Katniss Everdeen Character Analysis

In the novel “The Hunger Games” Suzanne Collins conveys the qualities of a hero through the main character Katniss Everdeen. The novel is based around a dystopian nation, in which is placed in Panem. Through which a boy and a girl from each district must take part in ‘The Hunger Games’ where they have to fight to the death, until there is one survivor. Katniss subsequently evolves as a significant hero portraying the heroic qualities such as selflessness, identity change and intelligence. Selflessness is shown as she puts others before herself, her identity changes as she has to put up a brave face, and intelligence is displayed as her strategies progress in the games.

Given these symptoms (examples above) and the fact that they have lasted more than year can help us determine the Katniss Everdeen is suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The criterion from DSM-5 on PTSD has also helped in determining the correct diagnosis for Katniss. The traumatic event that lead Katniss to develop PTSD was that she was forced to survive by killing foes and comrades alike. Too often she was placed in situations that were either to kill or be killed by other tributes. Situations like those escalated the risk of becoming another survivor of PTSD. Neither of these characters expected to be put into the role of care giver for another person but despite the setback they both overcame and did what they had to do to care for those who needed them. In the Hunger Games Katniss is considered something new and unheard of. She stands out as a strong female not afraid to do what she needs to do to strive and care for herself and the needs of others, and make it out of the game. She’s the character in the story that leaves you wanting to know more, “She’s active, she’s strong and she’s the girl who motivates the story.”

Katniss Everdeen is not a normal girl, she is a teenager who had to grow up fast within District Twelve. After losing her father to a mine accident, Katniss had to become an adult and be the sole provider for her family. Her mother detached herself from her role as a parent, which meant Katniss not only had to become the provider but also the nurturer of the family. This gives her the role of being the mother and father to her sister

She feels like once her dad died she shut her and her sister out and didn’t take very good care of them. Katniss expected her mom to find a job so she would be able to buy the necessities they needed. Finally the relationship with Katniss and her sister is a very good relationship. Like Katniss says “How could I leave Prim, who is the only person in the world I’m certain I love?” (Page 18, Suzanne Collins).

When faced with an unjust government system one strong-willed teenager faces abundant obstacles to ensure the survival of her family and herself. At the age of sixteen Katniss Everdeen is already providing for her family, and breaking the laws enforced by the Capitol every day to do so. Katniss is then thrown into a competition were the penalty for losing is death. While balancing her responsibilities as provider and fighter she must also put on an impressive act as a lover; under the suspecting eyes of President Cornelius Snow. The day that her true struggles begin is that day of which all civilians of District 12 loathe. This is the day of the reaping.

Katniss was always very close to her little sister Prim. Prim meant the world to her and she always did her best to protect her. Katniss loved Prim so much that she even put her own life before hers when she “stepped up to take Prim’s place”(24) as tribute. Katniss’ father was a very influential on her. He taught her how the woods could provide for her but also that they could be dangerous. Even after he had died he was still important to her. After her dad past, Katniss’ mother became drastically depressed and was unable to provide for her children. Katniss never truly forgave her for abandoning them in their time of need. Her father died in an explosion years earlier and left Katniss to become virtually the sole provider for her family that consist of her younger sister Prim, and her mother.
