Leadership and Strategy
There is a great importance put on business leadership, this is directly due to how a business not only functions but in how fruitful the company can become. A great leader essentially can take a business plan that is weak yet turn it into a success, whereas a poor leader stands a higher chance of ruining the best of business plans. That is why it is essential to develop effective leadership throughout a companies entire management program at all levels. How does one develop or retain strong leadership? Companies must be focused on hiring strategies that encompass very specific parameters, building from within whilst creating a strong foundation for employee development and succession planning. Leadership is essential in any organization. The style and theory embraced determines whether the company will or will not achieve their goals. in all cases theory must be embraced, as a companies theory, style, and strategy is greatly dependent on the industry the company is in (Sadler, 2014). “The behavioral theory is one of the widely used theories of management. It suggests that leaders are made and not born. It gives room for training to install leadership traits in leaders at the expense of denying them a chance. There are various leadership styles embraced by companies (Cyert, & March, 2005).” This paper takes a look at the management styles of two specific
The workforce within any organization is the engine that keeps the business moving forward. Positive leadership, as well as effective and competent following, could be the difference between success and failure for a business. Effective leadership and followers should have a symbiotic relationship, which is the most effective way a business will meet its goals. It can be seen within Jake’s Pet Land case study that there truly is a difference between leadership styles amongst different leaders. While Philip and Jan took a different approach to being a leader, Adam’s role of the follower stayed the same. Adam continued to exemplify the best characteristics possible as a follower in order to make the business as
Excellence of an organizational leadership determines how well an organization is doing. Effective leadership is influencing the behavior of individuals and groups in positive way to work towards a predefined organizational goal (Baack, 2012). An effective leader creates vision for the organization and effectively communicates with employees to set the organizational direction for growth, align the structure of the organization to meet the goals, and define organizational culture where employees can perform and grow along with the organization. Effective leaders create organizational strategies to inspire and motivate employees to achieve organizational goals and vision. There are many leadership theories evolved in organizational behavior over time. Some of the examples for leadership theories include great man theories, trait theory, behavioral theories, situational leadership, contingency theories, transactional leadership, transformational leadership and charismatic leadership.
Leadership is in many ways a responsibility, whether it’s an appointed job as a leader or a role you find yourself in unexpectedly you must perform adequately not just to accomplish the given task but to also have those following you achieve a given goal. Some are natural born leaders, taking responsibilities for self, never pointing fingers and possessing the ability to find solutions to the obstacles that arise. Others can learn how to lead and achieve the same results. In the medical field, when we look to our leaders it is so that they can lead us to be able to provide and deliver safe quality
Over the past semester there have been so many great things I have learned in this class. Since the start of my education at Southwestern Assemblies of God, I have looked forward to taking this course more than any other. I am glad I had the opportunity to take it with a knowledgeable and wise professor. Throughout my life, the concepts of management and leadership have always been intriguing. Prior to my time here at SAGU I attended a leadership school called Masters Commission USA in Lewisville, Texas. There I learned the basic principles of how to become an effective leader. Although I have had a small amount of training in the past, it has been amazing to learn under your teaching. Being an effective manager is a daunting task to say the least because of the weight it carries. I definitely feel more equipped after taking your course. The concepts I am going to discuss in this paper have been reiterated over the course of the semester and have changed the way I view management. These principles that have changed my perspective are: the idea that Jesus is the center of our success, the core of management is servant leadership, and finding the balance in being a goose, an eagle, and a turkey. These principles are the key to becoming a successful
Hello, my name is Ann-Marie Cameron. Like most of us we attend college and we do not have the luxury of choosing our course, so the reason I am taking this course is because my advisor said it was a requirement for my degree program.
The focus of this chapter is understanding theories of leadership and leadership styles. Van Wart (2008) provides a framework for discussing such theories. The framework asks: What performance goals tend to be achieved with what leader styles, under what conditions? Additionally, for each theory the following aspects are briefly discussed: what is the background of the theory and what have researches tried to explain? Which contingency factors does the theory emphasize? Which style or styles does the theory emphasize? What type of performance goals does the theory emphasize? What are the strengths and weakness of the theory or approach? (Van Wart, 2008). Throughout this chapter Van Wart (2008) identifies nine overall styles that have been recommended
Copuious research has been organized regarding leadership theories and styles. “The current leadership body of knowledge is a fragmented and “messy landscape” comprising inputs from a variety of contributors including academics, practitioners, and consultants, with numerous self-proclaimed experts and commentators thrown in for good measure.” (Latham, 2014, p.12). Contingent to this week’s assignment I will include four leadership theories, including the founder, the year the theory was introduced, and the key components of the theory. Also, I will include the Leadership Theory Taxonomy in the Apenidx area.
In the 1950’s the University of Ohio created the Model of Leadership program so corporations could measure standards, behaviors and plans used in various situations. In addition to this, Fernandez, (2008), states, the program also analyzes information from performance measurements so they can comprehend relationships between corporate supervisors and employees (P.1,).The Model of Leadership program compares corporate opportunities find the characteristics and behaviors of competent business leaders. This program uses diverse business opinions and employee performance to comprehend how these plans, behaviors and relationships influence the success and failure of organizations. Fernandez, (2008), also states, these facts influenced research on power, influence, managerial and ownership theories being used to manage corporations (P.1,). The Ohio State Model of Leadership program also enables authorities to produce competent appraisal opinions, techniques and requirements for current businesses.

When evaluating big businesses large and small, the thoughts that entertain any average person’s mind is how that business soared to the heights it is at now? Many different answers can be considered when addressing an answer to that question which could be acquisition, increase in revenues, and joint operation between two companies or even high talent retention/acquisition. When looking to address that question bit deeper we have to look more behind the scenes management leadership styles. A leader when we think about it is someone with significant authority and/or influence to invoke change and also motivate workers to produce the highest quality work output. This paper will be addressing my leader “Michael Sacco” who is President of Seafarers International Union an employer from the subsequent past. This paper will attempt to describe him by applying either one or more than one of the various types of leadership styles. Questions that will be addressed are how Mr. Sacco address diversity within the union did, was he ethical, concern about how the organization impacted the consumer, and his leader values. Other topics that will be presented are the lifecycle stage Seafarers International Union (SIU) was at the during Marcus tenure there, what did Mr. Sacco do to enhance the culture and/or destroy it during that tenure.
According to Robbins & Judge (2009), there are five key approaches to leadership. These approaches include trait theories, behavioral theories, contingency theories, the Leader-Member Exchange (LMX) Theory, and the decision theory (Robbins & Judge, 2009). The balance between management and leadership is critical. Effective organizations are defined by leaders who are able to oversee the day-to-day operations of business while envisioning the future of the organization and inspiring employees (Robbins & Judge, 2009). Leadership styles ought not to be static, but rather dynamic, conforming to the rapidly changing situations within an organization. This approach allows the manager to most effectively lead
Leadership is a form of leading individuals towards a specific goal/objective and with that comes many different theories/styles about leadership. There isn’t one perfect way to lead and Jeff Bezos, Ken Chenault and Jack Welch show that different types of leadership styles could lead to success. They have had great success throughout their careers as CEO; they were able to find what worked and led their companies to great success. While there isn’t one specific way to lead to success there are plenty of styles that could be applied to help move towards success; Coercive/Commanding, Authoritative/Visionary, Affiliative, Democratic, Coaching, and Pacesetting. “Leaders who used styles that positively affected the climate had decidedly better financial results than those who did not. That is not to say that organizational climate is the only driver of performance. Economic conditions and competitive dynamics matter enormously.” (Goleman, 2000). With that said we will compare the six styles and discuss the CEOs relation to those styles.
Effective leadership increases an organization’s ability to meet all challenges, including maintaining a competitive advantage, the need to foster ethical behavior, and the need to manage a diverse workforce fairly and equitably. Managers at all levels and in all kinds of organizations have their own personal leadership styles that determine not only how they lead their subordinates but also how they perform the other management tasks (Jones & George, 2009).
Many organizations are successful because of the formulated relationships between its leaders and followers. These organizations spend countless amounts of money on new leadership training. However, researchers have been studying and debating leadership for centuries and there is still not a concrete definition for leadership. There are influential people such as Steve Jobs, former CEO of Apple Inc., whose life as a leader gives some interesting insight into leadership retrospectively. This paper will assess Jobs’ leadership through several leadership theories.
The styles and models of this book did a great job of laying out the philosophies of leadership and how to become successful in the business world. Beginning with the aspects of leadership verse management, Simpson elaborates on the importance of being a leader and the differences that positions hold when being a manger. Furthermore, discussing the keys factors of leadership styles, such as transformational and transactional leadership, autocratic, bureaucratic,
