Social media can become an addiction and it can affect community and people differently. For example, I personally use social media as well and it affects me in many different ways. Over the past year, social media has grown to be a miracle in today world. Social media is something that most kids, teens, and adults use every day. Having people on the phone all the time is the disappointment and instead of talking face to face, they choose to text or using social media. Social media shows a huge role in today modern society. Social media influence us in many negative different ways and it is the major problem in my family and community. If people know how to use social media wisely they will make a better society. I personally use social media every day and it distracts me in many different ways but I would like to point out three thing that affects me, which are my health condition, education, and relationship with God. My doctor said, “sleep makes your memories stronger.” I trust what he said to me because when I sleep more I feel fresher than I sleep less. When I feel fresh I finished my homework done easily. In 2014, I did a presentation in our church about how social media effect on our health situation. I had spent too much time on research about it and it gave me so many reasonable statements. One thing that I found was, it leads us to increase neck pain because when we watch the phone while we sleep it hurt our neck and we keep doing it every day so it will outcome in a negative way in one day. “40% more likely to have tried cigarettes, two times more likely to have tried alcohol, 43% more likely to be binge drinkers, and 41%more likely to have used illicit drugs compared to their non-hyper-texting peers. In addition, these students are 55% more likely to have been in a physical fight.” (page-8) People should concern about their health, if they want to live longer they should stop doing drug and a physical fight. Social media associated with risky behavior because people are bullying through social media so it makes them angry easily. Many students are spending more time on Social Media and wasting their valuable time. When I am on social media I did not feel like doing my homework and it makes me
Next time you are out in public, notice how many people are immersed in their cellular devices. I bet you will see a lot, and most likely these people are on their social media accounts. According to Brooke Lusk, the database and media manager for the Prevention Researcher, social media can be defined as, “an aspect of the internet which allows individuals and groups to create and publish online content, share the content, and interact about it.” These days, people are very involved with the internet and social media. Some think this is a benefit while others think this is a detriment for many reasons. Social media allows people to stay connected and explore new things, but there are many negative aspects that can affect self esteem, cause
It has become extremely common for an individual to sign into their Facebook account, and see a picture that they feel exposed a little too much. Check into their Instagram account, and regret letting everyone know what their location was. Feel uncomfortable, or bullied by a tweet that a person posted to their Twitter. Per Farheen’s article on negative effects of social media “participating in social media sites such as these can make you feel more connected” (Sagheer 1). It is not okay for individuals to feel victimized due to the negative effects of social media. Social media tends to distract, humiliate, and destroy one-self through entertainment. If people would donate more time to things more supplemental to their growth, and limit their use of social media, then maybe people would stop walking over the harm that social media presents to our community. Monitoring the time invested into social media will help eliminate most of the detriment, privacy issues, and bullying flowing through today’s society.
Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are commonly used among the younger generations, but can the excessive use of these apps cause mayhem? According to a new study conducted by the Family Technology Education Non-Profit Group, teenagers are spending nearly 9 hours a day on social media. The excessive use of social media is a bad influence on adolescents because of the negative impacts it has. Social media can cause direct impacts to the mental health, safety, and lives of its users. Teenagers need to ensure that they are being cautious and responsible while using different social media networks.
In today’s society, social media is an important tool that many people use daily for
Social media today is growing at very fast rates. The number of people joining social platforms to see what others are doing are astronomical, but with this this rise in social media usage, users are becoming more isolated. Social media distracts individuals from face-to-face interactions with friends, and makes having connections with new people harder to do. So much time out of someone's day is spent in social media. It is also causing more self-consciousness among its users. Social media today is becoming a bigger thing, but with all this, users are becoming isolated and distracted from real life, it makes users not connect with each other in real life, and with so much time spent in social media, people become shier and socially awkward.
Social networking is a primary source for influencing negative behaviors, especially egotism and relationship troubles. Social media gives people an opportunity for users to share content with their friends and followers. However, some people who post photos or videos of themselves online for international viewing become more narcissistic, and will constantly refer to themselves as being of a more higher standard than others. According to one online source, the author states some online communities have the potential for altering with a user’s mentality, and can render the mind to act more egotistical and reduce their focus on other situations (Derbyshire, 2011). The claim presented by Derbyshire demonstrates that a few social networking sites can do just about as much damage to a person’s behavior than being isolated from it. The amount of content posted online by an egotistical user raises the bar for them to only care about themselves rather than the wellbeing of others. A user’s attention span (as mentioned in the data) decreases drastically due to their constant attachment to a mobile device daily as again, the attention is only focused on them. It is mainly how this young brain develops; it becomes inconsistent the more time spent on these mobile platforms for potential virtual stardom. Besides the narcissism, social media can also be the result of modern-day relationship issues. In a 2017 study done by Deseret News and Brigham Young University, the research shows
With the advent of the internet, social media platforms have become a form of mass communication. The large database of information and mobilization has led to the increased integration of social media in daily life. Along with the transition towards new societal institutions, controversy and exposure of the negative effects surrounds the stigma of social media. With the increase of street protests in the United States, people believe that social media may be the cause for the unrest and the continually perceived unsuccessful movements. Although social media creates a different dynamic in the diffusion of current social and political demonstrations, the evidence shows that social media increases participation, efficiency, and success for protests and social movements. Being an integral part of current and future demonstrations, social media’s benefits and consequences should be studied more.
One thing I noticed is that students around the school are using their phone more frequently, mainly used to go on social media. According to a study published in the academic journal “Computers in Human Behavior”, participants who spent a large amount of time online displayed more symptoms of clinical depression(Onefile). This shows that social media usage is linked to people’s mental health. Social media acts like a highly addictive drug, it creates a temporary sense of enjoyment of enjoyment and happiness to teens. It is the sense that people are getting that makes teen use social media more repetitively. After having the same feeling over and over again, the effectiveness of social media will decrease. Until
Having social media in our upcoming generation has become one of the most popular sources of communication. Young teenagers growing up in today’s generation with social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter have provided pictures and videos that have become the first thing people look at in the morning, and the last thing they see before bed. These pictures have provided unrealistic standards as to what is considered beautiful in today’s society. By establishing unattainable standards of beauty and bodily perfection, the media drive ordinary people to dissatisfaction with their body images. The dissatisfaction can results in resorts to drastic measures, and even disorders of behavior, as people try to achieve these unreachable goals.
Online networking platforms are causing a growth issue in social and relationship growth. An issue that not only affects southerners, but the entire modern world. This is becoming more evident in younger generations who have never known life without it. It has become necessary to limit and control our usage of these online networking resources. There are a few statements that can be proven that lead to this necessity: social media can create unnecessary problems in people’s lives, there are people who resort to social media for things that they shouldn’t, there are people who use online dating for the wrong reasons and hurt others because of it, online dating and social media has become a go to thing for people, and there are online networking platforms that undermine face to face interactions. There are still good things that can come out of online networking platforms, but it is high time people recognized the importance of limiting and controlling their usage of these online networking resources.
In this day and age, media plays a gigantic role in the lives of everyone in society. Along with television, video games, movies, and the internet, social media plays a role in kids’ lives as well. As of 2017, 81 percent of people in the U.S. use or have a social media account, according to Statista, the Statistics Portal. However, this may not seem as great as one may think. Media has a large negative effect on the behavior, actions, and mindset of todays’ youth, portraying both male and females in a negative matter.
The use of social media by athletes is observed more and more every year; both collegiate and professional athletes have large platforms, and many athletes choose to use social media accounts to communicate messages to bring awareness to a certain organization, show support for other athletes and teams, or to persuade fans to buy a particular product. Uniquely enough, athletes can send nonverbal messages on social media with the use of Instagram; and in addition to positive impacts of social media platforms, there can be negative consequences for athletes.
Social media seem to play an imperative part of people’s lives around the world. Sitting behind a computer communicating with cyber friends can be easy and fun but can weaken a person’s verbal communication skills. The article “Why people use Social media, a uses gratifications approach” by Anita Whiting and David Williams explores how social media strengthens and weakens communication. They not only focus on the negative impacts on communication, because there are some positive impacts communication through on social media. A second article by Melinda Smith and Jeanne Segal, “Dealing with Loneliness and Shyness” states that other people are evaluating and judging people in social situations. As humans we are meant to be social creatures. Having friends makes us happier; in fact, being socially connected is key to our mental and emotional health. Many of us are shy and socially introverted. Some feel awkward around strangers, unsure of want to say, or worried about what others might think of us. This can cause people to avoid social situations, cutting themselves off from others, and gradually becoming isolated and lonely.
Social media is often portrayed as a social handicap to the younger generations due to the lack of communication the face-to-face contact. Despite this belief, social media has created an alternative communication method which is rapidly depleting the physical contact in society. Teenagers are becoming more dependent on their ability to hide behind a computer screen and “socialize” rather than sharing physical contact with their peers. Although social media has created a social handicap in physical contact, it has also created the ability to communicate with people across the world and promote positivity on notable issues. Media has even become a pivotal role in political campaigns in recent years. Social media has become a crucial role in society’s interactions.
Our lives seem to be more and more consumed by technology as great advances in this area have continue to be made, especially when it comes to social media. Many researchers have begun to notice that depending on how much time individuals spend on these social media sites, they can negatively affect their daily lifestyle in very significant ways. For example, social networking has become a huge distraction for students and it can affect their grades depending on how often they check their various accounts while doing class work. Researchers have also come to find out that social media can contribute to the development of psychological symptoms
