny left a note saying, “I don't mind dying now. It's worth it. It's worth saving those kids.” Johnny willingly dies to save, and that makes him a
