Fear is a very powerful thing. It can be used to manipulate, or in other words shape the identities of others. Someone who used this ability to his advantage was Marshall Herf Applewhite.Marshall Herf Applewhite utilized fear to shape the identities of his followers by forcing belief under false pretences, forcing a way of life, and forcing suicide. Marshall Applewhite was constantly trying to get people to follow him by telling lies. For example, when Applewhite founded the Heavens Gate cult he and his “sexless partner” convinced a group of people that he was the son of God returning for a second time. If they believed he was Christ then they could use their religious fear of God against them. Applewhite then used their new belief that he was the Christ to convince them of the “fact” that a spaceship would come;then they would shed their human bodies and move on to a higher level. Later on when the promised spaceship never arrived the amount of Applewhite’s follower’s. He then continued to prey on people’s fear through lies. He told them that in the Hale-Bop comet a spaceship was hidden and if they did not prepare to leave in this hidden space ship they would be destroyed with the rest of …show more content…
It was not an option. Applewhite and his “Partner” Bonnie lu Nettles came up with many of the rules set for the heavens gate member’s. For example you had to have the same clothes, haircut, and food as everyone else. Another change was that sexual activity was strictly forbidden. Applewhite also convinced 20 people to abandon their family and belongings and move from Oregon to eastern Colorado. All of these people did these things out of fear because they thought that Applewhite was telling the truth. They believed the if they did not listen to Applewhite, they would miss their ticket to heaven and be destroyed with the Earth. So by using their fear of missing their chance he changed their way of
Fear is a common human emotion, but the way some people react is different than others. Although, it is harder on some humans unlike other people. Ralph Waldo Emerson once said,” Fear defeats more people than any other one thing in the world.” I think that means that fear harms more people than anything else does in the whole world. Also that people can scare themselves way easier than normal and it’s not healthy.
Fear can motivate you to do something or stop you. One way is when doing something you know someone will do it. Why do people treat people different based off your tragedy Based off the movie Cool Hand Luke’s mom died, his partners gave him respect by leaving the room and the one of boss workers locked Luke in the box to grieve. People just don’t know how to react But we shouldn’t let fear stop us. Like going back to Antigone when Ismene burried her family relative she really didnt know what to do and she just did what was suppose to be done, what her mind told her to.
Have you ever been intimidated by fear? Fear is in our everyday lives. We tend to let fear control us and how we live our lives. For example, The Salem Witch Trials, which caused over hundreds of people to lose their lives just because they were accused of being witches, along with the Nazi Party and Hitler, who had control over millions of people and killed thousands because they were jewish.
On the night of May 28, 1971, Donald Marshall Jr.’s life would change completely. The obstacles that Mr. Marshall will have to face will be life changing experience and a huge eye opener to the rest of the world. Donald Marshall Jr. served 11 years of his time for a crime he did not commit.
Who is Marshall Applewhite? Applewhite was an American cult leader who founded what became known as heaven's gate religious group and organized his mass suicide in 1997. In 1972, applewhite met a woman who's name was Bonnie Lu Nettles, later they would decide that they were “the two” mentioned in the book of revelation, and they were on special spiritual mission.
One thing I learned about fear is that it can basically act for us. With fear humans can make critical decisions that they wouldn’t dare make without fear edging them on. A story that particularly shocked me was the story of a young woman named Kelly. She followed her
Fear is an unshakable feeling that is driven by both rational, and irrational causes, but in the heat of the moment differentiating the rational, from the irrational can be nearly impossible. When control is given into the hands of fear, no matter how pure or genuine the intention, the outcome will be horrific. The Crusades and The Salem Witch Trials are two historical events that started with the idea of holy purification, but because of the corruption of man both events turned into hellish conquests, that resulted in hysteria, and murder. But it all begins with one individual convincing the others that what they are doing is right, true and pure.
Two of the last Heaven’s Gate followers “Telah” and “we” keep the Heaven’s Gate website online and promptly respond to any questions through email. March 23, 1997 was when the mass suicide known as Heaven’s Gate occurred in Rancho Santa Fe community of San Diego, California. Thirty-nine members were found dead neatly in bunk beds wearing Nike shoes, black sweat pants, and covered with a purple cloth. The cult started in 1997, when founders Marshall Applewhite, and Bonnie Nettles became “the Two” and gain followers. As the son of a Pastor, Applewhite always saw himself as a preacher, but never fit into mainstream religion due to his alleged homosexual tendencies. Furthermore, the development of Human Individual Metamorphosis (HIM), a New Age religion in which members believed the planet earth would be recycled in order to move to “next level” or heaven, humans give up all attachments to the
Heaven’s Gate Heaven’s Gate was an apocalyptic cult that believed that their only way to be savoured was to commit mass suicide. The group was formed in the early 1970’s and ended on the 26th of March 1997. It was believed that the group were trying to leave earth by boarding an alien ship (ufo) that was following the comet Hale- Bopp because the earth was going to be “wiped clean, renewed, refurbished, and rejuvenated” (recycled). They committed suicide because they believed that their body was the vehicle to this “spaceship” which would lead them to another world/life.
Through that, fear is also able to hurt people around them and make them more greedy and selfish. Fear can create chaos and mass destruction.
What does fear do to people? Fear causes people to act irrationally because they assume the worst about the people they encounter either in public or in private. People are judged every day for the way they appear. The people around you are constantly judging you, and sometimes they may be intimidated because of how you look or dress, like in the Christmas carolers article where the people getting pranked were scared because of the way the carolers looked or in The Off Season when Parkhill killed a Martian because he didn’t understand what their intentions were on Mars. Due to people’s fears of what could happen with the people they encounter, they become the stereotypers not the people being stereotyped.
First to tell, fear could lead people to behave negatively and make their lives in struggles. Actually, Okonkwo shows
Before you truly understand fear, you need to know exactly what it entails and how to overcome the intricate web of lies.
Those people who were deemed not suitable were discarded. By culling his congregation in this manner Jim Jones was able to build a team, which would fulfill his goal of a socialist utopian society. Unhappy with the racial climate of the 1960s in Indianna, Jim Jones moved his congregation to California (Ryan, 2011) in order to further unify the church. By fostering an inclusive environment (USAF) he was able to create value for the church members. Once the church was moved, Jim Jones began to develop the next phase of his plan.
Fear is both helpful and harmful, depending on how one views it. Fear is helpful because it helps you survive. It teaches people to become more cautious with the environment around them. While fear is helpful, it can also be very harmful; fear can lead to paranoia, which may cause one’s brain to do something regretful. Having fun is one essential of life, which a person can’t have when their mind is always afraid and obsessing over a substance. The Pit and the Pendulum is about a man who uses hope and logic when he is strapped down. The narrator in Tell-Tale Heart is unusually scared of the old man’s eye. He eventually kills the old man, along with the eye; thus, letting his obsession brainwash him. The Masque of Red Death deals with a man
