Everyone has that one experience that makes them look at life with a new set of eyes. My life changing experience happened a little earlier than most. It was the summer before first grade. We had gotten an exceptional amount of rain in the past months even though it was summer. I did not notice, though, because summer was every six year old's favorite holiday, next to Christmas and their birthday. My summer was supposed to be like any other but it quickly took a turn. For the best or for the worst? That is debatable.
June 8th, 2008 was the day my whole life turned upside down. It was a hot and humid Sunday afternoon. My blond, curly headed six year old self was taking a nap on the couch in our living room with a huge window that looked out over our front yard. I used to love to stand at that window during the summer and look at the bustling neighborhood. My mom and little sister were taking a walk around the neighborhood, while my dad was in our garage tinkering with something.
Around three o’clock, my mom and sister came running into the house through the front door. This may sound normal but my family always came in through the garage, unless we were in a hurry. My mom woke me up while my sister repeated something that I could not decipher. It took a couple minutes for my brain to register what she had said.
She kept repeating, “There’s water in the street.”
My initial thought was that it was raining. My younger self could not grasp the concept of raging waters flowing down a suburban street. So, I jumped off the couch and ran to the giant window in our living room. I peeked through the blinds. From what I could see the neighborhood was completely normal. Then I saw it.
Several people from the neighborhood were standing outside on their freshly cut lawns, yelling to each other.
My dad heard all of the ruckus so he came in and asked, “What’s going on? What’s all that outside?”
So, my mom turned on the tv to the news channel and sat down on the couch. One of the reporters was standing somewhere that I recognized as the place I had lived in my whole life. Why would they need to come to Columbus? Nothing ever happens in Columbus. I wondered.
I asked my mom, “What’s going on? Why are those people here?”
An experience that really changed my life was when my grandfather was on the verge of death in the hospital. I remember seeing my family crying and my heart ached. I visited him every day and came home to study for my exams. I would sleep late every night to study and cry. In that moment, I realized how precious life was and how much of an impact we as individuals have other people. Ever since, I have tried to enjoy every single moment of life, whether a simple walk to school or spending time with my family.
I've experienced a lot of events which had great impact on me since I was young. Thinking of life changing events, the one I would like to share is when I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. It was a very devastating day for me. A day that changed my life. I never thought Id get through but today I can say that Diabetes has changed me for the better.
It was a small town in Cornersville, Ohio. Nothing much ever happened in this small town until one day. A new family moved in one afternoon. Everyone was surprised because no one even noticed the house being built. Everyone was still delighted that they moved in because the couple, Bob and Nancy, were very friendly. Bob and Nancy helped with all the activities in town and were very generous. A couple of weeks after they moved in, a lot of strange things began. Money started disappearing, the lights in the town went out every night except for Bob and Nancy's lights, even people's pets went missing. One night, everyone's lights went out at 11:30 as usual, except there was an extremely loud noise. The neighbors went outside to see where all the
A experience that forever changed my life and outlook on life happened last summer. Last summer I went to Colombia for a week. The trip included myself along with eleven others. While I was there, I helped out in a church, a boys farm, and a youth retreat.
I had an experience that changed my life completely in just in a blink of an eye. Even though 19 is still a young age, it should never happen to anyone. I stop to think every day about that day and what had happened to me was a tragedy. Ever since then, I’ve seen how much I have changed and because of that I cherish life
When we got inside it felt like a party was at our house because there was so many people. Our neighbors, cousins, uncles, aunts, and friends were all at our house helping my family, even my swim teacher was there. For a couple seconds I thought Are we having swim lessons because there is enough water to do it pretty much anywhere. As I started walking down the stairs I stopped! I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. My basement was filled with what it looked like one foot over water! How could this be possible, the sump pumps should be working.
One day, after school on May 31st, my mom and dad sat my sister and I down in the living room. At first I thought “ what's going on, who passed away, did something bad happened, what'd I do wrong” not until my Mom finally said, “Girls, we’re taking a trip to West Palm Beach Florida this week.”
An incident that changes the direction of my life was, when I broke my foot. As a young kid I loved playing sports and do aggressive activities. One day playing soccer someone who was bit stronger than I was, kicked my foot which caused the bones to break. I fell to the floor not knowing what just happened. All I remember is that some EMT’s come to the rescue and took me to the hospital. I was so glade and appreciative with the EMT’s that took care of me. As a result I told myself I will do everything that I can to help out the community just liked I was helped instead of worrying about myself and not others. I started volunteering with the fire department and received all the certifications required in order to start helping those in need.
When I was 16 years old my life changed completely. I was diagnosed with Endometriosis a Since I was 11 years I have been suffering from a disease I didn't even know it existed. chronic disease. This impact my life in a drastic way. Due to this diagnosed I fell in depression. But overall I learned a lesson from this big change in my life. I learned that sometimes it takes bad things that happens to you to become a better person. I learned to value my family because now I know they are indispensable. I learned how to valued my family because now I know they are indispensable.
Every person on this planet has at some point experienced an event they would deem life changing. For me, that occasion was my own birth. From the second I popped out, or rather was extracted and then placed within this world, my life has been undoubtedly forever changed. That special day taught me quite a bit about life, like how to breathe and pump blood through my veins. Of course, I couldn't have made it through birth without the support of my loving parents.
My final, but most important, life changing experience occurred in 2008. This was the year that I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). As a teen many circumstances forced me to live on my own at the age of 16, yet I managed to graduate from high school and find a job working with the mentally disabled. At 18 years old, I got my own apartment and had took on the responsibility of caring for my two younger brothers, whom I provided both emotional and financial support to. I had to provide housing and try my hardest to teach them responsibility although I was learning myself. This caused me to have to take on more hours at work and play a major role I was much unprepared for. Throughout life I have been so focused on providing and supporting others that I forgot to properly care for myself. I ignored all the symptoms of my disease for years until my body finally gave up and I had to be hospitalized. Though this may seem like a detrimental period of my
Watching the water-cyclone was hypnotic. It was nearly on top of us when lightning flashed so brightly that it printed everything on my eyes in negative for thirty seconds afterward. The telephone gave out a startled ting!
So allow me to be honest here, my life changed not a bit throughout my childhood. I grew up with a single mother of two children, most of the time. My father was an addict, and if he wasn’t strung out and abusive towards my mother, he was in jail or in a program. That continued for the extent of my childhood, and not a thing changed for me that reminds me now of a life changing situation. However, what I will say is that those many years of trials and tribulations definitely lead to the single most life changing experience of my teenage life. It wasn’t until the days of high school when I thought I was invincible that my life came crashing down at an instance with no hope of having another chance and the stark realization that I may become what everyone said I would become during my childhood, and that’s nothing. Soon though, I was able to show I was capable of succeeding and did not give up on myself because that single mother of two never gave up on me.
In my lifetime there have been many breathtaking and wonderful experience’s I have had the pleasure in being a part of, only one experience comes to mind when I think about a personal experience that’s dear to me. The experience that is most dear to me would one that changed my view on life and the path I was pathed for myself along the way.
Have you ever had an experience that changed your life? For better or worse? Well I have and little did I know at the time that it was going to change my life forever.
