In the late 17th century the New England and Chesapeake developed to two distinct societies with different economic and social societies, despite both regions being settled mostly by the English. The reason for settlement in each region was different which alludes to how the regions became so different. Each region demonstrates their difference, by the way the members of their society are treated, reasons for going to the americas, and use of religion in politics. The New English people were treated much differently than he people of the Chesapeake region. In New England, everyone watches over each other in a communal way. John Winthrop wrote in A Model of Christian Charity, “We must delight in delight in each other, make others’ condition our own…” (Doc A) The New England colonies, as shown in Document A, was focused on one another. There was little privacy, but everyone looked after one another. The Chesapeake region was more focused on every man for himself and on status. In Document D, the …show more content…
The New England region was mostly Puritan which they made the essential part of daily life by being a perfect society or “a city upon a hill.” (Document A) The Chesapeake was religious, but mostly known for being Anglican as the settlers were examined for their conformity to the church according to document C. The church was an important factor to the settlers, but they did not include it in their politics like the puritans did. In New England, one could not vote unless they were a member of the church. This strongly differs from the mercantilistic and aristocratic ran government of the Chesapeake when you just had to be a free, property owning man in order to vote. The chesapeake region was considered a more free area, but if you did not do well within the society, no one would help you unlike the the New England region which didn’t allow privacy or social standing because it was sinful to not help one's
The difference in development between New England and the Chesapeake Bay region was a matter of several issues ranging from freedom of religion, economy, the system of governing and most importantly, unity. What made these two societies differ was the effort
While both the people of the New England region and of the Chesapeake region descended from the same English origin, by 1700 both regions had traveled in two diverse directions. Since both of these groups were beset with issues that were unique to their regions and due to their exposure to different circumstances, each was forced to rethink and reconstruct their societies. As a result, the differences in the motivation, geography, and government in the New England and Chesapeake regions caused great divergence in the development of each.
The immigrants that settled the colonies of Chesapeake Bay and New England came to the New World for two different reasons. These differences were noticeable in social structure, economic outlook, and religious background. As the colonies were organized the differences were becoming more and more obvious and affected the way the communities prospered. These differences are evident from both written documents from the colonists and the historical knowledge of this particular period in time.

Question: Although New England and the Chesapeake region were both settled largely by people of English origin, by 1700 the regions had evolved into two distinct societies. Why did this difference in development occur?
Both the Chesapeake colonies and the New England colonies had different social structure and development. Because the colony was founded for gold the Chesapeake colony was primarily men that could work. (Doc C.)The colonists of the Chesapeake even had to sign oaths of allegiances to the Church of England. (Doc C.) The colony was under the rule of England and was to help support England finically. When they arrived they even sign their own contracts such as the Articles of Agreement, Springfield, Massachusetts, 1636. (Doc D.) This caused England to have a foothold in their colonies, and then under them were Clergy, free white men, the few women, servants, and slaves. The Chesapeake colonies had servants and slaves, servants could work their way of servant hood, for example they might work seven years and then become free. The Chesapeake colony also had slaves because its economy was based on cash crop plantations, most of these slaves came from Africa and was the beginning of the Slave Trade. These types of people were primarily dominant in this colony because it was founded as a working colony and had no need for families, just men that could work. This was very
New England and the Chesapeake region were both settled largely by people of English origin, but by the 1700’s they were two distinct societies. They differed politically, economically, and socially, and these differences stemmed from when people first arrived in the colonies to how the colonies grew over time.
Although the Chesapeake and New England colonies were the earliest English colonies to flourish in the New World, they were both extremely different in the ways that they developed. Similarities between the colonies can be found, but the colonies were mostly different. The colonies differed most in religion, society, culture, economy, and their relationships with the American Indians of the region. The reasons for such differences can be understood by realizing that the colonies were settled by incredibly different people who possessed different cultures, religious beliefs, and motivations for settling in their respective colonies in the first place. The Chesapeake and New England colonies had similarities and differences in their development, including how each colony affected nearby American Indians. Their differences and similarities can be understood by analyzing each colony’s geography, economy, religions, and cultures.
Although New England and the Chesapeake region were both settled largely by the people of English origin, by 1700 the regions had evolved into two distinct societies. The reasons for this distinct development were mostly based on the type on people from England who chose to settle in the two areas, and on the manner in which the areas were settled.
Thesis Statement: When talking about New England and the Chesapeake region, you have to consider the differences in motives and geography. Consider economic situations (reasons for settling where they did, reasons why they came to New England in the first place). One has to think about the family development and demographics, as well as the government structure.
New England was founded for religious reasons which was dominated by the congregational Church like Rhode Island, whereas in Chesapeake, the Church of England was established with no Puritans, the rural environment makes schools and Churches more difficult. The patterns of settlement for Chesapeake is that they have a fertile land and large tobacco plantations while New England has infertile land and rocky land. Their motive for settlement was that Chesapeake wants to get rich quick and prosper from tobacco while New England migrated in family units, Congregationalists wanted a land to themselves, they migrated for religious freedom. The settlers in Chesapeake were indentured servants, farmers, and 2nd sons of gentries while the settlers in
In the past historians have written that the regions of Chesapeake and New England are extremely different, but still have something in common. Accordingly, they are found in their times of origination, they were both founded around the same time and also by the same people. Ultimately, they have both accepted Protestantism and the colonies both speak English. One major similarity is that they haven't forgotten who and where they came from, England, they still pledge allegiance to one crown. Like any other colony, they have created a society where both have been slow to establish social status. Unlike New England in Chesapeake a governing power tried to create a feudal system but the colonies shit it down quite fast. Notably they both have put themselves into a social group and no outside force trying to sway the people's social ranking placement.
It is quite simple, New England colonies were more religious than the Chesapeake. When the Roman Catholics separated from Henry VIII, it had created the Puritans. Furthermore, because King James I was against this new act, they sailed to the New World. Which eventually led to the Catholics, Quakers and also the Protestants to follow. Even though they lived more freely, they still followed the laws of England. Therefore, it is safe to say that New England was more prosperous because of the hard work, businessmen and labors. Whereas, Chesapeake Bay was able to economically gain because of their agriculture growth and the exploding development of tobacco. Which was stated in U.S. A Narrative History Volume 1 by James Davidson, Brian DeLay, Christine Leigh Heyrman, Mark H. Lytle and Michael B. Stoff (Page
Those who settled in the Chesapeake region were fortunate to have been near a peninsula along the James River. They were expecting to find numerous valuables things such as gold, silver, to make profit, and paths to other New Worlds, cures for illness, and other miscellaneous valuables they could profit from. In the Chesapeake region they were governed by London, they had an economy that largely benefited from monocrop plantations. The people who settled in the Chesapeake area consisted of “adventurers, sojourners, and single men”. The political elites were wealthy planters, and culturally were ethnically heterogeneous, and less religious.
While the people of the New England area and of the Chesapeake area came from English origin, by 1700 both areas had moved in two different directions. Both of these groups were “blessed” with issues that were unique to their regions, and each was forced to reconstruct their societies. As a result, the differences in the motivation, geography, and government in the New England and Chesapeake regions caused great difference in the development of each.
