My Leadership Philosophy: Understanding Strengths

The foundation of my personal leadership philosophy can be found in the principles of servant leadership as spelled out by Greenleaf (1970, 1977). Leadership is granted to individuals who are by nature servants. An individual emerges as a leader by first becoming a servant. Servant leaders attend to the needs of those they serve and help them become more informed, free, self-sufficient, and like servants themselves. Leaders and those they serve improve, enhance, and develop each other through their connection. A leader must also be conscious of inequalities and social injustices in the organizations they serve and work actively to resolve those issues. Discharge planning, education, and follow-up are areas healthcare facilities fail patients significantly. Often times, the bedside nurse has little time to actually sit down to provide the patient with detailed discharge instructions. My vision for a new and improved healthcare environment is to have discharge teams to assist patients with needs outside the healthcare facility, educate patients and families about disease process, and provide follow-up appointments and calls to promote compliance of treatment.

This is my personal leadership philosophy, which is based on life and work experiences. As a leader I will ensure our team’s is successful in meeting the organizations objectives. I will motivate, support, provide purpose and direction to those around me. I will unlock our team’s hidden potential and will drive to develop a high-performing team.

A leadership philosophy is something that is in constant development. According to Dr. Sosic, an individual’s leadership philosophy evolves as new life events influence and change the individual’s view of the world. If a person sees or experiences something in practice, he believes to be in-line with his own values; he should adapt it to his own personal leadership philosophy. Major Jonathan Sawtelle, in his book Resilient Effective Adaptable Leadership talks about how a “shared purpose must be cultivated within a vision and values for promoting expertise, innovation, and risk taking.” I believe his statement aligns with the key principles of my personal leadership philosophy, which are leading by example, fostering innovative thinking,

Belief must be the foundation for becoming an effective leader. In the book, Strength Based Leadership, Belief is presented as one of the strength characteristics of a leader: "People strong in the Belief theme have certain core values that are unchanging. Out of these values emerges a defined purpose for their life" pg. 123. A strong set of core values provides the leader with a consistent point of reference and a moral compass. My core values are rooted in my faith in Jesus Christ as my personal savior. When reflecting on my own leadership philosophy, it occurred to me that I had never purposefully outlined the qualities that I desire to demonstrate as a leader. Conversely, in the past, I have put a concentrated effort in deciding the leadership qualities that I hope to avoid. For example, I do not wish to be a micromanager. An organization can never grow larger than a micromanager can handle, thus limiting growth. When building my leadership philosophy I reflected on both leaders that I admire, and leaders that I have encountered whom I view as weak or toxic. Leadership development is a process that is continuously ongoing, starting with tools gathered from parents, family, teachers, coaches, and with people who we encounter every day. Leadership is simply one’s ability to lead work, family, and in life. At work a leader has an obligation to the people in their charge and those above them to meet and exceed expectations for the good of the organization or group. Results from the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) 360 list: shows others how their long-term interests can be realized by enlisting in common vision, finds ways to celebrate accomplishments, supports the decisions that people make on their own. The leadership approach that comes natural to me is “Take care of your People”, Taking care of your people is something that I feel strongly about. “Leading by Example” says that I will not ask my crew to do anything that I would not do. “Be fair” is something that has been instilled in me throughout my upbringing and a leadership trait that I carry with me today. Leadership Influences from upbringing, life interactions, and work can help define the meaning for each person.

Leadership is the ability to engage, inspire, motivate, and support others through setting examples and mentoring others. A leader must be connected and aware of their abilities and values while being able to identify their personal challenges. Displaying confidence in your leadership approach will allow for others to trust your lead and achieve positive results. Benjamin E. Mays, former president of Morehouse College, thought to be one of the greatest student affairs professionals, quoted, “Every man and woman is born into the world to do something unique and something distinctive and if he or she does not do it, it will never be done.” It is our job as student affairs professionals to use our strengths to have an impact on our students.

During the course of leadership, my philosophy of being a leader changed from managing people to leading them. To be a leader means to help people solving problems, being decisive and taking responsibility for decisions, creating teams, having individual approach to people using emotional intelligence, connecting superior’s needs with subordinates’ outcomes in pleasant, effective environment. It is also essential for a leader to know himself well. Knowing own personality it is easier to communicate effectively and achieve goals depicted above. My leadership philosophy has changed throughout the years. I believe that leadership is not just about leading or being a “boss” (having a title). Leadership is about knowing when to lead and when to follow as well as being able to listen to others and their opinions or different points of view. Being able to look at situations and things in different ways is an important factor because having an open mind will help make a difference and solve problems in many ways. It will also allow leaders to acknowledge all the members and their different ways of contributing their inputs. Through learning about principal leadership theories in this course, I am working towards developing my own leadership philosophy.

Philosophy is a theory or attitude held by a person or organization that acts as a guiding principle for behavior. Each of these philosophical elements require thought and development time. A leadership philosophy is the way we see ourselves as leaders and this philosophy guides our actions, behaviors and thoughts. Moreover, leadership philosophies can change as you grow to understand yourself within the context of leading. Why is a leadership philosophy necessary? Three reasons to develop and use a leadership philosophy, they are: character, consistency, and collaboration. A solid leadership philosophy will build greater self-awareness in how you act and speak. This paper explores introduction, mission statement, reflection of a model/idol leader, personal leadership philosophy and an overall conclusion is included in the assignment.

My leadership philosophy is based on the idea of giving others opportunity and making sure moral and ethical standards are kept. A leader’s faith, values and character should all be a priority in their leadership style and should never be risked.
