Goal
The objectives of this lab were to install essential services such as Active Directory, Dynamic Host Configuration Service, Domain Name Service and Network Time Service on a Windows Server Platform. I used windows server 2016 technical review version 3 and successfully installed all the mentioned services on it. In this lab we used all services on windows as primary and I configured the services on Linux as secondary services.
Security Consideration
One of the important part of system administration should be secure, so it is very important to understand which factors can affect security inside and outside our system. There are many key decisions that have to be made, for example, what server operating system should a system use to which

Linux Security
It is really hard to have an unbiased opinion about each server as the person working with one will normally argue that it is more secure but we should not mistake trust with security as these two are not equal.
Back in 1983 Department of Defense published series of book about security which had color code! The red book was related to network security and the security of system was discussed in the orange book. Base on the orange book an operating system based on its secure design and implementation can be in one of these categories: D, C1, C2, B1, B2, B3, and A1 which is from no security up to Verified protection. Base of Orange book and another evaluation system called Common Criteria both Linux and Windows has similar security. And most security based on how one server implements and being used on each platform.
Microsoft and Linux both provide support for authentication, access control, audit logging, Controlled Access Protection Profile, and cryptography. But , I think Linux is superior due to Linux Security Modules (LSM), SELinux. The user of a Linux system can decide to add additional security mechanisms to a Linux distribution without having to patch the

We need to have a secure services and network and also it must be available sometime up to 24/7/365. To make sure that we are close to our Service level agreement (SLA) with our clients, we must check our performance to find the bottleneck. After identifying our bottlenecks we can plan and see what changes can improve our performance.
To measure the performance I used Opsview monitoring solution to monitor both DNS and DHCP on Linux and Windows server. Some sample tools like ping, nslookup and traceroute can be used in Windows and Linux to measure the basic metrics for DNS and DHCP. TO have a real data we need to test inside a real network or with some means generate the amount of traffic near the real traffic to find our network and services' bottlenecks.
For DNS we need also to test how long it takes authoritative DNS servers to respond to a request for your domain or host, including the Domain, the TLD, and the Root DNS server response times. This test provides us with information to help identify possible DNS hosting performance delays resolving our domain. It can be useful when evaluating the DNS performance of hosting providers, and general troubleshooting performance of a
In developing Windows Server 2008, three key aspects of security were imperative in achieving goal to create our most secure operating system to date .These new security features provide unprecedented levels of protection for a company's network, data, and business, making Windows Server 2008 the most secure Windows Server ever..
The first OS we are going to look at is Linux, it can be a hard system to use and understand, if you have not used it before, you must have a good knowledge of computers in order to deal with Linux. Commands have to be typed in on the command line, and most people do not know or understand command line text. Linux does not have a great number of vendor selling their computer or software, so there is not a good support system for it.
We have a choice of using either Windows or Linux for operating system, since they are already preloaded on the servers we are purchasing. In making our decision, we had to first take a look at the features that each system provided and which one would be the best for what we are doing.

Diving a bit deeper into what is different and/or which is more acceptable to threats and vulnerabilities Mac OS vs. Linux vs. Windows has always been an ongoing, never ending debate. The debate usually starts off by stating since Windows has the largest market of OSes, which means it should be the more likely attacked. Also previous unsupported versions are left vulnerable as there is no longer support for patches or bugs fixes. While Windows has its issues Mac OS X during 2010 out ranked Windows for having the most vulnerabilities. Of the three Linux is my personal choice do to the amount of permissions that would have to be escaladed to gain access to the root is a bit more difficult, as well as smaller corporate presents
The next step would be to measure response times. Using the most frequently reported problem, a single support request would be placed to measure the length of time from request to response, followed by the response to resolution time. This data will be used as baseline for measuring deviations from ideal times.
Expanding upon Linux, I have a strong desire to learn it. While at my internship at Harris, one of the people with whom I worked closely with was a master of Linux. It is a very intriguing operating system that is highly flexible. It has the highest security as its code is unique because it is open source, which allows for it to be programmed into any system. I have seen Linux based software used to hack into a computer, duplicate hard drives, and emulate systems.
One of the biggest disadvantages is that it does not have a specific organization which updates and provides services, or software tweaks in a regular manner as Windows does. Another disadvantage is that the lack of graphical user inters faces, or the absence of free tools and software when compared to Windows (Host wisely, 2011).
Comparison between windows and Linux is mostly used discussion topic among peoples. Windows and Linux both are operating system in which Windows are closed source and used for PC.While Linux is open source and used for open source community. Both operating systems have unique features, advantages and disadvantages. Both operating systems are differing from each other in term of working, cost, security etc. The first focus of this paper is on introduction of both OS .This paper mainly focuses on difference between both OS and also defines how these OS are different in term of working, cost, security, configuration, and performance and user friendliness.
Not only that, but users can even fix problems themselves. Microsoft may tout its large team of paid developers, but it 's unlikely that team can compare with a global base of Linux user-developers around the globe. Security can only benefit through all those extra ‘eyeballs’" (Why Linux is More Secure Than Windows, para. 13).
The two primes of the market on an OS are Windows and Apple. Consider Linox for a change as it does not have as many exploits as Windows or Apple, says Strohmeyer (2008). There is a low number of malware out there that was created for Linux. Think of it this way, the more popular the OS is, the more viruses, malware, etc, are out there for it. “Obscurity is one of the biggest impediments to malware on Linux” (Strohmeyer, 2008). Do not take this for granted and assume that Linux is bulletproof. Remember, the OS can only help so much; it is up to the user to be secure themselves through their actions and ideas. For example, the user should not download or click on anything that looks suspicious. There are people out there that do not know what that means; for those users, stay clear away from a computer. The computer can only be as secure as the user is. So, please, save your IT department a
Founded in 1975, Microsoft (Nasdaq "MSFT") is the worldwide leader in software for personal computers. The company offers a wide range of products and services for business and personal use; each designed with the mission of making it easier and more enjoyable for people to take advantage of the full power of personal computing every day. The Linux operating system is not suitable for mainstream usage by business or home users. Today with Windows NT 4.0, customers can be confident in delivering applications that are scalable, secure, and reliableyet cost effective to deploy and manage. Linux clearly has a long way to go to be competitive with Windows NT 4.0. With the release of the Windows
The aim of this research is to assess security risks with legacy systems. Research has uncovered that in spite of the information technology (IT) industry's diligence to advance the model of operating systems (O/S) employed, a
An operating system accomplishes the following tasks: interaction between computer and user, providing an environment of which programs operate, and manages files. Yet, each operating system does it its own way. Hence, it is advantageous to know the pros and cons of each operating system before a decision is made. Any kind of operating system can be utilized in most environments; it's just a matter of difficulty supporting it regarding maintenance, compatibility problems and other concerns. For example, the Mac OS X would be perfect for the graphic design department, but would not work out well in the engineering department, which is better suited for Windows or Linux.
Linux is an open-source development and free software whose source code can be freely used, redistributed and modified by third party OS developers. The range of Windows Operating Systems are created by Microsoft Corporation. Unlike Linux, Windows consists of proprietary closed sources [5]. FreeBSD is an advanced version of OS and runs on modern desktops, servers and
