The writing life is the short story book which has seven chapters. It talks about how to become a good writer and how to create a good writing by passing through the perspective and personal experience of Annie Dillard. In the part of how to become a good writer, she tells her personal experience about what is the things that help she to become a good writer. Also, what is the things a writer should have and what is a person a writer should be. In the part of how to create the good writing, she compares the writing with other handicrafts such as painting, photographing, singing, and wood working (Dillard 3-6). In addition, she gives us about the idea of “Line of Words” that is the major part of creating a good writing.

Animals help humans in our lives for sharing their features. Every new experience can make a person change; sometimes the changes are positive, and other times it is negative. Either way, here is no avoiding change. Animals are kind, helpful, and playful.

The major element of this book is the obstacles that teen age mothers have to deal with. In most teen pregnancies the couple very rarely stays together. They are just kids themselves and are scared; the guy thinks if he is not with her anymore, the problem will be gone. This leaves a young lady all alone to deal with their problem on her own. On September 25, 1897, William Cuthbert Faulkner was born in New Albany, Mississippi. He stands as one of the most preeminent American writers of the twentieth century. His literary reputation included poetry, novels, short stories, and screenplays. Faulkner won two Pulitzer Prizes for Fiction and the Nobel Prize in Literature. “A Rose for Emily” is a short fascinating story written by William Faulkner and it was his first short story published in a national magazine. The story involved an old woman named Emily Grierson, the daughter of a rich man that was considered a hero in the town where they lived. The story takes place in the fictional Town of Jefferson, Mississippi during and after the civil war between the Northerners and Southerners. Emily’s childhood was never easy; her father was always overprotective with her even when she was a grown woman. Charmaine Mosby an English Professor of Western Kentucky University in his work analysis of “A Rose for Emily” writes, “Miss Emily Grierson had been cut off from most social contact and all courtship by her father.” This was the principal reason why Emily Grierson was always a lonely soul.

The Revolution released the potential for America to become very democratic; allowing space for political and social struggles to spread ideas of freedom and challenge the old way of doing things. Ideas of liberty invigorated attacks on both British and domestic American foundations and so did the beliefs of equality in the Declaration of Independence, which caused many in society who were seen as the substandard bunch such as women, slaves and free blacks to question the sanction of their superiors.

Have you ever had that feeling of wanting to free yourself from something, breaking the wall that holds you back, cutting the string that won’t let you go on and be free? Emily Bronte in her poem “The Caged Bird” and “Sympathy” by Paul Dunbar portray their feelings in their lyric poems. Bronte was born in 1818 in Yorkshire, England. She lived during the end of the romantic period, which made a huge impact on her writings. Romanticism was “an artistic and intellectual movement originating in Europe in the late 1700s and characterized by a heightened interest in nature, emphasis on the individual 's expression of emotion and imagination…”

Cassie Logan showed bravery by standing up for her brother, Little man in the classroom. Cassie has so much courage that she stands up for little man to her teacher. On page 26 Cassie states “See, Miz Crocker, see what it says. They give us these ole books when they don’t want ‘em no more.” This quote shows Cassie standing up for little man by showing her what little man was talking about. I like how in the book she stands up for her brother even though she gets in trouble.

Strangers in the Land of Paradise by Lillian S. Williams explores the settlement of African Americans in Buffalo in the time of the Great Migration. In this book, Williams discusses the process in which migrants from the South made their own black communities in Buffalo while bringing their beliefs and traditions with them, and having those beliefs evolve over time in a new setting. Her work sheds light on the experiences of blacks in Buffalo during a time where many changes were occurring; the Civil War had just ended and the Industrial Revolution was underway. She also speaks on how Buffalo was unique in that it became the final point for those escaping the racism and violence in the South, since it was the last point before crossing into Canada. In her own words, “the book examines the growth and development of Buffalo, the movement of European immigrants and African American migrants into the city, and their ability to secure an economic foothold. It tests the extent to which family and friendship networks for blacks were a significant force in their migration and acculturation. It also describes the establishment of institutions that African Americans created to shape their modern, urban community" (p. xiv).

Cassie Logan is a black, nine year old girl living in rural Mississippi. Throughout her life Cassie displays many different qualities, she can be feisty, sassy, and clever, but most of all she is courageous. This does not just mean she is plucky or tenacious, it means she is “brave and/or fearless” (Merriam Webster Dictionary). Whenever she shows this quality, she stands up for herself, as well as others. Being courageous is so important simply because she is a black girl living in 1933. Racism was very common at that time, and standing up for yourself was the only way you would get respect. However, in some incidents described in the book, Cassie changed her life for the better and took one step closer towards a fairer world. There are three

Standing up for what you believe in isn’t always easy, but if you have the courage, you can do anything you put your mind to. Throughout the book, “Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry”, by Mildred D. Taylor, I feel that Cassie Logan showed the most courage. Even though she didn’t quite understand why her family was treated the way they were, she knew it wasn’t right. She showed courage when she stood up to Mr. Barnett, when she stood up to Miz Crocker because the “new books” were dirty, and also when she had to stand up to Lillian Jean. For a girl Cassie’s age, she had a deep respect for not only herself, but also the others around her.

When I was a teenager during the 1970s, the younger sister of a friend of mine died from injuries she sustained when she was hit by a car. Shortly after the accident, the girl’s dad happened to drive past the area where the accident had occurred. As he drove by, he couldn’t see what was going on because there were emergency vehicles that were blocking his view. He said a prayer for anyone who might have been injured in the accident and drove home. He learned later that the person he had prayed for was his daughter.

In William Faulkner’s short story, “A Rose For Emily”, there are a few themes and symbols that are the most significant. The main character, Emily Grierson, is used to display the struggle against change while trying to keep old traditions alive. Emily’s house is a perfect symbol of old traditions. The theme of death is also displayed, as death seems to just follow Emily throughout her life. At the end of the short story, something as simple as a piece of long, gray hair becomes a huge symbol of the story, answering many questions for the community and, of course, the readers.

The Solitude of Self is a speech that was given by Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who was a leader of the women’s suffrage movement. This speech mainly discussed gender equality in every situation, including education and suffrage. Stanton clearly was opposed to the idea of inequality and believed that every person, man or woman, deserved to have the same rights.

Circle of Stones Woman’s Journey to Herself is basically a guide for women to find their true selves using the ancient archetypal feminine manifest form. There are a group of women that are being very detailed about the journeys, dreams, and visions they experienced in their lives. They are being very open and telling the truth so the author was able to use all their stories to create a feminine space so we can relate and look at our lives through the women’s ancient culture and rituals. It takes you on a journey a meditative experience of the lost feminine so by the end of the book you can be awaken and be able to help other women.
