Rhetorical Analysis of Chapter 1-2 of Mindset
In chapter 1 and 2, “Mindset,” by Carol S. Dweck, describes the what growth mindset and a fixed mindset means. She begins describing the differences between an individual with a growth mindset and a fixed mindset, by describing how they would react and corporate with failing, and how they care about improving themselves and their abilities. Dweck claims that an individual with a growth mindset can accomplish their goals and be more successful, and an individual with a fixed mindset may lose or miss great opportunities because they do not put enough effort to learn, and lack of confidence. Dweck uses analogy, ethos, and irony to support her claim and purpose.
Dweck uses an analogy that was written by the French in the 1100s, to support the idea how people with a growth mindset can accomplish their goals because they give enough effort in learning not just passing a class without understanding. It supports the idea that people with growth mindset have patience, confidence, and a belief that their intelligence is changeable, not like what fixed mindset people think. According to Dweck in chapter 1, “If Rome wasn’t built in a day, maybe it was not meant to be,” (pg. 10). The author explains how individuals with a fixed mindset are always a failure and are not able to be successful because they do not have confidence, and they do not put enough effort for improvement. The author is persuading and encouraging the people with fixed mindset, to start working hard, have confidence about themselves, think positive about themselves, never think about the negative side that their intelligence is not changeable, and if you did a mistake it is not the end of the world, but you can still fix and learn from your
