CHAPTER 1 Introduction This chapter consists of the Background of the Study, Statement of the Problem, Significance of the Study and Scope and Delimitations of the Study. Background of the Study Cosmetics are used for beautification. Cosmetics are substances used to enhance the appearance or odor of human body. Many cosmetic ingredients are selected from nature itself, that is, they are taken from something found in our environment. They are known as organic substances. Organic substances are or have been a part of a life process, hence they contain carbon they may be produced from living matter such as vegetable oils or can be extracted from matter that has lived such as paraffin or petrolatum. Consumption of natural vegetables and fruits rich in flavonoids help to protect from lung and oral cavity cancers. 6. Fresh pods are good source of folates; provide about 22% of RDA per 100g. Consumption of foods rich in folates, especially during pre-conception period helps decsrease the incidence of neural tube defects in the offspring. 7. The pods are also good source of many important minerals such as iron, calcium, manganese and magnesium. 8. The pods are also an excellent source of anti-oxidant vitamin, vitamin C; provides about 36% of daily recommended levels. Consumption of foods rich in vitamin-C helps body develop immunity against infectious agents, reduce episodes of cold and cough and protects body from harmful free radicals. 9. The pods are also good source of many important minerals such as iron, calcium, manganese and magnesium. Statement of the Problem This study aims to determine the acceptability of Okra pods as body lotion. Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions: 1. What is the level of acceptability of Okra pods as body lotion in terms of the following criteria: a. Color b. Odor c. Appearance d. Texture e. State/form 2. How effective is the okra pods as body lotion based on the production of the respondents? Highly Accepted, Accepted, Moderately Accepted, Little Accepted, Not Accepted.
