I chose to analyze Amazon's webpage, specifically, their Kindle page. The Kindle is an electronic reader device that functions as both a tablet and a computerized version of a book. The website for the Amazon Kindle appeals to the nostalgia one has of reading books, as well as the tech-savvy advantages of the world we live in that seem to appeal to the majority of us. The design of the product is sleek, simple, and easy to use, while the website for the product is informational without being overwhelming. The Kindle and its website use devices like color, alignment, simplicity, similarity, and other convenient and helpful design aspects to give consumers all the joys of reading without the traditional limitations of a normal book. (Figure 1) Figure 1: The Kindle is designed to give readers the familiarity of a book, plus new technological advances. There are several rhetorical strategies employed, including …show more content…
The principle of contrast is most clearly seen in the various types of font and size used to emphasize headings and concepts of importance. Each of the largest headings summarizes the following text in a catchy and concise way. Beyond that, each subsection is bolded, discussing sections of interest that fall within the broader headings. Alignment adds to this appeal because it gives an aesthetic quality to the text that is easier and more pleasant to read. The use of images and visuals is a consistent theme throughout the webpage, and it adds to the design quality in that consumers are more easily able to place themselves in the role of Kindle users, imagining themselves, like the people in the images, happily and relaxed while reading a good book from their Kindle's library. In addition, these images add color and vibrancy to an otherwise black-and-white textual format. They help to break up the monotony and keep readers
He gathered research from several credited writers, studies, and universities who have done research about the effects of reading on the web. Carr uses his own personal experience, ideas we can relate to, and analysis backed by research to connect to the audience and persuade them that the internet is causing reading focus and comprehension problems in our current society.
Most can admit that the soft white glow of a screen, filled with quick motions, conversations, and vibrant colors is far more intriguing and draws people like moths to a flame rather than the wordy and numerous pages of any literary work that has to make them think. For many, reading has become a chore when every fact, opinion, abridged book, show, or even funny cat pictures and other irrelevant and distracting thing is readily available to clutter and scatter thought. Technology caused people to abandon intelligent thought, books, and things that in the past were valuable. The display of people’s reaction reading a passage from a book and their blatant disgust towards it, to the simple lack of desire for reading a book is
Instead of pushing back against the tides of technological innovation, literary elites and authors must realize that technology can be used as a way to endorse reading. If technology is to be employed for the promotion of reading and the impediment of aliteracy, scholars must first modify their opinions on technology itself; they must recognize that engaging and challenging the mind can also be accomplished through video games. “Many role-playing games require the player to solve intricate puzzles in order to advance through a deep plot,” and video games often “bring the player into an active and dynamic world where thought is required to solve complicated puzzles” (Ofstad). Condemning technology will not spawn progress in the crusade against aliteracy, instead it will further isolate the younger culture of potential readers that have grown up in a culture that promotes technological modernizations. The online company Amazon has successfully executed the blending of technology with reading. By selling books online and utilizing social networks, Amazon has been encouraging its consumers to read and buy books. Its “Customer reviews, personalized book lists, and an almost unlimited supply of books give the user something of a virtual ‘social’ environment in which great books can
Technological advancement is constantly occurring within this generation. It happens so often that we as a group are no longer amazed or amused by it-it is expected. In both Love’s and Hayle’s texts, the reader learns that technological advancement impacts a skill that most people believe to have a good grip on-reading comprehension. “Most psychologists assume that people read entire blocks of text on a screen in much the same way as on paper-at least once factors such as eyestrain, scrolling time, and page refresh rates are accounted for” (Love 6). Love is arguing that reading online has more distractions than reading actual print, which is a given. From opening up a new tab and searching for something on the Internet to being able to look up the definition of a word directly on your E-Reader, “screen reading” seems more tedious and demanding than simply opening up a paperback book or actually buying a newspaper in a store (Love 6).
I do not know why, but I found myself not interested in books. In general, I think in out culture, reading is not popular as other cultures, and those who love reading is just an exception where the majority do not read. In addition, however, there is a generational shift towards reading habit, I think me and my generation do not read books as those in the previous two or three decades, and that’s due to many factors. Technology is one of the most important factors, one the other hand, Kindle is exploiting technology to make people love reading and it succeeded in doing so with me and others. Unsurprisingly, a study shows that those of age between 19 to 29 are the most prolific E-book readers (1). However, this artifact (E-book) is posing any considerable threat to the hardcopy book industry in the near future. There’s a report shows that a few readers have abandoned the hardcopy books for E-books

Initially, the publishing industry was considered to have less likeliness of encountering the same jolting upheaval as experienced by the music industry upon the introduction of new technologies. The evolution towards the digital age is expected to be quite smooth due to several factors. These factors include continuing attachment of the readers towards the paper, limited levels of electronic piracy, and complementary nature possessed by e-books and paper. The power of word is expected to increase. Bain & Company conducted a survey spanning over 3,000 consumers from six countries and three continents (United States, Japan, Germany, France, United Kingdom and South Korea). The survey indicated that readers are inclined towards reading more when they are

The Amazon Kindle for the iPad app takes viewing a book a step further and only do users can manipulate text size and screen brightness, but they are also able to change the page from
Typography employs the technique of arranging type in a visually appealing way to make a document legible and to provoke interest. Inadequate use of typography may leave a reader struggling and disgruntled which is why it is important to know the basics of creating an appealing document. Through the utilization of good typography, people will feel encouraged to read a document rather than feel unmotivated. The reason that typography matters is that a reader is a writer’s most valuable asset and the writer does not want to lose a reader due to an unappealing layout. The use of certain typographical devices such as typeface, font size, scaling, emphasis, leading, and kerning, foreshadows the type of reader that the document will attract which is left completely in the hands of the writer.
“We have already seen how limited user and author control of presentation was before CSS. The typographic possibilities offered by CSS are, by comparison to <font>, vast. In fact, the more advanced CSS selectors begin to take CSS to a level where things impossible in print page layout applications
An effective-designed website is important to catch the attention of visitors in the first place and help to keep them to exploring further into it. Ikea has content displayed and organized consistently across its site. Information is presented in a readable manner with effectively use of white space between text and image. White space allows visitors to feel more relax and focus on the content or message that Ikea try to convey through the site as its
Kindle is classified as an electronic reader which was released by Amazon in 2007. The Kindle is a handy and convenient e-book reader that "provided the company with a way of maximizing sales of trade and other publications by catering to the wants of the digital public" (Sapon-White, 2012). With the help of the wireless internet connections, it allows a customer to shop, download books, magazines and newspapers which are available in digital format. The device is a portable, handheld device with a full keyboard. Decorative covers are available but the readers are sold with the black and white covers as default ones. Kindle can hold about 3500 e-books. There are great advantages in wireless delivery for consumers in Kindle. Users can watch a program or listen to a podcast or buy the book immediately. The delivery takes maximum 60 seconds to the user. The little weight of the device is an added advantage for those of us suffering from lower back strain from years of carrying heavy books (Cheshire, 2009). There are several disadvantages as well. Digital rights management on content and the complex process of migrating from other formats are some of them.
Analyzing some aspects of the relationship between print and digital reading. A first essential aspect: more than indicating the substitution of texts printed by the digital ones, the readers of our universe of research coexistence of these two formats (Dourish & Mazmanian, 2013). There is no disjunction, for the readers that would take the form of reading in print or digital, reading in one or the other; is verified in the practice that readers read both. This reading in both must be nuanced, as it is not a matter of reading everything in print and digital, regardless. Some interesting relationships are drawn. First, text size influences support preferences (Mollen, 2016). Texts large ones are preferably read in print; texts can be read in such a way that both in print and in digital.
