Leadership is defined as the process in which an individual influences the group of individuals to attain a common goal. The goal is attained by mutual cooperation and cohesive behavior. A leader infuses a sense of positivity and directs others to reach the specified goal. Some would say military leaders are made, or just got well trained to be a leader. I feel there are born leaders and some who are given the position to be a leader. Their qualities I think you should posses to be a great leader, such as: Ability to learn on the job, share credit for success, can control emotions, has ability to communicate goal and vision, and most important integrity. I had the ability to bring sailors to a common goal without having to pull teeth or threaten them. I was the type of leader that people wanted to follow with out hesitation, from what I was told. My concept of leading was that I can not lead if I don’t know how to follow, I can’t ask for something to get done if I have not done it myself. Some days I would help the junior sailors with the task I ask them to complete, to show them that this work is no beneath me and I’m not above you just appointed as the leader. With this I believe that I gain much respect and made it easier for me to ask them for hard jobs to get done without any push back about it. One day I sat all the sailors that work for me down and ask them about how they feel about how they feel about my leadership. The one thing they said that I did better then any of the other second class petty officer was I shared the credit. It was time that I did a job and made sure that some one else got the credit for it, because I felt like that it was something that needed to be done. I was were i wanted to be at that point of my career and want them to receive the same recognition’s I had for doing the same job when I was an junior sailor. Lincoln had a “remarkable ability to communicate his goals. He made concepts simple and communicated with an understanding of the concerns of the citizens. Qualities of being a leader require a specific amount of traits. To be a leader is the ability to gain the attention of your audience and become an idol to them. Being a leader can be tough, it takes perseverance, communication, and speak your mind when need be. Also responsibility, being able to own up if you’re wrong about something and not lead your group in the wrong direction. Leaders also never give up when it gets tough, because being a leader isn’t always going to be easy. That’s what makes a leader.
My leadership philosophy revolves entirely around the Army Values. In every action I take as a leader, I assess whether or not it lines up with the Army Values and the potential impacts. I have had a variety of leadership assignments during my career, all requiring a different leadership approach, spanning from team leader through platoon sergeant. My conflict resolution skills have greatly evolved through my twelve years in the Army, from rudimentary conversations to in depth problem solving. My professional development has had a profound effect on my leadership abilities, from NCOPD’s to mentorship from senior non-commissioned officers (NCO’s).
Leadership is all about having the right amount of heart and determination to help make a difference in someone’s life. It takes certain qualities to be considered a good leader. A leader should want to help inspire others to make a change and to be the best that they can be. A true leader does not need to feel powerful, instead they empower those around them. Throughout my life I have come across various leaders who have made an impact on my life. It takes a very special person to inspire and touch people’s lives. Leadership is so much deeper than having power and bossing people around.
There are a variety of ways to define both leader and leadership. There is not, however, a clear definition of how to become one. There is no set list of mandatory traits, either innate or learned, that a person must embody to be considered successful or proved a failure. What I feel it takes is the right mix of strengths and weaknesses in a given situation to demonstrate effectiveness. No one person has abilities without accompanying deficiencies. It’s all in the way they are balanced. The balance in the way one uses his or hers’ abilities will ultimately determine the type of leadership one has throughout time. Have you ever been in a situation where you had to take charge, and take on leadership roles in a short period of time ? Some people may say that not everyone can be a leader. Some also believe that leaders are born with the necessary qualities, which make them successful as a leader. Others believe that leadership, like many other character traits, can be learned and developed through life. The debate depends on how you define leadership. A leader can be made in certain situations of survival. It can range from promoting what is right to perform social changes, or just to execute their own ideas. When you are a leader you gain a certain sense of independence, and pride that you started something. Therefore, when it’s finished you get to show people that you were able to accomplish all of this.
I have been in the Army for almost six years and never considered establishing my own leadership philosophy. Perhaps I always looked up to my leaders and believed they were constantly setting a new standard in the Army. As I progress as a Noncommissioned Officer, I regularly assess my leadership skills. Through my years in as a soldier in the Army, I have compiled my own leadership philosophy.
One month prior to the end of the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln gave his Second Inaugural Address. He gave a short speech that focused on the the effects of the Civil War and his vision of future for the United States. Lincoln is hoping to bring the nation back together after years of hateful divide. He intends to inspire reunification amongst the northern and southern states. Throughout his speech, Lincoln uses numerous rhetoric devices to persuade the American people. His diction and appeal to Christian values further supports his goal.

Leadership, to me, is more than just being able to tell people what to do. You have to be able to respect them, listen to their ideas, and make them feel equal. It’s not about setting yourself above everyone else; it’s the ability to influence others in a positive manner. A good leader is someone who inspires others to dream bigger or become that better person they’ve always wanted to be. Leadership entails bringing out the best in everyone, or at least being able to see their best qualities. Someone could be thrust into a leadership position, but lack those qualities, therefore, holding a leadership position doesn’t automatically qualify you as a leader. These highly specific qualities require constant learning, understanding, and growth, and are characteristics that even the best leaders are still trying to perfect.
Being a leader is a hard role to play because leaders have great responsibilities. They have to make choices that could change people’s lives. Being a great leader means that they have to be honest, delegate, have a positive attitude, be creative, be committed, confidence, and have great communication skills.
Those military officers who are destined to become a leader are trained within the organization for the most effective use of manpower and resources. The Army uses a philosophy of leadership developed over the last several decades by subjecting Army personnel to the philosophy of command. This philosophy is stemmed from the “Golden Rule” of leadership. One’s values, ethics and virtues are needed from the beginning and are continual resources for making a good leader. One the basic comparisons between the military and higher education leadership is the progression of one’s ability to have a “vision” to complete the mission or operational responsibilities (Beach, 2015; Martinez, 2011).
Leaders are not born or chosen, they are made. Most people consider themselves leaders solely due to the fact they are elected to be them for their skill. For instance, the captain of a certain soccer team may be captian solely because he can score goals gracefully and with ease, not because he knows how to motivate his team and lead them into the right direction. I wish I could say I never fit into this category, but the truth is, I did at one point. I was elected Captain of our school’s color guard team almost immediately after I entered High School. Leadership is not only a title but it is a strong persuasive individual demonstrating outstanding qualities for others to follow. But does the title "leadership" have more value than reality or do you demonstrate those qualities to become that leader. Becoming a leader has to be earned, but not all leaders are awarded or known for whom they are and what they did. In order to become a leader you don't need that title, in fact it can be anyone you can be the teacher of your class, your family or even your neighborhood. A leader is someone who demonstrates exemplarily dedication to his or her team, and will strive to make a better team as a whole.
The concept of leadership is not a common entity among the ideals of people. Most people are just looking for a leader to lead them but are not willing to step up and be the leader themselves. Leadership can come in many different forms and is based off of the followers and the experiences they live. Leadership, whether it come from the traits someone is born with or the skill set they have acquired over time, I believe is something everyone should aspire to have. I believe that everyone should always aspire to be something greater without letting anything sway them.
Anyone can be a leader. Leaders come in all shapes, sizes, races, talents, and abilities. Leadership can be described in numerous different ways. According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, leadership is the position or office held by a leader. Oxford dictionary defines leadership as the action of leading a group of people or organization. Ask anyone on the street, and they will give another definition. All of these definitions have one thing in common: leaders are in a position of power and they are in charge of a group of people. However, there is a difference between being a leader and being a good leader. It takes more than simply leading people. Leaders are a role model. They are the people looked to in a time of uncertainty. They are the ones looked to as a guide.
