I can remember as a child always asking myself the "why" questions of life. Why are we here? What is the purpose of life? Why do certain things happen? And is there really a God? I had always kept these questions to myself and eventually pushed them out of my mind altogether. I was raised in a Christian household and you just were not allowed to ask questions of that nature and doubt the faith. The world is the way it is because God made it that way and that is all there is to it. I was really excited to take this class because it would finally give me the opportunity to exercise my personal thoughts and beliefs. I have come to agree with Socrates that "the unexamined life is not worth living." In my opinion life is a combination of …show more content…
I am entering the medical field; so all the science courses I have taken have led me to believe that science is the answer. However, after taking this course I have realized that science can only take their answers just so far. There are some issues that science is unable to explain, like the existence of God. This is where philosophy enters. Philosophy continues further and attempts to give us logical explanations. Although science does continue to intrigue me, I do choose to accept that science does give us some answers. We learn from experience. Growing up we test this very often. If you put your hand over a flame you figure out that it is hot and you never try to touch it again. A fire will always be hot. There is no way around it. The chemicals and such that are involved will always react the same way it will produce heat. This is why I like the scientific method. It takes hypothesis and tests them over and over again until they come to a consistent answer or explanation. Although science does not give all the answers through empirical explanation, I turn to Philosophy for the rest. To lead a happy and fulfilling life, I believe we should all discover our own philosophy of life. Exercising the ability to rationally use our thinking and reasoning abilities is essential. We should all strive to be honest, good people and live our lives as well and happy as possible. Through experience we learn about ourselves and the world around us. I still have
Many philosophers have spent countless hours contemplating human existence and human purpose, but overall they are all analyzing one question- what is the best way to live? In almost every culture around the world, life is cherished and people have come up with religions and philosophies that suggest answers to the question concerning the best way to live. Some philosophies, such as Ayn Rand’s objectivism and Aristotle’s views on happiness, are centered around pursuing one’s own happiness and leading a fulfilling life. However, actually successfully living in the best way by pursuing one’s own happiness is quite challenging due to the complex restraints of human nature and human flaws. In order
In life, there are many ways you can live, however, the manner in which you live is your choice. In most peoples’ lives, they want to leave this world and say that they were happy and enjoyed every single moment of it. People feel like if they lived a happy life, then that is all that matters. But what if life has more to do than just being happy, what if it was meant for you to change the world or the lives of others? If you changed the life of another person and made them happy, you made a difference. A happy life is a good one, but a meaningful life is fruitful.
What is a life philosophy? The Merriam-Webster defines it as an overall vision of or attitude toward life and the purpose of life. This purpose or attitude toward life is based on the priorities, values/morals/beliefs, and lifestyle we live. Henry David Thoreau one of the greatest transcendentalist writer wrote in his novel Walden, “ I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.”(Walden 383) Here Thoreau explains that he did not understand his purpose and had no clear philosophy but went in search of it because he did not want to wake up one day on his deathbed regretting the life he lived and finding that it had no purpose. Thoreau, in the end, found his philosophy and I too found mine by reflecting on my beliefs, my priorities, and what kind of life I want to lead.
My philosophy of life has a consistent theme: it is most important to be a good person, i.e. good to your friends and family, good to your community, good to strangers, good to your environment, good to yourself. If you strive to do the right thing or at least strive to figure out what the right thing is, then you will be contributing to the greater good of mankind.
In life, we all are on a journey and have some goals. However, how we arrive and achieve goals varies from person to person. From a young age, most of us are taught right from wrong, but it is when we mature and start having more independence that our morals and ethics are put to the test. Everyone has an ethical boundary which will never change regardless of a financial, professional, or career situation. Personally, my personal credo is unique to me because of various situations and events I have gone through in my own journey.
What is the meaning of life? This is basically the most powerful question that we humans could ask ourselves. Probably the most instigating question too. “For the meaning of life differs from man to man, from day to day and from hour to hour. What matters, therefore, is not the meaning of life in general but rather the specific meaning of a person's life at a given moment.” Viktor E. Frankl.
My personal philosophy to life starts with you must create a plan for yourself, follow your heart, and remain positive while you execute those goals within your plan. In order to develop a plan, you must recognize your personal and core values. Some core values that were instilled in me growing up and that I use in my everyday life are honesty, integrity, happiness, faith, loyalty, independence, and most important respect to self. Always have high regards to who you are, and strive to be the best that you can be. Core values are embedded in our upbringing and creates the way you will orient to the world. Being a single mother of two children really puts these things into perspective. As we all know, life has many daily challenges, so develop your plan in faith,
In Jon Spayde’s article Learning in the Key of Life.He states that “the world’s a classroom”(Spayde 58) and I agree.I also agree with the idea that a formal education is a serious undertaking and that it is a very necessary tool in life. This article is not in any way meant to dissuade you from going to an established institute to obtain a degree, it is however intended to get one to think about continuing one’s education outside of the classroom.
What is the meaning of life? Well known Greek philosphers such as Socrates and Plato believed that our purpose in this life was to gain knowledge in preparation for the next life. Other Philosophers such as Epicurus believed that pleasure is the main goal in life. After giving these ideas lots of thought, I have come to my own conclusion that the true meaning of life is far more complex than either of these; far too complex for any human to fully comprehend. In fact these two different philosophies are only part of the grand picture. If it were that easy for men to figure out our lives wouldn't be so messed up now. The meaning of life revolves around many different things. I think
What is a sport? If you look it up in a dictionary it is defined as “An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.” For me sports is so much more than that. Sport is dedication, determination, teamwork and self discipline, for me sports is life.
Over the course of history, the entirety of the human race has been in a state of constant reflection upon what it truly means to partake in society’s mutual continuance. For the common man, the meaning of life seems to be a concept that sits beyond one's reach. Such an abstract thought is almost exclusively reserved for those who have passed on from this world. This is because of the fact that they enjoy the privilege of simply asking whoever waits for them up above in Heaven or down below in Hell. Few lucky members of humanity have achieved such a level of enlightenment while on Earth where they are able to understand what it truly means to exist. Despite the human tendency to lack insight, when carefully analyzed, the question “what is the meaning of life” becomes rather simplistic. While one endeavours upon the journey that is characterized as life, it is necessary that they experience three major aspects that encompass what it means to live. While a person prevails over existence, they must experience suffering, learn about the world around them, and know the full depth of human affection whether it be for another person, a non-intelligent being, or materialistic item.
According to the “Oxford English Dictionary”, ‘life’ is a noun that is defined as, “The condition that distinguishes animals and plants from inorganic matter, including the capacity for growth, reproduction, functional activity, and continual change preceding death.” (OED Online, Oxford University Press). So, it’s technically saying that life is the development and change of a living thing until it dies. Scientifically, that’s correct but there’s a much deeper meaning to life than given. There are about 7 billion human beings living on this earth at this moment. Each has their own unique life and destiny to follow. Everyone faces different challenges in life which supports the meaning of life being a unique set of experiences that lead people to their happiest and truest selves.
One's dream and aspirations to supersede in life must be stronger and greater than limitations set forth by others. The experience that were bestowed to me during my short life has elevated me to the woman I am today. Please walk with me as I give you the opportunity to see the world from my eyes:
For you to know how to live a contented life, you should know first the dissimilarity between what is right and what is wrong. Then, you have to choose to do things the right way.
One of the moments that I have failed and that have brought big consequences happened in college, to be more specific in the Spring 2017 semester. The moment and mistake is about the alteration of an official document that
