It has always been easier to define mental illnesses than to define mental health. In the United States, the American Psychiatric Association has traditionally been the organization to define mental disorders (beginning as early as in 1917 when it was known as The Association of Medical Superintendents of American Institutions of the Insane). More recently many have recognized that mental health is more than the absence of mental illness. Even though many of us don't suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder, it is clear that some of us are mentally healthier than others. The characteristic of "resilience" is shared by those who cope well with stress. • Balance - Balance in life seems to result in greater mental health. We all need to balance time spent socially with time spent alone. For example-those who spend all of their time alone may get labelled as "loners," and they may lose many of their social skills. Extreme social isolation may even result in a split with reality. Those who ignore the need for some solitary times also risk such a split. Balancing these two needs seems to be the key - although we all balance these differently. Other areas where balance seems to be important include the balance between work and play, the balance between sleep and wakefulness, the balance between rest and exercise and even the balance between time spent indoors and time spent
There for it is important to identify that it is mostly actions of other which may resolve in to improving/ sustaining our mental health or the opposite( too much letting down may resolve in not trusting people or lack of self-esteem)

I gained my first insight of the complexities of the human mind as a result of a close family member suffering from a range of psychological problems. Until this moment I had never considered health to include our mental wellbeing as well as physical. As I came to this realisation I also became fascinated with how much of our daily life is impacted by our thoughts and how we feel. This led me to begin questioning how and why some people suffer from mental health issues and how this develops over time.
One’s entire health is codependent upon various aspects of a stable mental and emotional health; these all rely on who they are, how they think of themself, and how they express what they feel. Furthermore, the state of one’s mental and emotional health can further impact their physical and social health. Good mental and emotional health is built upon several prime subcategories of this form of health, these consisting of one’s personal identity, their self-esteem, and their understanding and expression of emotions.

People who suffer from a mental illness may not look 'sick' and others might depending on the severity of the illness and possibly how long they have gone without being treated properly. A mental illness may have been inherited, life experiences may cause trauma or family history of mental health issues. Some may tell people that a "mental illness" is only a stage and they will get over it, although there are many signs that show early development of some sort of illness. There is a various amount of mental illnesses but they are all different in one way or another, some examples are; depression, schizophrenia, manic depression (bipolar disorder), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Mental illness is a health condition that affects a person's thinking, feeling and behavior. Generally it is not the result of only one event, but a combination of genetics, environment and lifestyle. Its symptoms can differ according to the type of disorder, however to better understand how it works, we have to look at the effects culture and society have on it.
There's a certain stigma that comes along with mental health issues. It's completely unnecessary and totally unfair. When people deal with physical issues like cancer, the flu or high cholesterol, they're handled with care. When people deal with mental health issues, they're ridiculed and pushed aside. However, mental health is a very real issue that needs to be addressed and handled. If you know someone who struggles with mental health issues, it's important to make sure you become intentional with how you interact with them. Whether it's a friend, family member or co-worker, here are a few things you'll want to do to engage and help them out.
In the past few years an issue has risen up to become our biggest social problem: Mental illness amongst youth. There are just too many facets to this issue and it would take more than a few paragraph essay here to dissert. I will thus only attempt to raise awareness about a dire social issue that has been growing in our younger and more vulnerable population.
But I personally believe it is the most important aspect. Your mental health is your overall well-being, and that is factored by the other 6 aspects (physical, emotional, environmental, social, occupational, spiritual). My mental health is not as good as it should be, as I am challenged by multiple mental illnesses that tend to battle with my general mental health, making it weaker than most people. Since my mental health is weaker than most, it makes some daily tasks a complete struggle. My mentality gets sent into a tailspin a lot easier than most people I know, even by small things sometimes. My mental health is one of my biggest weaknesses, but I am trying to improve it with the help of counselling. As a CYC worker, I will help youth learn how to manage their mental health, good or bad. They will be able to learn that not all days are bad and that although the bad times tend to stand out more than the good times, theres always something positive to see (such as something so small as the sun rising in the morning). As a CYC worker, my goal is to help prevent youth from feeling the same way I felt when I was younger. Depression and its many forms is no joke and is a serious disorder.
