Prior to this class I had been in both chorus and band, along with general music classes through fifth grade. Although, I did not have very much knowledge on music history or the many different music composers. My knowledge in music was mainly revolved around music theory and harmony. When the semester began I was not positive what was in store for me, however what I was sure about was two things. One, I would love whatever we learn for I have a deeply rooted love for music. And two, I would leave this class with an abundance of knowledge. Now that it is the end of the semester I can say with confidence that both of these are true Different aspects of this class and several pieces of information will be spoken about thoroughly in the next number of paragraphs.
Before this course, much pain and time a piece of music could take was never taken into consideration. The amount of thought that goes into the piece is amazing and all of the things that must take into consideration are extraordinary. The concept of unity and variety is one that is the easiest to understand. To please the listeners they must have a balance of unity and variety. Unity can be shown using repetition, imitation and stretto, along with many other things. When a composer uses repetition they restate a previous line using the same pitch and voice. Imitation is when a composer repeats the same line of music, except this time using slightly different techniques or instruments. When a composer uses stretto
Music should be understood, but not at the expense of the performer creating a “right result” and in turn taking away from the listeners enjoyment of the work being presented.
Music has been around since the dawn of time, ever since man first inhabited this planet we have learned to communicate in ways other then conventional speaking. Different Cultures all have there own specific way of communicating through music. Music is basically broken into two specific groups Eastern Music and Western Music. Eastern music is mainly derived from the orient and India. While, Western music first emerged from Europe. Western music has developed in many ways since the middle ages through its form, sound, and message.
The power of music is as strong today as it has ever been before. Throughout history music has been a way for our people to speak out against the government or follow their commands. There is a great irony that a lot of these songs nowadays all tie together to portray the same message, and this is not a coincidence. “Today, hip-hop has taken the lead in protesting police brutality and the injustices suffered by the poor.” Within the selection of songs, the audience can see how the government tries to control us, as well as how there is still much racism going on today.
The genre of music known as Rhythm and Blues (R&B) came to the forefront of the music world in the mid-1950 's. This genre of music still incorporated the tempo and the soulful sound of the blues, however, it placed more emphasis on the lyrical aspect of the songs and less on the instrumental aspect. As time went on R&B began to shape until reaching its most perfect form in the 1990’s. This decade ushered in musical acts such as Boyz II Men, Aaliyah, Keith Sweat, Maxwell, and Erykah Badu. Music does a good job of influencing the society that surrounds it. The R&B of the 1990’s specifically influenced the black community by promoting the ideologies that are already deeply hidden within the culture. Ideologies such as passionate love, self-expression through fashion, family connectedness and emotional vulnerability are all topics that are dissected through this genre of music. Before 1990’s R&B, people within the black community conformed to the things that society thought to be acceptable for people of color. That all changed when this new era was ushered in, people began to march to the beat of their own drums. Although 90’s music is a thing of the past, the impact that it has made in regards to black culture can still be seen today in the form of new artists, social issues, and current trends.

When delving into the historical music and sounds of the South for research purposes one might need to encounter a website with all the content they require. I chose this topic because music is a history, a culture and everything. Music is a very important role in our daily life. Maybe most of the people wouldn’t know it or feel it but without music everything would have changed. Music have been a big part of our lives, most of the culture has music. So can music change the world or the world will change music?
The same colors of music have been used to paint unique masterpieces throughout history. From Mozart to Michael Jackson and Beethoven to Bob Marley, the behaviors of sound– melodies, harmonies and chords– have been manipulated by individuals to communicate their soul’s message to the masses. The connections between music from the renaissance to contemporary tunes is quite surprising. The Beatles weren 't the first ones to talk about love, life struggles or heartache. These have been common themes of everyone’s lives since Adam and Eve. Bob Marley and Michael Jackson took their own personal experiences and paired it with the universal language of music to connect with people. Through a multitude of albums and singles, these two artists created timeless pieces of music, some of which are still present on the top charts. Although some disagree with the fact that their music is timeless, by comparing the music of Michael Jackson and Bob Marley to music that is known as timeless, one can see the direct correlation.
Without music the world wouldn’t be the way it. Music has changed the way people have looked at others, have acted, and how they see the world today. From the beginning of music when it came from banging on something to make their own beat. Music became a hideout for people when they needed a place to send their mind. Musicians are the biggest part of music and making it the way it is. Certain musicians changed the way people started to look at music in the 60s. The 60s were a time for standing up for what the country believed it, a time to show the “overpowered” people that they weren 't afraid. Those people looked to musicians such as; Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Jimi Hendrix, and many others to help them through that difficult time in the country.
Over the course of a millennium, music has been a huge factor in each society in different time periods in history. Music is considered as a language, that anybody from anywhere can read and understand without translation. Desire and attraction for music is not just for human beings, it’s is common in all living things. Music can be used to relax, to study, and to do physically demanding activities. Music not only helps with studying but there are so many benefits that come along with having music in your life.
In the middle of the year, a few of us get to take a trip to some of the elementary schools in Chesterfield County, teach the students about music, and play a piece or two for them. Their faces when they experience this is something my peers and I love to see. Also, when they ask us questions about how to join band or about our instruments, it makes me think about when I was in fourth grade just starting to learn how to play my flute. I was so excited and happy to be learning about music. I feel that music is a gift that has to be shared with others and it really does heal and help us. Next, if my friend or I don’t know the answer to a question in class, someone always knows the answer and we can go to them for assistance and guidance. Everyone is extremely personable and that helps when we learn new pieces. Lastly, we are taught new things everyday, especially when we go to assessment. Assessment is when we play for judges, get a score, and are told what went good and what we need to work on. This helps us improve our playing for future pieces and performances. This class is a great learning experience for ourselves and everyone around
Music is a meddler. Music has followed me all throughout my life, in car rides, concerts, and parties; generally, every day and every occasion. Apart from being an activity to opt out of perpetual boredom, music has also influenced me in much deeper meaning all throughout my life rather than simply providing me with pure entertainment.
There are thousands of songs, and the artists and songwriters who wrote them. Each song has their own meaning, which the listener can identify by, can relate to. The listener can listen to the beat, the lyrics, anything about the song, and connect with it. Music’s unlike anything else. Music can mend a broken soul, send a message, or a way to identify with, unlike anything else. Hundreds of songs resonate with me, that I can identify with. Yet others aren’t going to resonate or identify with the same songs that I do, that is what makes music, music. Something that can have so abounding different affects people, yet can accomplish what other methods cannot. Methods such as medication or therapy, that can help with conditions such as depression, or losing a loved one. Creating music can not only help the listener cope with stressors in their life, but the artists as well. Nothings like music.
