Before the 1900s, in order to get from the Atlantic ocean to the pacific ocean, you had to go around South America then all the way up again to reach your destination. Everyone was getting tired of going the long way, until a French company that was lead by Ferdinand de Lesseps came up with the idea of making a canal through Panama. However, the French ended failing because of the obstacles that came their way. Later on the U.S. wanted to continue building the canal, plus they had more to gain from this canal. They got the permission to build a canal through Panama and began working. Of course many obstacles were faced, but finally on August 15, 1914, the canal was completed. You are probably thinking that what is so significant about a canal anyway. The canal not only made trips between the Atlantic and the Pacific Ocean easier, but it also made trading a whole lot more quicker now. In order to get between the two oceans you had to go around South America and then back up again, but that always took a long time to do. With the Panama Canal this made trading and getting to the Pacific Ocean a whole lot more simpler and quicker. According to the video, it states that the U.S. had a lot more to gain than anybody else and would rise as a global power, both trading and military wise. Meaning it would also change American history by making the U.S. rise in global power.
Also, the Panama Canal was very different compared to other events or inventions that happened in history. While in the making of the Panama Canal, it was the first time that the President had left the country. President Roosevelt was the first to leave the United States, while in office to go to Panama and to see how the canal was going. Then, it was also the first time that a lock canal was ever attempted to be made. To be able to pass the mountains of culebra they had to build a lock canal.
