Welcome to K.A.S.S, we have a Hawaii like landform. We chose this location because it is environmentally sound. Our climate is pretty mild and warm. We have about 1500 people population. We have a recycling center, to reduce the amount of waste being put in our landfill. The population of our cites is large because it is well liked. We don’t have any chemicals in our landfill like system. We have a sewage power plant that discards of our trash in a safe way and we reuse it in any way possible. We also have a another way to dispose of our waste that kind of works like a landfill. Our residents have trash bins that they load their trash into then they put it out in front of their house on a certain day of the week. Then we have trash men that …show more content…
For WM the fuel, environmental charge included on a customer’s invoice is determined by first putting in the percentage of the WM Collection Fuel Surcharge Table or WM Disposal Fuel Surcharge Table into the overall invoice charges (excluding taxes). Next the environmental percentage is put in the sum of the total invoice charges and fuel surcharge calculation (excluding tax). Landfills produce harmful gases that if breathed in by people can cause serious health issues. The gases they let off also can ignite huge fires. If the water gets contaminated, then there is a long process to get to clean again and it cost 10 million dollars. Landfills also create a toxic soup of industrial and home-cleaning chemicals. These are just some of the impacts that solid waste management has on people and environments. My group has come up with different ways to solve these …show more content…
Jobs require many things, for example,Industrial engineering deals with the organization of materials, people, and equipment in the production process. Environmental engineering is a field that has and manages the public's demand for clean air and water and listens to their concerns over the damage being done to the earth and ecological systems from pollution. Architectural engineering is closely related to architecture. Whereas architecture emphasizes the aesthetics, design and function of the built
I am writing this letter to you to discuss the ideas I have to help with the problem of affordable housing in Ohio. Specifically getting homeless people off the street. This would help with the overall cleanliness of our state and be a more prosperous country.
Other features of Hawaii, such as the economy, also effect trash management, namely tourism. In 2015 about 8.5 million people visited Hawaii—that’s almost six times as much as its population of 1.4 million (Hawaii Tourism Authority). Though city and state governments in Hawaii encourage waste consciousness, tourists are often not aware of the waste problems. Though only estimates are available, it is clear that tourists and tourist centered businesses produce a significant amount of waste, as well as a large amount of water and power consumption (Saito). Tourists don’t have to deal with the problems they contribute to, so they can easily ignore the issues.
In the span of 50 years, the population of humans on this planet have reached all-time highs and continue to rise and with this rise comes the effects of overpopulation. The planet cannot sustain so many people during such a short span of time. Not only is there a loss of space for new generations of humans to live on, but there has been an excessive use of natural resources before there is a chance to replenish them such as food, natural gases, and water. The problem of overpopulation seems to truly encompasses all other aspects of the factors leading to the sixth mass extinction such as habitat loss and global warming. The population must be feed and because of this, million upon millions of acres of land once inhabited by a whole ecosystem have been converted to farmland to provide food for the growing population. In addition, the increase in leads to an increase in waste and therein arises a problem: where to put the waste. In the United States alone, “4.39 pounds of trash per day and up to 56 tons of trash per year are created by the average person” Landfills seemed to be the perfect solution for this problem, however, over the years, “landfill managers have been emphasizing just how quickly they are running out of space. The more people there are on the planet, the more waste is being produced. Some of this waste is quite toxic, and even landfills which are
Today, garbage is collected with highly polluting diesel fueled trucks and then that garbage is brought to transfer stations where the waste is then sorted and transported to another solid waste management facility for further processing, treatment, transfer or disposal. This process is again handled using highly polluting diesel fueled trucks that ship it to landfills and waste to energy incinerators in other states. The long-term plan introduced is to reduce costs drastically increasing recycling which in turn will reduce waste and to build a waterfront transfer system in order to be less dependent upon the highly polluting diesel trucks and use barges hauling containers to ship garbage and also trains to transfer the waste. (Transfer
Stores and Restaurants are mandated to keep trash bins within 10 feets of entrance, as evidenced by a research done by Walt Disney Co that determined people litter if trash bins are further than 25 steps. (Being a Good Neighbor, 2015) However, I do believe unless people are made aware that their lackadaisical attitude towards littering could lead to ill health of people including their own, and could negatively impact their financial well being, they are unlikely to change their behavior. Local authorities should spend tax dollars pro-actively training people on how they could positively impact the environment by categorizing waste into recycle, reuse and disposing effectively. Businesses in the area could encourage their employees to spend some hours in annual neighborhood cleanup, or adopt a street for cleanup on a monthly
Anywhere you look around the United States landfills can be found. If you are lucky enough to pass by one, the site is probably seen reaching capacity. Sometimes you might not even see them before your nose catches the putrid scent. These landfill sites sure are not popular but they are very much a necessity to our lives. Imagine what we would do with all the trash if we did not have somewhere to go with it? Unfortunately, landfill sites do have negative side effects on the environment. Three of the top concerns related to landfills are toxins released in the air coming from items such as electronic waste, liquid trash contaminating the land and waterways, and greenhouse gas emissions like methane. With the world on watch with heightened awareness
Historically, the state of garbage in California has not been that pleasing. Most of the landfills in the State are currently overused as some continues to get worse with time. This probably is the case because by the year 2013, only 36.6% of the entire waste products in United States were actually recycled. Moreover, according to the findings presented from CalRecycle study, the existing organic wastes constitute 32.4% of all the waste product. Sadly, these organic wastes pose a significant threat to the surrounding environment (Donovan). The common practice of burying solid wastes in a landfill is confirm dangerous to the environment because of the chemicals that later build up beneath the earth surface hence producing Leachate, a poisonous
Finally, there is a way to fight against landfills, and it is called recycling! Dictnary.com said that recycling is to “convert (waste) into reusable material.” If we recycle we can save energy, reduce pollution, conserve natural resources, help new jobs to be made in recycling business, and reduce trash in the landfills. Www.conserve-energy-future.com clarrifies “2000 pounds of recycled paper can actually help to save 17 trees, over 350 gallons of oil, and a lot of landfill space!” We need to recycle to save mother earth. Consequently recycling is the perfect way to fight
Everyday, each American creates 4.3 pounds of waste such as paper, cardboard, and much more; but where does it all go? As Americans, we go to the grocery shop. What do you use to carry your items? Your answer should be a reuseable bag. Sadly, the majority’s answer is plastic or paper bags. In addition, when the landfills are at capacity it is a health hazard to many. The overfilled waste causes an unhealthy environment to live in. People need to conserve more of their resources, or there will be several very negative side effects.
One reason to prove that landfills have many drawbacks is because landfills can harm the environment and the living organisms around that specific environment. Vermin are often associated with landfills. Vermin are animals that are often associated with disease. Along with disease other health issues such as birth effects, cancer, and respiratory
The slow release from the landfill entails a dilution in time, which is hazardous. Landfills are disposal sites for waste which cannot be reused, recycled and recovered. “Waste is typically burnt at factories, but the waste which cannot be reused is taken to landfills where it is dumped”, (Spokas and Bogner, 2006: 516). Waste is taken to landfills to prevent pest infections, odour and litter. Once the waste is dumped and the landfill is to its full capacity, trained engineers build a cap out of clay and other solid materials. This is then covered with soil and other materials so that the site can be used for other things in the future such as nature conservation and agricultures. This is repeated for all sites.” Accordingly landfills are the most common form of waste disposal. “Landfills, being relatively cheaper than other treatment/disposal alternatives, are used not only by developing but also by industrialized countries, such as US, Australia, UK and Finland (Laner et al., 2012, cited in Diamantis et al., 2013:
New mountains are forming in Hawaii, and they aren’t lush and green like the ones endemic to the islands. These are massive mounds of trash swelling in size, day by day. Landfill limits are soon to be exceeded and new grounds are being selected for additional pollution. According to an article on the Kekaha Landfill on the west side of Kauai, there is only around 10 years worth of trash life anticipated in that particular location. This means that new dumping grounds will be searched for on this small island, polluting more of Kauai. However, some of these landfills are well maintained and designed as a part of waste treatment. Weather it be solid or liquid matter that is contaminated, it will eventually make its way into the ocean or onto the
It is one thing for the information to be out there and another for people to act against this waste problem. My next and final step to this problem would be to get the local authorities’ attention such as the local mayor or governor that will pass laws that make it easier for the general public to dispose of waste. Most people do not dispose of their trash due to the inconvenience of putting in
The average resident produces seven and a half pounds of garbage every day that is buried down in landfills and litters lands costing a great amount of money. Nowadays, people face no more critical trouble than the need to save the weakening environment, mainly in urban areas, where solid wastes are uselessly dumped. It has been observed that cities have no controlled structure for garbage disposal. Each year, millions of dollars are spent picking up litter and more is thrown away in valuable materials that could be recycled. As humanity develops new technology and equipment, the level of waste increases every day. Due to the fact that there is a huge problem with garbage disposal, government representatives must contribute to resolving
My main concern about waste disposal is toward poverty. In every society, for it to work effectively the waste disposal has to be handled properly. The lack of proper waste disposal can contribute for the underdevelopment of the community. For instance, in poorer community that does not have resources to dispose of the trash properly create a series of problems. For example, when there are a lot of trashes in a community, it will prevent investors to invest in a community, the housing market, schools and stores will decline, in consequence the houses will loose its value. This will create a ripple effect because people will start immigrating toward a better place where it is much cleaner. Families will try to move to a better place where their kids can have a better future. I ask myself who wants to live in a dirty environment? I hope nobody. That’s why I believe that the government should help the poorest communities about the ways to handle waste disposal, and better educate them about recycling.
