Modest Proposal Assignment
After reading Swift’s “A Modest Proposal,” it is time for you to be the satirist. First think of a major problem in modern society (It can be a domestic or international struggle). Then create an absurd solution but effectively argue that solution with ethos, logos and pathos. Do not be afraid to experiment with so-called experts, fantastic statistics and confusing syllogism (when you come to a conclusion from two different sources). In fact, a strategy you may want to use is to confuse the reader with absurd complexity.
In a 1-2 page typed essay (double-spaced, 12 pt font, Times New Roman or Calibri size 11 if using

You may feel free to add additional paragraphs where appropriate, but your essay should follow the basic model below. For proficiency each letter must be fulfilled; advanced papers include the minimum and a controlled use of language, obvious constructed persona, and vivid details:
1. 3 word title followed by 25-30 word subtitle. Your essay should be called “A Modest
Proposal,” but the subtitle should flesh out what societal problem you are trying to solve
(without giving away your “shocking” element). (Swift’s full title is “A Modest Proposal for
Preventing the Children of Poor People in Ireland from Being a Burden to Their Parents or
Country, and for Making Them Beneficial to the Public.” Shoot for something like that.)
2. Paragraph 1: A clear first paragraph that contains an indelible image of your societal problem. (Swift’s image in his first paragraph is that of the mother with six children dressed in rags begging for alms. Try to include an image of your problem that elicits the readers’

Paragraph 2: A paragraph description of your shocking solution. (This is like the paragraph in which Swift talks “delicious and nourishing” babies.)

A Modest Proposal is an audacious piece of writing aimed for more than just the country of Ireland. Jonathan Swift develops an objective plan of suggestions that would ironically do the complete opposite of what he wanted to achieve. His primary goal, along with many others, was to improve the country’s economy. This in turn led to an exaggerated piece in which the author recommends his country to eat the less valuable of the bunch; hoping to decrease hunger, overpopulation, and increase market income.
In Jonathan Swift's satirical essay “A Modest Proposal” he addresses the issues of the nation of Ireland and the problems that it is having with its government because it is doing nothing to help their people come up from issues such as poverty, overpopulation and other crudely addressed political issues. In an attempt to solve these national problems, Swift comes up with a very unique and intense proposition on how the problem can be fixed and dealt with. By providing the reader with a combination of all the three rhetorical appeals ethos, logos, and pathos, Swift can easily, slowly, and effectively bring his proposition into view without the reader completely discarding it from consideration as Swift's words take into deliberation the feelings
Jonathan Swift, the writer of the satirical essay A Modest Proposal, grew up and lived in Ireland during times of famine and economic struggles (Conditions). Growing up with a single mother and no father, Swift knew what hard times and struggles were like (Jonathan Swift: Biography). His essay proposes an easy solution to the economic problems going on in Ireland for both the wealthy ruling classes and the poorer classes, although his intentions and the meaning behind his words are not what would be originally thought when initially reading the essay. Through his word choices and the description of specific events of his time, Swift uses satire to grab his audience’s attention and get his own personal ideas and opinions out about all the

Jonathan Swift's 1729 essay, A Modest Proposal, was a true example of satire at its best. Many readers at the time rejected the essay because they failed to understand the irony. It is presently one of the most well known works of satire and is a classic example of the technique most commonly used today. The entire essay from the title down to the last sentence were meant to be taken ironically, which is a rare form, but very effective when trying getting a point across. This essay will explain why the text was meant to be taken ironically and why Swift used irony instead of straightforward statements.
