Introduction What is physical security? The protection of personnel, hardware, programs, networks, and data from physical circumstances and events that could cause serious losses or damage to an enterprise, agency, or institutions is defined as physical security. This includes protection from fire, natural disasters, burglary, theft, vandalism, and terrorism. Physical security is designed to deny access to unauthorized personnel from physically accessing a building, facility, resource, or stored information; and guidance on how to design structures to resist potentially hostile acts. Physical security can be as simple as locked doors or as elaborate as multiple layers of barriers, armed security guards and guardhouse placement. Above all physical security primary concern consist of restricting physical access by unauthorized people and intruders within controlled facilities; although there are other considerations and circumstances in which physical security measures are valuable. For example, limiting access within a facility and/or to specific assets, and environmental controls to reduce physical incidents such as flood and fires. Physical security is not uniquely human and it is also not a modern phenomenon.
