Medicine Summer Program Application Essay

I’m writing this letter to express my interest in becoming a Summer Student Admission Assistant. I will be a rising sophomore, originally from Vietnam, fluent in English and Vietnamese. I believe I’m qualified for this position due to my experience with admissions work and my passion for Georgetown University.

“Final call girl’s four by eight-hundred-meter relay” called the official. The Ontario Track girl’s four by eight-meter team trooped up to lane one, in unison. I would not have wanted to be racing with anyone else but my relay family. We had trained all season for this one race. Every workout, asthma attack, tear, and shin splint has lead up to this one race to break a twenty year old school record. As we jogged with the official from the bullpen to the starting line, the crowd had uproars of excitement for the athletes. An immense smile grew across my face, not only from the ecstatic crowd, but from the anticipation to race. I approached the starting line, in the first lane, while my teammates arrayed along the fence with the other second,

“What are you even doing here? I have never seen such flawed technique in all my years as a choreographer.” The words echoed throughout the medical college auditorium. Impelled by the admonishment in front of my peers, I persevered in my endeavor to improve upon my dancing prowess and by the final year of medical school was leading the college dance team. The above mentioned undertaking further spawned an interest for the discipline of Latin Ballroom which lead to participation at the national level. The unwavering focus and persistence even in the face of unfavorable odds is more broadly reflective of my approach towards learning, both academic and extracurricular. This has been instrumental in achieving stellar academic outcomes including being ranked nationally in the top 0.0004 percent in the premedical test and the top 0.6 percent in the common aptitude test for management training.

Just as the institution is eager to continue embracing the ever-changing world of healthcare and medicine, I too embody this same distinguishing characteristic. Throughout my undergraduate experiences I have learned in order to be a steward and servant of the medical profession one must exercise teamwork, service, empathy, accountability, and optimism; all of which coincide with the tenets that are declared by the Meharry Medical College, School of Medicine culture. Attending this medical school would be one of the greatest rewards for my motivation and persistence. During my high school years, I can confidently say I have excelled in my academic endeavours. This success is partially due to my desire to learn. As a person who wants to practice medicine in an underserved population, my goal is to understand the healthcare context and cultural perceptions in the local community. I am interested in this program because it'll help me career wise and help me with personal growth. After I graduate high school I am planning on following the pre-med track as a major and this program would help me get a sense of what its going to be like as a pre-med student prior to me going to a college or universities, if I join their medical science track. In addition, although I want to study pre-medicine and science I haven't had much opportunities to study the different branches of sciences outside my school's curriculum, which is usual regents based and they only have 1 AP science class, AP environmental science which isn't the field I am interested in. After completing a summer of UF Science for Life and fully adapting into the Honors program, I will feel prepared to apply to the Juniors Honors Medical Program my sophomore year. This program, assuring my place at the UF College of Medicine, would help tailor the rest of my UF education towards my dream profession. JHMP will take the research I will have done, along with an enriched understanding of diversity, to another level.

I believe that the Hospitalist Project or the Comprehensive Care Program is the ideal program for me. It will be an opportunity for me to involve myself in clinical research as well as obtaining valuable experience that will aid me down my life path.

By having the opportunity to participate in R.E.A.P (Research, Engineering, Apprenticeship, Program) this summer at Fayetteville State University, I will have the chance to brighten my horizon and develop my S.T.E.M skills in a way that I do not have the opportunity to do in school.

The CRISSP program is not a program to be taken lightly. It is a program that could provide me with the insight to jump-start the rest of my professional endeavors. There are several reasons why I would like to attend this one-of-a-kind experience. One reason being that it will serve to develop my passion in the medical field by exposing me to hands on situations. I have always had a love for the sciences, especially biology. I think it is magnificent how technology has been a catalyst for the development of cures and treatments, yet there are still many medical enigmas. Also, by attending this program it will allow me to network with numerous seasoned professionals. The Atlantis Project was appealing to me because it not only offers preparation for medical school through clinical shadowing and MCAT prep, but also helps to train well-rounded future physicians. Community volunteering, for example, gives students the opportunity to experience life in other parts of the world, and to be more culturally competent and aware. In addition, this program was unique to me in the sense that fellows engage in cultural opportunities outside of the hospital, and conduct activities together that will foster a strong support system and social network.

At the start of my Sophomore year attending San Diego State University I joined a club called Aztecs Professional Pre-Health Organization (APPHO). Not only did APPHO introduce me to other students who have the same motivation to enter into the Health field as I do, but it also helped me find guidance on my path to becoming a Physician.
