My Online Community Essay

The advancement of technology has launched with many different ways to communicate. From sending letters by mail and having to wait weeks to get, to receiving a message instantly in just seconds by using the internet. The internet is used by everyone and has become the most effective way to communicate online and meet other people. It has grown to become its own community. The internet, not only is it used to communicate, but for multiple things. Such as news, sharing ideas, research, arguing, blogging, etc. In an article, Weblogs: Learning in Public, by Jill Walker Rettberg, a teacher at a school decides to have her students use the internet in order to put their work into the real life. Her students have to create their own personal weblogs as an assignment, where they can share and write about whatever they please. I agree with Rettberg’s decision on her assignment because it will expose young adolescence to a whole different community where it will have an effect on their knowledge making and how they define themselves.

I wonder what happened to society? Back in my day everyone loved to hang out and socialise it was considered as being a human being. These days’ teenagers would much rather prefer to socialise with people through the use of the internet. Now it’s not the internet that’s a problem, and I am not saying that people should not browse through the web, but social media is damaging our teenagers lives.

Living Learning Communities facilitate learning, growth, and friendship. LLCs seek students who are dedicated and motivated. Personally, I am both; throughout high school, I have worked hard and studied hard. I maintained a high GPA while participating in theatre almost every day after school. Indeed, I was able to take rigorous Advanced Placement courses along with dual enrollment engineering course while helping to run my school’s theatre company, Lymlight Production. I plan to continue both this hard work while at USF. Thus, living in an LLC will help me meet my goals.

Older generations don’t realize how much technology has affected this generation of teenagers, along with the social media that comes along with the technology. As stated in “How Social Media Changed Teens’ Lives Forever”; “Negative posts or comments also can do great damage to a teen’s self-esteem.” (Ashley Black, Thomas Atseff and Colleen Kaveney) While many parents think social media is just a way to connect with others, many teenagers take it for granted. For example, “quitting social media because it made her miserable and obsessed with appearing perfect online”, is what a teenager felt about social media and what it has done to her. Though many think that social media is a great way to connect, teenagers take it to another level.

The locality I have based my community profile on is Ardoyne. I feel that Ardoyne is familiar enough for me to carry out my research as I have lived here all my life. Although my project is based in Belfast city centre, we work with many groups and young people from the Ardoyne area. this would prove beneficial to myself as I would sometimes have already developed a relationship with the young people through community life.

I was unaware that many of the site’s users are very liberal in their political views. Having been raised in a fairly conservative household (FOX News was the only news channel we ever watched), I wasn’t exactly familiar with Democratic viewpoints. On tumblr I often found myself coming into contact with political opinions that stood in direct opposition of what I’d always been told. With this new influx of ideas I soon realized that the assumptions I had been trained to keep in the back of my head about minorities were offensive and racist. The internet is one of the world’s most influential platforms. Since the creation of the internet, social media and media itself have made their way into being more and more prominent in the lives of humans, especially in the lives of our youth. According to an article in The Washington Post, “Teens spend nearly nine hours a day consuming media” (Teens Spend Nearly 9 Hours a Day Consuming Media). , which means it is where most of their time is being spent, whether that is in school, at work, or, at home. Although there are many great things that are learned and shared on the internet through all types of media, there are many negative factors shared as well that are just as impactful.

The second concept I want to talk about is virtual communities. Virtual communities are social groups whose interactions are mediated through information technologies, particularly the internet. Like modernism, virtual communities are very dependent on technology and the internet. Since science and technology has advanced in the past decade, people don’t need to go to different places to meet different people and can meet others over different social media platforms or even video games. Sometimes, those people met over the internet can become very close friends. For example, I play a lot of video games and I have acquainted myself virtually with many people playing those games. Some of them I even ended up meeting in real life and are still friends with today. Virtual communities have become such a social norm, that soon, people will have friends all over the internet. I think the aspect of virtual communities is good for society, because it allows people to have a greater awareness of other cultures all over the world. With more insight of how other societies and cultures operate, there is a greater chance to expand one's own social
