From a very early age I have had a passion and drive to help people. I was first inspired to go in to a nursing career by my grandmother who would tell me stories about her experiences as a midwife. One that stood out to me was when she travelled through a snowstorm to deliver a baby, and it is this level of commitment, care and compassion that I aspire to have. I have also found inspiration from my mum who is an ICU nurse and has always shared her experience and advice with me. This has been something that has resonated with me throughout my life and has always served as an inspiration.
I have always enjoyed working with children, which is shown through my current job as a swimming teacher and my volunteer work. My chosen pathway is

After observing during work placements in hospital settings how to deal with challenging behaviour I feel I already have the foundations of the skills needed to work with distressed family members.
I worked as a Poolside Assistant for Water Lilies Swimming School for over a year and have recently completed my STA Level 2 Award in Swimming Teaching, alongside the STA Level 2 Safety Award for Teachers and Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults Certificate. I currently teach classes of up to 4 children from age 3-13; through this I have developed my confidence working with children, have increased my organisational skills through lesson planning and learnt valuable skills in communication with different children. I feel that the skills I have gained in helping a nervous child to feel at ease in the water will be very transferable to the skills needed to help a child feel comfortable in hospital.

Since I was young I knew I wanted to be in the medical field. I liked the idea of helping people, especially kids. I went from wanting to be doctor, to a pediatrician, to a neonatal nurse, and I finally settled on a nurse. I knew nurses face many challenges that I am preparing myself to overcome. Working long hours being one of them.
Historically, the nursing field is one that has consistent positive job outlooks, as there is typically a continued shortage. Healthcare is the backbone of most communities, not just for its services, but also for the jobs it provides and the economy stimulation. Jill Bernstein, author for “Changes in Health Care Financing and Organization” states, “The health care industry is a critical component of the national, and most regional and local economies of the United States” (4). The nursing field has suffered challenges due to the economic, social, and the political downturn of the U.S. Nevertheless, there is still some noticeable growth taking place and opportunities available. This shows encouraging signs for new nursing graduates.

During my term in school I have often thought about what department of nursing I would like to go into, but I did not put too much thought into the steps it would take to become a nurse in Illinois. I have been so focused on being a mom of four, going through nursing school and keeping my job (not in medical) of eleven years that I haven’t had a real mental opportunity to consider how I will retain a holistic life balance, which stressors or challenges I may face, how I will continue to learn throughout my life as a nurse, nor what type of contributions I can make as a professional nurse. Through researching these questions, I have learned a lot about, the process and myself.

Since I was a young child, I have wanted to pursue nursing as a career. Nursing is a blend of abstract and concrete thinking, giving the ability to assist individuals sick or well, in activities to health or recovery, from birth to death. Many factors came into consideration for choosing nursing as a career. However, a few main factors included the ability to help others, the ability to travel as a career and nursing runs in the family. The ability to help others is something that I am passionate about. When I have been in hospital myself, the care and support I was given by the nurses was excellent, and I would endeavour future patients to receive the same or better treatment and nurturing care that I received. Knowing that Australia is a leading quality healthcare provider, but I am keen to
My mother inspired me to be a nurse, not because she is a nurse or because she told me to pursue this career, but because of her love and compassion for people. I aim to follow in her footsteps but on a much greater scale. A few years ago I initiated a goal to pursue a nursing degree in order to gain some experience then travel around the world to assist people in need of medical care, specifically in undeveloped countries. These people do not have the means to receive medical attention because of where they live, I want to help them for that reason.
