Health is the most precious asset in the possession of human beings. From my classroom experience and through interaction with literature texts, I have come to the conclusion that people can be responsible for their health. As a student of public health, it is important to maintain good personal health in order to address the public health problems in the future. To be responsible for my personal health, I have taken the initiative to implement a personal health behavior changing plan to test whether a positive reinforcement of rewarding myself to watch one episode of my favorite TV show each night is an effective method to change my eating habit in a short period of time.
According to my health report generated by Blue Zones, I have a very unhealthy eating habit. I do not consume enough fruits and vegetables. One of the suggestions they give to me is to enjoy some fruit and vegetables every day, by which I could add 377 days to my life expectancy. As a result, I set my short term goal to be meeting the recommendation of daily fruit and vegetable intake (2.5 cups of fruits and 3.5 cups of vegetables) made by Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention base on my age (22), sex (male) and level of physical activity (30 – 60 minutes per day). In the long run, I hope to maintain a healthy eating habit without any intervention. According to CDC, One cup refers to a common measuring cup (the kind used in recipes). In order to develop a wellness program there are several things that should be taken into consideration. First, you must develop your own personal perception of what you feel wellness is and how to stay well. Secondly, you must know what the pros and cons are for being fit. Then finally you must set immediate goals to obtain your level of wellness. The main thing you need to keep in mind is that developing a healthy life style early in life is a key factor in preventing diseases and improving one quality of life.
I had no idea that what I included in my diet was so important and provided a significant impact to my wellbeing. After doing the first part of this Analysis project, I was surprised to see the many areas that I can improve on. I created 3 specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-bound goals to help me improve on receiving the right amount and variety of nutrients in my diet. My goals are to drink 8 glasses of water a day, have fruits and vegetables every meal adding to a total of about 4-6 cups, and to have a different breakfast every day. For 30 days, I attempted to implement daily each of my 3 goals.

The majority of people will decide to change their health behavior throughout their lifetime. The reasons for the change might be quite different from individual to individual. Some may be motivated to take action after experiencing a life threatening illness, while others are proactive and change their health behavior to decrease the risks of developing a potential disease. However, even if the reasons for the change are valid and well understood, there is a great possibility that one will not follow set goals long term. Stacy Carter, an assistant of professor and an author of the Social Validity Manual, expresses her opinion about people implementing a scientifically proven health behavior change treatment in their routine, “if it's something that is going to cause them a lot of effort, or is difficult to implement, then they probably are not going to use it for long” (Cranford, 2011). Implementing these lifestyle habits will result in healthier people and lowered rates of chronic illness. One avenue to best prevent the development of chronic disease is to have health and wellness programs in the community, workplace, and schools (NCSL, 2012). If the population was properly educated on how to realistically live healthy lifestyles, then it would be easier to change and adopt healthier habits. This is especially true for adolescents in the school system. If nutrition and health classes were mandatory components of education across the nation, children would be able to learn healthy habits early on in life and more easily maintain those habits as they grow older. Results of these programs would be vastly beneficial due to a reduction in chronic disease prevalence. In addition to promoting healthy lifestyles and chronic disease prevention, discovering and implementing newly effective treatments are paramount to reduce chronic disease. This assignment and the first 4 units of this course will assist me in becoming a healthier person not only personally but also professionally. I have struggled with my diet the past few years, either consuming to much or to little, ultimately eating not very healthy. My goal is to eat from each food group the best I can and to eat the portion sizes that is needed for my body. I am going to try and change my eating habits to create more positive choices for myself. Taking care of myself inside will help in the workforce mentally and physically but also help with my knowledge about healthy eating, I’ll be able to share and teach by example.
For the very first time in my life, I had executed a series of behavior changes in order to lose fifteen pounds by this semester. I am pleased and more than grateful to see that my customized plan is successful, and took effect in different aspects of my well-being. “I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become”, I believe this quote by Carl Jung encapsulated why my health improvement plan would work – determination incorporated into a personalized plan. Hereinafter, I would like to discuss in details what and why had my behavior changes improved both my short-term and long-term health.
My health goal was to change my eating habits. I chose this goal because I have a bad habit of not eating as well as I should. Although I usually do not eat fast food, I eat a lot of carbs. I was raised in an Italian family so macaroni and pizza are my two worst enemies. I figured that if I used this project to get rid of my bad eating habits, I would have an easier time eating healthy after this class ends. Before starting the project I realized that there will be challenges, but this project was not meant to be simple. If behavior change was simple, then anyone would be able to change behavior whenever they wanted to.
From logging my food on myfitnesspal for five consecutive days, I have concluded heaps of information about not only my eating and lifestyle habits, but also the habits of our society. During the time period that I have logged my food for each meal, I have been very busy. Something that I concluded from this process though, is that the days that I was less busy I ate much healthier than the days that I was overly busy. I do think that it is extremely important to understand what exactly you are putting in your body and how this affects your body. By logging my food, I had the opportunity to really learn and understand these things. Collecting this data really affects health and medicine for many reasons. For instance, it seemed like the days that I ate a little bit healthier or exercised, not only was my health was better but I felt better. The days that I did not eat healthy whatsoever my attitude tended to be more negative. Since I recorded my food for five days, I have concluded that due to our fast paced society, fast, easy, and unhealthy food is what we turn to. When thinking about a public health issue that interests me I referred to healthy people 20/20. One that stuck out to me was “sleep health” and that is because it is something that effects everyone including me, my family and friends. Many people struggle to get the sleep they need and this effects their mental and physical health. Throughout my life there have been a few times where I had troubles getting and staying a sleep.
