Literacy is about more than reading and writing - it is about how we communicate in society. It is about social practices and relationships, about knowledge, language and culture. Being literate is a key aspect in life, hence why throughout student’s lives, reading is so important and so valued. A variety of famous literature are part of history, and many other famous novels take place in historic time periods, such as the Ancient Greek Era, The Great War, and The Great Depression. One truly known example of a masterpiece in literature is the novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee. To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel of great sweetness, humour, compassion, and of mystery carefully sustained. The novel provides several literary devices, such as motifs, themes and symbols that help make a broader impact and understanding to the reader. To Kill a Mockingbird also, takes place in a poverty-spread time period, known as the Depression, and includes many powerful and symbolic messages that add onto the different ways the story can be considered educational, and why it should be in the grade ten english curriculum. In the book “To Kill a Mockingbird”, one of the main characters “Scout Finch” describes the setting in the introduction of the story. The setting is the town of Maycomb County. In Scout’s description of the town, she emphasizes the slow, old-fashioned pace and values of the town. In the novels introductory, Scout Finch quotes “it was a time of vague optimism for some of the people: Maycomb County had been told it had nothing to fear but itself.” (Page 6).
