As a young child, I was always drawn towards the field of health care. I remember reading about the many options that are held within it and wondering what path it would lead me on. Neonatal nursing was something that always came into my mind, but it was often pushed to the side by people and teachers who thought I should become a pediatrician instead. This became a real struggle for me, but as I grew up and began researching and exploring the health care field I came to a decision for myself. I came to the realization that everyone was wrong. The nurse I chose to interview has been a family friend for a while, as she has worked closely with my mother for several years. She is the first nurse I met when I decided I was interested in going into the nursing field, and she is actually the person who encouraged me to apply to Truman State University’s nursing program. I was confident that she would be able to share her capacity of nursing knowledge and wisdom with me when I asked if I could interview her. Other registered staff in my unit often comes to me for problem solving and troubleshooting with our online documentation program. Becoming a Labor and Delivery Nurse is the one thing that I have always wanted to be. Helping all the mothers to be, bring their newborn babies into the world. I’ve worked for DaVita dialysis for two years; before changing careers I worked in early childhood education for 8 years. After working as an NICU nurse for five years, I wanted to advance my career and started contemplating my direction. Throughout my sister-in-law’s labor, I was by her side, coaching and encouraging her along the way. Being a mother myself, I knew what to expect during a birth, but now seeing the experience from a different point of view, it changed my life. Becoming a Registered Nurse is my goal, but I hope to one day work as a labor and delivery nurse. After marrying my husband and having children, I made the commitment to myself that once they started elementary school, I would begin working toward my goal of becoming a Registered Nurse. It has been 12 years since I graduated high school, so the fears and uncertainty of what to expect and if I could succeed almost stopped me from moving forward.

I was advised that this would be the way to get experience and to find out if patient care is really what I wanted to do in life. After working a year doing in home patient care, I got offered and took a job working at Hershey Medical Center as a technician in the Emergency Department. This was the best learning experience and job that I could have asked for to prepare myself for the journey towards a nursing degree. Although it may sound cliché, ever since I was a little girl I had the desire to work in the medical field, whether it be a doctor or a nurse. The desire stemmed from listening to my aunt tell stories about operations that she had assisted in, or patients that she had seen and their perplexing ailments. I was never phased by blood, and watching how the human body worked was something that made me excited and eager to learn more. When I was first asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I proudly said, an anesthesiologist. Since that day, I’ve worked hard to reach each milestone that will help me get closer to my goal. My intended future goal is to become a CRNA, which requires the successful completion of my nursing degree.

It was on my very first day of Childbearing clinical, that a precipitous, natural delivery of a Hispanic woman surrounded by nurses sealed my fate. As I watched in awe from the corner while holding the woman’s son, I realized that I had to be a part of the maternal-infant field. Since graduating with my Bachelors in Science of Nursing, I have directed and dedicated my career in preparation for my ultimate goal of becoming a Certified Nurse Midwife.
