Depression is a sign of a weakness that can be wished away. People with a depressive disorder cannot just “pull themselves together” and expect to get better. Depression has great impacts on people’s lives, to some it is just a word, but to others it is a life ruiner. Clinical depression include: Major depression, psychotic depression, seasonal affective depression, and bipolar depression. Most people who experience this illness need treatment to get better, however; it does not always work most people start to feel anxious or depressed from losing a loved one, divorce, getting fired, and other difficult situations. A major depressive disorder is a condition characterized by one or more major depressive episodes without a history of manic, mixed, or hypomanic episodes. These major depressive episodes are not due to medical condition, medication, abused substance, or psychosis. The constant feeling of sadness or the loss of interest that characterizes can lead to physical and emotional conditions. The foundation of treatment is talk therapy with a trained psychologist. Major depression is a mental health condition. It is also known as clinical or unipolar depression. The exact cause of major is unknown. Although almost two-thirds of individuals with major depressive disorder respond to current therapies; at least one-third of those entering remission relapse back into depression 18 months posttreatment. Completed suicide occurs in up to 15% individuals with severe Major Depressive Disorder. Individuals with this disorder have more pain and physical illness and decreased physical, social, and role functioning. It is believed to be problems with a person’s genes, changes in the brain, or a mixture of both. In some cases it tends to run in families but can also occur in families with no history of the
Major depressive disorder, we all have probably heard of it, but do we really know what is it is ? Major depressive disorder is “a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest… major depressive disorder or clinical depression, affects how you feel, think and behave and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems”(Mayo Clinic Staff). Having this disorder puts you in a very unstable position because you are constantly feeling depressed so it affects the way you think and feel and that can be very dangerous. Sometimes this happens to a person for one day, but put yourself in the shoes of someone who experiencing this for more than two weeks? When you have major depressive disorder, the signs of depression disorder can last for two weeks or more(myers646). This dis order must be treated immediately because “depression may make you feel as if life isn 't worth living”(Mayo Clinic Staff). Feeling this way can lead you to doing things that you can not take back such as committing suicide and sadly that can happen when you have major depressive disorder. Kiyohara and Yoshimasu conducted a research that showed that 90% of suicides have were dealing with major depressive disorder(qtd. in The World Health Organization). Throughout this paper I will be discussing the causes, symptoms and treatment when dealing with major depressive disorder.

For their eating habits, there have been records of MDD linked to anorexia and bulimia in adults ranging between 20%-80% in a lifetime (Fernandez-Aranda, 2007). You may have trouble doing normal day-to-day activities, and sometimes you may feel as if life isn't worth living, (Mayo). Depression is not like a general illness and it is not something you can just go purchase and over the counter medicine for. Physicians have yet to find any causes of depression. A depressive disorder is an illness that involves the body, mood, and thoughts. It interferes with daily life, normal functioning, and causes pain for both the person with the disorder and those who care about him or her.
As a disorder that is predicted to affect 9.5% of the US adult population in any given year, Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a mental illness that can last for long periods of time if left untreated (National Institute of Mental Health, n.d.). The symptoms associated with MDD vary from person to person, but the most common include a depressed mood, lack of energy, feelings of hopelessness, pessimism, irritability or guilt, fatigue, lack of interest in hobbies and activities that used to be pleasurable, weight fluctuations, suicidal thoughts, and having trouble focusing and making decisions (National Institute of Mental Health).

Major depression disorder (MDD) is a common mental disorder in the United States and a leading cause of disability throughout the world. The disorder can affect anyone at any time and any age. The onset of MDD is often due to, low self-esteem and self-worth, a chemical imbalance or a stressful event in one’s life.
