Introduction
Managing diversity and equality effectively in the workplace is the core responsibility of any organization in the contemporary business world. Shen, Chanda, D’Netto and Monga (2009) conducted a survey whose results revealed the massive diversity within the British society in terms of ethnicity, nationality and religion. As a result, the Equality Act of 2010 was formulated and became law whose provisions focus on legal protection against discrimination based on gender re-assignment, marriage, civil partnership, age, disability, sexual orientation, religion, pregnancy and maternity, sex and beliefs (Monks, 2007). Therefore, managing diversity in the workplace is critical towards the achievement of equality and discrimination free working environment. Bhatia (2008) observed that the ability to understand, accept, value, acknowledge and celebrate differences among people with respect to race, sexual orientation, religion, age, ethnicity and mental ability within an organization is crucial in eliminating discrimination. Discrimination refers to the tendency of denying equal treatment to people believed to be members of the same social group (Ozbilgin, 2009). In other words, discrimination in the work place is related to denial of equal treatment in terms of promotion, compensation, career development, training and empowerment. Therefore, managing diversity in the work place is crucial towards the achievement of a discrimination free working environment and the
I am very happy witht the progress that Vicky has made in her job so far. She has been with the Bureau about 8 months and she has become invaluable to us. She understands the division and bureau vision and direction. She is a real team player who actively participates in bureau meetings and activities such as coming up with a vision and mission statement for the PPI bureau.
Diversity is simply the different people of opposite races in one place. Diversity has much a positive impact on a group because it improves the quality of goods made by one company, and it opens your eyes on how others of a different ethnicity act in their surroundings.
Diversity has impacts everywhere and has impacted and changed Certified Public Accountants (CPA’s)? CPA’s are accountant that are certified through a national organization. They maintain that all financial statements to be completely accurate. When you take history into account it was always just the white men that could do anything that required higher education. This was also true for CPA’s at one time, of course this is not the case in the 21st century. Every company has a diversity statement, even Western Michigan University has one. These Diversity statements stat that the company does not take offense to or illegally discriminate agent’s people that fall into different categories. Some of the categories that I will be discussing are sex,
Former President Lyndon B. Johnson once said, “Yesterday is not ours to recover, but tomorrow is ours to win or lose.” This quote in itself explains my reasons for wanting to become a social worker, which is so that so that I can use my past experiences and work towards the future, so that no child feels forgotten. Also, this quote explains my goals, which are to either be a school or military social worker when I graduate. As well as, this quote explains my perspectives on different conversational topics. This paper, will explain how the reality of my life led me to want to pursue social work, my dreams after graduating and my thoughts on various subject matters.
I have had the opportunity to experience working with different teams. I currently work with a group of lab analyst at EMSL Analytical. In the past, I have worked with other members on executive boards for different organizations . I like working in teams, and I believe that in order to become a productive team member you have to be able to communicate effectively. As well as, having the ability to understand multiple viewpoints of those on your team. When working with others, I believe that I can bring certain aspects to the table. I tend to be more outgoing. Which enables me to talk to others, and understand what they need so that I can help in any way possible. I am very dependable, and when I am given a task I want to see it through to
Growing up as a child, I was always fearful of what other thought and considered of me. This fear brought forth self-esteem difficulties throughout my school as well as I entered college. Unfortunately, my fears restricted me from forming friendships, and even to the point of preventing me from developing as an employee. This fear that crippled me from within was the main source of what caused me to holdback in life rather than exposing to the world the true individual I actually was.
America’s workforce is below average. Well, it does sound like a crazy statement but America’s job market is more gilded than we thought. With over 5.6 million job openings reported by both the Bureau of Labor Statistics and CNN.com, it has no signs of stopping. This is due to the persistent component that hasn’t been addressed, which, you guessed it, is our unskilled workers. Also known as the skills gap issue, many employers find it difficult to obtain enough workers that are qualified for their vacancies and leads to them losing potential profits. As a high school student, the American institutional instruction are no longer enough to prepare our young prospects, like myself, for future in-demand jobs. It’s adamant that American education
In today work force and the different diversity groups you work with you have to be able to try and understand you have to change the way things are managed so that you do not offend anyone from a different culture. Just recently my manager walked by my desk and said what is that smell, well I have a new neighbor that was stinking pretty badly. My neighbor is from a different culture then the rest of us and does not shower every day and does not wear deodorant and on the hot days you can smell him. It went on for a month and then he took it upon himself to go to the person’s manager and told him he needed to do something about it because it’s getting worse. I don’t believe that was the best idea but I can’t stop my manager from doing anything.
Silicon Valley is the home to many of the world’s largest high-tech corporations. Silicon Valley companies employee a plethora of talent-rich workers who lead the way in 21st century, and beyond, technological advances. Google is one of the crown jewels of Silicon Valley and like many successful companies, such as Xerox or Velcro; the name has morphed into a verb become synonymous with an activity. “Google this” is the expression that is used to indicate using any internet search engine for results. Although Google is successful in its unique approach to employee development, the company admittedly falls short when it comes to diversity. With businesses recognizing that workplace diversity can positively effect corporate profits, Google
Now I am going to address three aspects, which are related to why organizations should pay attention to equality and diversity. The first one is social justice case. It is based on treated fairly in the workplace and more specific meaning is each employee should have same pay, equal opportunities to improving themselves and same training. These also related to harassment, bullying and discrimination (Law Advisers, 2016). Everyone is same so individuals should protect own right. If employees are treated inequality, they should stand up and defend themselves’ right. In the workplaces, there might exist direct or indirect discrimination and the common discrimination is race discrimination. From the statistics of Law Advisers (2016), white people are 2.5
Diversity has been one of the top issues in today’s organization or establishment. At the workplace diversity means creating an environment that all employees feel included. It doesn’t matter of their gender, age, race, work experience, or sexual orientation. The Workplace should acknowledge and recognize other races and other cultures and recognize the fact there are many ways of viewing the world. Workplace diversity is what others bring into the actual workplace if you notice it brings different opinions and interaction from different backgrounds into the workplace. It opens up others points of perceptions on how things are viewed.
As a new employee, it is important to know and understand the work culture and environment that you have become employed in. I think that most of the time you mustobserve and feel out other employees about is acceptable or not acceptable. As a new employee you are not only being reviewed and monitored by your work performance but by how you dress, communicate and fit in with your co-workers. Try to learn the work culture expectations and job responsibilitiesby asking your manager or an experienced professional co-worker for help. Asking questions for clarification is better than just assuming and making an error that could impact and looking badly on your job performance or employment with your office. I think you need to be yourself but
Diversity in the workplace is important because it increases creativity, encourages personal growth and encourages independence. IT companies should embrace diversity because it results in smarter, higher performing employees and teams. Failure to attract top talent will result in IT companies missing out on great candidates. Here are three companies that are leading the way with diversity and inclusion.
Surface level diversity is the mixture of people who differentiate by sex, race or ethnicity, and the observably physically disabled. These differences typically cannot be changed and are easy to measure because they are visual. Deep level diversity are differences such as personality and attitudes that can be communicated through verbal and nonverbal behaviors. Diversity can be affiliated with socio-economic factors such as education, profession, job function, and social class. These three components of diversity affect how individuals operate in the workplace. Diversity can channel a sense of competitiveness, which has pros and cons. The
