Longer School Day Argumentative Essay

As a student at Granite Ridge Intermediate, I am naturally not a fan of school (no offence to Granite Ridge). I would probably be even less of a fan of school if the school days were longer because it is such a bad idea. Some schools in the U.S have already extended their school days. The people who did this believe that extending the school day is actually going to have a positive impact on the students and teachers. I’m here to give you three reasons why these people made a horrible mistake. The problem is not that the school day isn’t long enough for teachers to get their message across, it’s that the teachers aren’t doing their job most of the time, there is no correlation between longer school days and better test scores, and finally, it costs way too much to extend school days. …show more content…

According to the article, “The School Day”, by April Sanders, “One study by Philadelphia Public Schools showed that students are on task for only one third of the school day.” I don’t know about you, but to me, this is unacceptable. If you're a teacher, your job is to teach your students. It is also the teacher’s job to make sure that the students are on task while at school. Teachers don’t need more time, they need to actually do their jobs.

There is no direct correlation between longer school hours and better testing scores. According to source #4, “ The Chicago Tribune reported that there are no studies showing that longer school days help students do better in school.” Now, my question is, what is the point of making the school day longer if it doesn’t do anything? If extending the school day has no effect on the student's’ academics, then it is undoubtedly a waste of the student’s time and the government's money. This brings me to my third and final
