Leadership Reflection

I’ve learned that there is no one leader in any team. There are many different things that someone can do within a team to be a leader and show their leadership skills. To me leadership is when someone in a team passes along knowledge or skills to someone else in the team. This knowledge or skill passed along must be beneficial and must be new knowledge and a new experience for the person being led. Anyone can be a leader if given the right resources. This belief has really shown me that it is a lot easier to be a leader than I had once thought. You don’t have to be the one in charge or the one with the most power to be a leader. There is usually more than one leader in every team. It is easier to have people who are different in a team because it makes it easier for everyone to showcase their skills and show their leadership. My thought process about leadership now, is fairly different than what I had thought at the beginning of this semester. I still do believe in some of my original beliefs, but I now understand more what it is to show leadership and actually be a leader. At the beginning of the semester we answered the question, “What is leadership?” I wrote, “Being able to have others follow you in a respectable way. Guiding other to help them achieve a goal(s).” Some qualities I wrote down about a leadership were: equality, and being able to follow
Being a leader is being a role model and striving to make a positive impact on those around you. In order to be a successful leader, you have to put yourself second and your peers first. For example, my younger sister and I both play softball. I have played on several travel teams during the summer and this year, she tried out for her first competitive travel team. I was asked to aid her by helping her with the mechanics of the game. During this time, I sacrificed my time to put the needs of another person before my own and it paid off, because she made the team and I got to witness the results of my
Being a leader is more than simply holding a leadership position or having the ability to lead. Everyone is capable of being a leader, but not everyone exercises his or her leadership abilities. Each person’s idea of leadership is different. My idea of leadership has developed over time, and being a member of the President’s Leadership Class has helped me develop my philosophy of leadership further than what it was two months ago. My personal philosophy of leadership is the ability to effect change through leading by example, taking initiative, and encouraging others.
A leader should not hold all the power of leadership to themselves, but give it away to the team, because that is the only way to empower them. A good leader always take the blame, but never takes the credit, he gives that to the team. A team should be working together to achieve the goal while being united, like a family.
By definition a leader is a person who leads or commands a group however, I believe a leader should be a person who inspires his team excel in the worst of conditions. A leader should be extraordinary reliable as the team should know that the leader could guide them to the best of his abilities toward their goal. A leader should be persistent as they should be the motivational force leading the group. A leader should be patient and calm knowing that quality takes time and that the individual member of his team have obstacles to overcome on their own part.
I believe that leadership is largely a team effort rather than a one-person dictatorship. One area where I have displayed this form of leadership is on the soccer field. I have played the sport for four years now and have made lifelong connections with my fellow teammates through our intense sense of camaraderie. I know that I can depend on my teammates and they can depend on me during our games or just in the community in general because we have such a deep bond from working together to achieve a common goal. Another example of leadership is, whenever I am part of a group project, I ensure that everyone stays focused and on task and knows what exactly it is they are doing to contribute to the group. I am the one who helps others with any problems they may encounter and who checks behind everyone else’s work because I want to make sure that everything is done accordingly. My fellow classmates often come to me when they need extra help with their schoolwork or with understanding a new concept. I also demonstrate excellent academic initiative. I go out of my way to further research concepts mentioned in class when I get home so that I can have a full understanding of every topic. For example, while I was taking Spanish courses in school, I also downloaded a Spanish-learning app on my phone that I used when I got home to learn new concepts not
In class we defined leadership as using relationships to influence others. Before I came to the Academy I believed that a person could only lead their peers or subordinates. I did not believe that a subordinate could lead their superior. In high school I had many opportunities to develop my leadership with peers and subordinates. I was an officer of National Honor Society, and using that influence and my prior knowledge of NHS activities from the year before I was able to practice my leadership with my peers. I learned how to communicate in a manner to convince them to take action quickly, but not in a way that would seem overbearing or condescending. Furthermore, I was able to be a small group leader for a number of middle school retreats at my parish. In working with sixth grade boys I learned how to deal with insubordination and chaos, and with both of these groups of people I began to understand what was needed in a relationship between a leader and a follower. Our relationship had to be characterized by sincerity and respect. In both of these activities, those that I was leading could have easily stepped back and not paid attention to anything I was asking them to do. I had to convince them that I was absolutely dedicated to what I was trying to do, and that I had their best interest in mind. I feel that being a leader means having a passionate vision, and sharing it with others. Only when you get to inspire your peers, it is possible to share a common goal, you can then direct the efforts and dedication of the entire team. I am a leader on the soccer field. I know what we are all supposed to be doing and I like to give feedback and help teammates improve so we can work better to be stronger on the field. Another way I try to be a leader is at school, I try to help as many people as I can, hoping my assistance makes them feel better.
Leadership is something that comes natural for some and is a developed skill for others. If we take a look at the role of the leader, we look for certain traits in a person. For example, in grade school, there always seems to be clicks, large and small groups of people that cling together. When we examine these social sub-groups, we often find that there is always one person that leads the group. This person is usually the person that brings the group together. I remember being in social circles with people that I knew I would never be friends with. However, we may have one or two people in common, thus we remain friends. Overtime, we
Leadership is something that people are born with. It is an inherent charm and it doesn’t hide even if you want to hide it. There is a leader amongst us and he or she is the one that leads other people to great things by inspiring and motivating people to do good deeds. Leadership has been described as “a process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task”. This way a leader can decide what work goes in and goes out. Good leaders in history have left a mark in walks of life. But great leaders, they’re different. According to Webster’s Dictionary, leadership is the power or ability to lead other people, the act or instance of leading. I believe that Leadership is an art, the art to get others to follow and accomplish a common goal or task in a harmonic manner. A leader can be shown in all kinds of shapes and forms. To be a great leader many people believe it consists of modeling the way, inspiring a shared vision, enabling others to act, and encouraging the heart. Over the course of me learning how to become a better leader and being in leadership roles, I’ve learned that all these are very necessary to be a great leader.
Being a leader is about giving other people confidence and helping them achieve their goals, and being ok with learning from others. A leader should not always be in authority or managing others, a leader works with their group and uses people's strengths to accomplish the goal. A leader must also learn to effectively lead their group and use everyone’s strengths, but also build up their weakness.
My idea of leadership is being able to inspire others, motivate, set a vision, communicate, respect others, and of course, lead by example. A leader must have an honest understanding of who they are, what they know, and what they are capable of. To be a successful leader, you have to be able to convince your followers, not just yourself or your superiors, that you are worthy of being followed. In my opinion, this can build confidence in their followers to have faith in you, in order to be able to lead. I strongly believe that good leaders are made rather, and not born. Leadership is something that we are all born with because we are all born. Therefore, who is a leader and who is not depends on who really wants to be a leader and who does not. Leadership is a skill and so it can be learned. As anything that is learned it demands practice and practice to be the best. It would not be something that will happen in a matter of a day. There are multiple elements that make a leader. Collaboration is a key element for successful teamwork. Therefore, a leader must always be in the look for ways to foster collaboration. Creating trust within the team, support face-to-face collaboration, transfer responsibilities when making decisions, and ultimately teach other how to be leaders. All of this is not done if it is not done from the bottom of your own heart.
Being able to lead a group or someone is a very powerful action. Being a leader in general is very powerful. Leadership is an art that is painted, sculpted, and displayed in all sorts of ways. There are many different styles of leadership that correspond with different tasks. From transformational leadership to laissez-faire leadership, there are various styles throughout the continuum. A transformational leader is one of the best, more successful leadership style. When going down the continuum, the leadership styles only become less effective. Everyone also falls in distinctive categories when it comes to leading others. The leadership style that is displayed depends on the person leading and those who are being led along with the task.
Due to my passive nature, I’ve always avoided leadership roles. With that being said I still aspire to be someone who can be looked to as a leader. In order to reach that goal I observe and try to mimic the actions of people that inspire me. There have been many people I’ve taken orders from, but I have “followed” few. Those are the ones I consider to be true leaders, and have tried to be like myself.
