A person's character changed for the better during his service in the military. To begin with, mandatory service teaches the person self discipline. Michael Anthony, an author who served in US army, writes in his article, "What the Military Teaches About Self Discipline," that discipline must be ground into conscript. What is courage? According to Webster’s dictionary, courage is the ability to do something that you know is difficult or dangerous. Courage describes the men in the 54th regiment perfectly. Courage is portrayed to be a special kind of knowledge or gift that you are born with. It can be demonstrated as rescuing a princess or even standing up to the local school bully. Being committed is a state of mind. A commitment, however, is more than just something you intend to do; there is also someone who expects you to do it. I have made several major commitments in my life, the first being, enlisting in the Unites States Coast Guard fresh out of high school. Courage is over ruling your fear and doing whatever you think is right, no matter the consequences. There are many different types of definitions of courage, varying on the person. The one I just stated is my definition of courage. The different types of courage are: Social/Moral courage, Intellectual/Emotional courage, and Physical courage. Social/Moral courage is when you do the right thing, even at the risk of being embarrassed, excluded, unpopular, rejected, shamed, and disapproved. Intellectual/Emotional courage is when you accept challenging ideas, and to question the thinking from yourself, even at the risk of making a mistake or mistakes. The meaning of courage that comes to my mind instinctively is the ability to get out of your comfort zone and take bold decisions and risks knowing that there is a considerable chance of failure to achieve that goal. Courage is one of the elements in a personality of an individual that distincts leaders from the rest of the population. To have courage, you must be able to put aside personal interests and work towards a goal that benefits other people, even though it might involve taking risks. For example, a fireman has the courage to risk his own life in attempt to save the lives of people trapped in a fire-wrapped building. Courage is something that everybody wants to have. It is an attribute of good character that makes a person worthy of respect. A courageous person understands the danger and decides to overcome their fear by acting according to their values. Courage is wisely balanced between the weaknesses of cowardice and recklessness. Courage is a broad and much used subject used all across literature. Courage is the ability to face something that may frighten one or make them feel intimidated or insecure. People use bravery to do things everyday no matter how little or big. I have used bravery to do things as well. The most valuable thing I have with the bravery within me is to stand up to my friend.

Courage is a cornerstone of wartime leadership. Throughout history, Courage has been the defining virtue of the warrior and for good cause. Warriors face frightening and dangerous situations; and the wartime leader must lead these warriors from the front by displaying the courage they expect to see in their men. Without courage, a leader cannot lead from the front nor do the right thing during unfavorable times.
