My Writing, Peer Editing, And Analyzing Readings

A freshman college level English Composition course aims to improve students' abilities with writing, critical thinking, mechanics and usage, punctuation, grammar, and vocabulary. By studying English 101 at Luzerne County Community College, I will work diligently to improve in all of these aspects. My main focus is to develop skills specifically to create clear and concise thesis statements, strong and persuasive essays with cajolement, and to develop different perspectives on narratives and other essays. These writing skills may also improve my critical thinking and reading skills.

Over the past year I had a chance to develop a deeper understanding of what it takes to develop successful paper. Taking English 1010 was a great experience because it prepares students on becoming better writers through college life. Even though this is my second year in college I was unable to take English 1010 the first year, but taking this class truly show me what college professors are looking for when we are ask to write a successful paper. College professors expect every student to be able to evaluate each topic and be descriptive in their essay.

When writing my papers in English I was never sure what topic, I wanted to write about. I rotated between two, one being “The Mistreatment of Animals in Zoos” and the second and my main topic being “Is College Worth the Cost.” When writing these papers, I noticed something about myself. I had grown as a writer compared to when I first walked into English 1100, I had some writing experience but not much my grammar lacked and I was the queen of sentence fragments. Throughout the semester during English 1100, my writing skills improved. From learning, how to format works cited page correctly to learning how to analyze a source. As I entered into English 101, I had the expectation of writing many unimaginative papers, while stressing if I was going to be able to complete my college and high school tasks. On top of all that, I was afraid of having a monotonous, boring professor. I soon realized that these assumptions were all invalid. I managed my tasks by completing everything in a timely manner and needed all the advice I could get from an outstanding English professor. When I enter English 102 in the fall, I have the expectation of being in a more language based composition class. My goals for English 102 are to continue to improve my writing skills, complete my work on time, and obtain information that I can use as I proceed in college. After I accomplish English 102, I hope to be able to be an improved writer and be able to convey ideas more

As for college so far this year, my writing has improved. English 101 has taught me more about developing my papers than what I previously knew about writing. Revision is an important part when finalizing any of my papers. As I wrap up writing each essay, going back over it to make sure that it all the readers will understand the point of the paper. As this semester comes to an end, I am able to gain insight of structure through the significance of the PIE format, more organized ideas, and rereading sentences with correct use of grammar.

During the fall semester I enrolled in an English 111 course to help improve my writing skills. Throughout the semester I was instructed to write four papers, not including this one. The topics for my essays were about; the value of education, victims and creators, a report essay, and last but not least a review essay. Each essay became more challenging than the previous one. As each essay came along, I applied the skills I learned in class and necessary peer evaluations to correct my mistakes so that I could get better at writing.

The Fall Quarter here at Bellevue College has helped me increase and further enhance my writing capabilities. Having to forget all my past knowledge in high school level writing was challenging but necessary. In the past, my writing never had the opportunity to progress. My high school essays were all carbon copies of each other. I would do the bare minimum and not put any effort into my writing, but still I would somehow receive a passing grade. The majority of the time I would wait until the night before the essay was due to start it. It would usually take me less than three hours to complete a paper. I became more focused on doing exactly what the teacher wanted than working on developing my style and enhancing my writing skills. After taking English 101, I have learned that writing is a process and I can’t write an essay the night before it’s due and expect a satisfactory grade. Taking English 101 has led me to think more critically towards my writing and others, develop style and tone, and learn how to use collaboration to my benefit.

If I were to sum up my experiences from both English 101 and 102 into a few words they would be essays, essays, and essays. Going into college, I dreaded having English courses since, I had taken English classes all my life and I was mentally drained from English. But mainly, because I thought I’d have to write extremely long papers. Subsequently, I had made up in my mind that college English would be hard period. Evidently, English wasn’t as bad as I had thought it would be. Over these two semesters of English I’ve learned and written a variety of different types of writing. A few include, controversial analysis, public arguments, rhetorical analysis, literary narratives, etc. Now, although I had probably heard of these previously before,

In the course English 101 at Capital Community College I was able to develop my writing very well. I enjoyed my first class at the college level but there are some things that I didn't find favorable. I put forth my best effort most of the semester and it's really shown in my grades. All my major essays have shown progress. Im satisfied with how far i have come as a writer and i do plan to take English 102.

This semester, we have practiced several reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. Many of these that have helped me become a better writer this past semester. The readings, writings, and critical thinkings were not the only things that helped me become a better writer. I highly believe that the constructive criticism from yourself Professor Freeman is what helped the most. Every Time you graded a paper and left comments it pushed me to do better and improve on the next. So if I was to take anything to English 101/Composition 2 it would be a combination of determination to be better and all of my skills i’ve learned over this semester, such as outlines, organization, analyzing, and how to write a working thesis.

In its setting is the expectation to have the ability to comprehend academic writings and be able to be tested on it. Even though I was a good reader, I found myself behind my peers when it came to testing. The same skills that I had gathered in my younger year seemed to have left me. I begun receiving average grades when it came to my reading and writing. Confused, I started to backtrack. I no longer read due to the negative memories that was attached. I additionally found it hard to write organized essays. What I had yet to realize was that Literacy can not only increase by reading, but by writing. While reading was beneficial, it had linked to other ways in which i could advance my literacy. Therefore, I began writing. Writing has not only become an essential hobby of mines, but had aided in my Advanced Placement classes. When writing, one should focus on

My writing has become increasingly more concise and I have learned how to sustain a logical argument in an organized manner. I have learned to identify different writing styles and make connections that weave things together. Moreover, I am hoping someday that the lessons I learned here in Writing 101 could help me to be successful in getting my Bachelor’s degree. At last, hopefully I can use everything I learned in this course to help me communicate more efficiently and effectively with other people. Before the class start, my objective was: I wanted to be more confident in constructing the grammar of my sentence and paragraph. At this completion of the course, I feel sure that I had the tools needed to further develop my writing skills on my own. I now have the knowledge in order to develop new ways to increment my vocabulary and to understand how to learn

Over the course of English 101, I have significantly improved my writing abilities. Through various writing assignments in this class, I have improved immensely. Many of the lessons I learned have come from the major essays. What I learned from these essays can be summed up by using 4 learning outcomes and their sub learning achievements. For each learning outcome, I Succeeded at least 2 of the sub learnings in the category through my essays and had few struggles with the learning outcomes.

What did you learn this semester? The golden question from all friends and family members when you come home for breaks. One would think that since my first language is English, writing papers would be easy. It should be, but it is not. I have learned that my writing was not as good as I thought it was. I have learned that throwing a paper together last minute does not work as good in college as it did in high school. I realized early on in the semester that I have trouble analyzing pieces of writing, I can give a summary all day, but analysis is not a strong suit of mine. Sometimes teachers believe that we automatically know how to write, we are not born with reading skills. It would be hard to believe if someone said that they learned nothing from English 111. From English 111 I learned that summarizing is not the same as synthesizing. I also learned that I needed to strengthen my critical reading, thinking, and composing skills. I also gained a better use and understanding of rhetoric knowledge such as audience, purpose and evidence. In conclusion English 111 taught me to be more aware of my conventions in writing. I believe that I have gained knowledge in critical thinking, rhetoric information, and conventions from this semester that have strengthened my writing and I can provide examples to back the clause.

At the beginning of this class I was nervous on how this semester will go and whether or not I will succeed to my fullest potential in English. With that in my mind I still was trying my best to work at getting better, despite how much it made me cringe at the thought of it. My perspective of writing began to change as time went on, the assignments were based on interesting topics which made it a bit bearable for me. I’ve learned that you have to make the steps to get to the perfect paper. A paper requires you to brainstorm, make an outline, and writing your rough draft to get that feedback you need before finishing up that final draft. During this class I have also learned where to put my thesis and that I don’t need to have that three point subtopics of what you should talk about. The writing length started getting longer and I was a bit skeptical on how I can get to the word count or what will I talk about within my papers, but I have
