Personal Essay: Ann Parrish

Hardship is seen in some degree in everyone’s lives. It pushes us to the maximum, makes us hit rock bottom. These experiences change us, though not in the same way. Some souls rise to the occasion and rise out of the ashes, while others become stuck in the endless downward spiral. Although some individuals are crushed by the adversity, other are about to overcome it and become better people and lead improved lives.

This article is an inspiring piece that teaches you, anything in life takes struggle. This article talks about the changes of a person’s mindset. “She has found that most people adhere to one of two mindsets: fixed or growth” (Paragraph 4). Fixed mindsets tend to believe that whether you’re intelligent or not is based on your genes. While growth mindsets believe that you expand your knowledge by challenges and learning from your mistakes. In my judgement, the author’s purpose was to inspire people to accept struggle, because that is what makes your knowledge expand and grow. It can occur in any form, slightly stressful or devastating painful. It can happen to anyone, rich, poor, big or small. Adversity is inevitable. Most people would consider it very negative with no benefits, but they are not aware of its hidden effect. Roman poet Horace suggests that adversity can cause a person to demonstrate certain talents, which would not have been present if not for their misfortune. People and characters in any literary work experience unfortunate events and put through difficult situations that they need to overcome. Adversity uncovers their concealed gifts that help them through their hardships. Under its effect, it also can alter the process in developing a character and transform them into someone completely different.

Ease does not challenge people and adversity is needed to help people discover who they are. In other words, misfortunes, obstacles and difficulties are needed to aid us in finding ourselves and who we are.

Adversity has a way of bringing up challenges unexpectedly, most people shrink away from it and get consumed, but when they push through it people come out stronger than they were before.

Overall, adversity is not always something to be avoided. Once someone is affected by adversity in their life, they must keep going and work through it opposed to allowing it to block them permanently. Hardships have the power to make a break a person, as Roman poet, Horace, once said, “Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant”. Everyone has or will have to face adversity at some point in their lives, it is a universal truth. Although misfortunes usually have a negative connotation, depending on the struggle and how one deals with it, it is likely the person will come out of misfortune better prepared for the world. Contrastly, if a person never experienced any hardships, they would lack a sophisticated understanding of the world and lack the ability to handle difficult situations. Adversity gives people strength they can not obtain with success.

First,in ways, people overcome obstacles is keeping a positive attitude since when you have a positive attitude you are harder to discourage.An example of positive attitude while facing adversity would be in the text “A work in progress” where Aimee Mullin faces her adversity with humor like when she broke her wooden leg and while all the other people in that room were freaking out all she could think about was that her parents were going to kill her.I chose this example because out of all the stories we read in class about facing adversity Aimee Mullin struck me as the most positive about her obstacle.It’s important because it shows my point that with a positive attitude you don’t get discouraged as easily and like Aimee Mullin you can achieve whatever you wish no matter your adversity.Another example from “A work in progress” that shows positive attitude would be when Aimee Mullin got her new legs and was stating all the good qualities about her legs instead of being like oh I don’t this about them or

Of course, adversity is ultimately inevitable in life. When a problem arises, individuals are generally astonished at the response to the complexity of the situation. This makes adversity becomes a wall that is unable to be broken down. However, there is a point in an individual where their instincts can reveal the truth, “it’s part of life to have obstacles, it’s about overcoming obstacles, that’s the key to happiness.” Qualities and characteristics of individuals are revealed during the hard times. These talents that are within us, that are usually locked up to give the ability for an individual to unlock the adversity that it created. In this sense, an individual true color and nature can be revealed leading to a new understanding of the capability to overcome adversities.

Everyone has to experience adversity one time or another during their life, but it is how you respond to the adversity who makes you who you are. Two prime examples of people who overcame adversity is Victor Cruz and Iliana Roman. In Bill Pennington’s essay, “Defying the Odds: Victor Cruz” and Iliana Roman”s essay, “First Job” they tell us about the different adversities that they endured during their life and how it shaped into the person that they are today. Although Pennington and Roman’s essay are about the lives of two different people they convey a similar message of overcoming adversity through experience, pathos, and connotative diction.

In the article “Navigating Turbulent Waters” by Jimmy Liao the author talks about his belief that life’s obstacles do not need to be a hindrance. The author believes that changing the perspective of perceived difficulties can have a positive effect on the outcome. The author states “It’s the way I choose to define the events in my life – by my response to them” (Liao). The way a person looks at a difficult situation can help them persevere through it. The author goes on to talk about his belief that by not fighting the challenges in life the challenges can lead to success.

Adversity and difficulties are an inherent part of life that everyone has to handle, but is it possible they actually help people reach their highest potential? Difficulties bring out the skills and strengths that otherwise would have never been accessed. Horace could not have been wiser when he said “Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant,” and he could not have been wiser. There are many people who had an easy life or were born into their success who are remembered for greatness, but the stories of people who had to overcome challenges are always that ones that stay with us much more. “Talladega College, I have you by the reigns!” says Pauline Hunter. Although she is a first year student at Talladega College, Pauline is confident that she has the school figured out, for the most part. A beat up Chevrolet with blasting rap music slows down and Donovan exchanges good natured insults with the four or five boys inside. Teasingly, she makes and obscene gesture and the car takes off up the street, leaving the air thick with the distinct smell of muffler smoke and the fading strains of DMX. As they disappear out of sight, she shakes her head and chuckles slightly, obviously struck by some funny thought that she 's not about to share. Watching this nonchalant blonde, no one would ever guess she carries the stigma of a childhood marked my tragedy and trauma.
